Kris Smith called it “the equivalent of a man Tupperware party.” In early December, he and a few pals gathered in a basement in suburban Chicago to try out their friend’s brand new Nintendo Wii video game console. At the end of the night, Smith, 32, was sweaty, exhausted, and completely sold on buying a Wii for himself.
After securing his own Wii, Smith, who heads new media initiatives at a start-up, organized a “Wii Tournament” that included an hour warm-up session and a trophy for the winner.
The invitation told guests: “If you have ever picked your nose or punched someone, you can get in on the fun.”
I presume this had something to do with hand-and-eye coordination.
Perrin Kaplan, vice president of marketing for Nintendo of America, said the Wii was also popular at family gatherings over the holidays — including her own.
“For the first time ever over the holidays all the people in my household were playing together,” Kaplan said. “I know it was a first for a lot of households.”
Like Arlo said, “They may thinks it’s a Movement!”

Nintendo gets it .The business is about selling fun games and not machines.Sony and M$ think its about hardware but Mario and his kin prove its about programing and audience participation.
By the way, Kris Smith has a hilarious podcast (which is where he told the Wii story). I’ve been listening for over two years.
Here’s the site:

My son, age 15, is already complaining his arm sore and he’s had his Wii exactly one week.
Not concerned he needed the exercise.
At that age I’m sure he plays with his Wii quite a bit.
Every morning before I take my kids to school, it has become custumary for us to bowl a couple of games on the Wii. The kids are not the only ones who are enjoying this console. Great fun!!!

Does the party includes matching room keys from a bowl? 😉
#8 – No, it’s not like your first date.
my family had a great time w/ my new wii over the holidays. everyone was getting in on it. family members who have never even showed an interest in video games were all over it. i could barely get a turn. but it was fun just to sit back and watch them enjoy it. i’ve had plenty of time to play since.
by the way, i got beat in bowling by my middle-aged aunt and my 7-year old niece in the same day. on what other system could that happen?? it’s great!
It is real?
