douchebag

I’m surprised he isn’t on an island beach somewhere with the $100 million+ he scammed from his followers.

The man who said the world was going to end appeared at his front door in Alameda a day later, very much alive but not so well.

“It has been a really tough weekend,” said Harold Camping, the 89-year-old fundamentalist radio preacher who convinced hundreds of his followers that the rapture would occur on Saturday at 6 p.m.
[…]
“The issue is the Bible is mythology,” said Larry Hicok, state director of the American Atheists, bluntly laying out his case. Roughly 200 people attended the hastily scheduled conference to discuss the impact of organized religion on American culture.

“Every ruler needs a religion,” Hicok said. “Everybody knows that’s the way you get power.”

Well, shut my mouth. Here is the American Atheist reaction to we all still being here:

“Think for yourself, learn.” What kind of religion is THAT?

  2. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

#74 bobbo, I’m afraid that telling the Rapture Victims to learn from their mistakes is a little like yelling at deaf people. It might almost seem like valid therapy, but for whom? 😉

  3. LDA says:

Maybe he was right. Maybe the bible says that doomsday was when he said it was. It is fiction after all.

  4. bobbo, the evangelical anti-theist says:

Gary–my god, that is depressing. Heh, heh. That diminishing kernel of humanity I think is within us all? You say “no?”

Probably so. From the CageMatch I’ll post this link regarding how intelligent people believe in nonsense. Its a variation on the theme, still apropos.

When I was in high school I tried to determine scientifically if God existed. If a being is sufficiently powerful there is nothing that I can do to which it must respond. The creator or creators of this universe might not even care if life exists here. I certainly don’t see the universe as having been optimized for humans.

    There are still three options.

    There is a creator/creators.

    There is no creator/creators.

I can not falsify either of the above.

That leaves I don’t know as option three and the only response I consider to be scientific. On a personal level I have decided to live my life on the assumption that the universe is the product of a plan. You can do what you want.

it’s easy to laugh at these guys but I’m guessing that 90% of us have some strongly held beliefs that are already known to be false or will be determined to be false within this millennia.

  7. bobbo, the evangelical anti-theist says:

    #78–do-ill==and what is that plan?

  8. fred says:

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
    Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
    Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
    Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
    Then why call him God?”

“your posts are creeping longer. Remember, the shorter the better.”

    Physician, heal thyself !!!

  10. Benjamin says:

I am a Christian and I called it that the Rapture would not happen on Saturday. I still go to church even though Camping said not to. Camping made a lot of mistakes in his interpretation of the Bible because he doesn’t believe the Bible. He makes up interpretations as he goes along.

Most Christians did not believe Harold Camping. There were a few that were misled by this false prophet, but only a few. Most Christians made fun of this guy and we were right. No one knows what day the rapture will be.

Update, he now says it is coming October 21st.

He just doesn’t know when to stop.

So Alfie is proof of unintelligent design?

  13. fred says:

#84 “Quote cannot be sourced to Epicurus.”

Agreed, although it is often attributed to Epicurus. For the full story, see Wikipedia.

  14. bobbo, the evangelical anti-theist says:

#82–Fred==from each according to his ability, to each according to their need. An intelligent post can never be too long, Alfie’s never too short.

    See how that works?

Lets see…….how long should any post be regarding the eventuality of the Rupture?

Another proud thumper making fun of religion with no self awareness at all. Son of a Bitch!!!

    #68, Alphie

As it requires omniscience to state with absolute knowledge there is no god, and as only a god is omniscient, you contradict yourself.

Nope. Simply because there is no such thing as “absolute knowledge” in science or religion. There is only knowledge that is backed by evidence. There is no evidence that the universe was not created by nature.

AND you are philosophically without excuse. You don’t deny gravity, or “dark matter” or other entities exist, if their effects can be seen in creation.
Gravity and dark matter have a lot of evidence and some evidence, respectfully. They can be explained with scientific purpose.

Intelligent design of creation is everywhere, in everything God has made, yet you deny Him, and His effects exceed all others.
There is no evidence of any supreme being having guided the formation of the universe. While it is very true we do NOT know what happened before the Plank Event, we do understand what happened after. Nor is there any evidence that your “god” had any hand in the time before the Plank Event.

The only evidence a Christian or Jew can present for the existence of a “God” is a very old book. a book that also claims it is OK to sell your wife and children into slavery. It is fine to slay an entire city because they worship a different god. A priest may administer a potion to abort a fetus a man suspects of being from an affair. God approves of ripping a fetus from the belly of a woman for a few shekels. A book that allows the beating of a slave to any point short of death. A book where it is possible to live in the belly of a fish for several days. Yup. That book.

    Evidence, Alphie, evidence.

  16. t0llyb0ng says:

It was ol’ Carl Jung that observed that the deity possesses the faculty of omniscience, yet he consistently fails to consult it. Deity also lacks the capacity for self-reflection, apparently. Cannot comprehend his own “psychology.”

The problem of the flawed deity is endlessly entertaining for me.

The Christians & the “atheists” (ain’t no such thing) are both wrong. God exists because he’s installed at the factory. The problem is to locate Him & pry Him out of your own skull. Requires self-knowledge. Where ya gonna find THAT? (Hint: It’s a life’s journey.)

    GTFO, deity.

  17. bobbo, Republicans are all Lying Scum Suckers says:

tolly–Carl Jung was not as positive about the existence of god as you portray. In fact, it was all about the “unknowability” about god that “installed” this unconscious resevoir of fear and doubt in our psyche.

I never studied Jung because I thought he was full of shit. Maybe thats the same thing.

  18. So what says:

Bong, sorry to burst your bubble I am an atheist I don’t believe in any higher power or afterlife.

  19. Somebody says:

“All deities have an open invitation to stop by my house for coffee and a discussion.”

    Will there be pie?
