Hooray! As a resident of the Las Vegas area, this has been a big deal here for years. The problem wasn’t the dump itself, although many worried about the trains carrying the waste would be terrorist magnets despite tests that showed the casks were safe. It was that testing proved the location was dangerous. Reports of this were suppressed and fake reports written to advance the project by Bush & Co. Science perverted for political gain. Again.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada has achieved his long-held plan of doing away with the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

Following conversations with Energy Secretary Steven Chu and the White House, Senator Reid today announced that the administration and the Energy Department have agreed to cut off all funding to pursue a license application for the Yucca Mountain Project in the 2011 budget. It had been approved as the nation’s only permanent geologic repository for spent nuclear fuel and Department of Defense high-level radioactive waste.

“This is a major victory for Nevada,” Reid said. “I am pleased that President Obama has lived up to his promise to me and all Nevadans by working with me to kill the Yucca Mountain Project. I look forward to continuing my work with the President and his administration to find responsible, alternative solutions for dealing with nuclear waste.”

The proposed site for the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository is on federal land at the edge of the Nevada Nuclear Test site. The volcanic area has fractured, and critics expressed concerns that water moving through the fractures into the facility could corrode the containers holding the waste, releasing radioactivity into the environment.

It’s crap arrests like this that destroys respect for cops.

Pepin Tuma, 33, was walking with two friends along Washington’s hip U Street corridor around midnight Saturday, complaining about how Gates had been rousted from his home for not showing a proper amount of deference to a cop. “We’d been talking about it all day,” said Tuma. “It seems like police have a tendency to act overly aggressively when they’re being pushed around,” Tuma recalled saying.

Then the group noticed five or six police cruisers surrounding two cars in an apparent traffic stop on the other side of the street. It seemed to Tuma that was more cops than necessary.

“That’s why I hate the police,” Tuma said. He told the Huffington Post that in a loud sing-song voice, he then chanted, “I hate the police, I hate the police.”

One officer reacted strongly to Tuma’s song. “Hey! Hey! Who do you think you’re talking to?” Tuma recalled the officer shouting as he strode across an intersection to where Tuma was standing. “Who do you think you are to think you can talk to a police officer like that?” the police officer said, according to Luke Platzer, 30, one of Tuma’s companions.

Tuma said he responded, “It is not illegal to say I hate the police. It’s not illegal to express my opinion walking down the street.”

Within minutes, the officer had cuffed Tuma. The charge: disorderly conduct — just like Gates, who was arrested after police responded to a report of a possible break-in at his home and Gates protested their ensuing behavior.

“People talk about the Gates thing in terms of race, but it’s an ongoing problem of police using disorderly conduct to shut people up,” Tuma said.

The country (and by that I mean, of course, the news media) became transfixed last week when Angry Prof. Gates and The Cop became the new hit show of the summer TV season. Today, the stars of the show (Sgt. James Crowley and Henry Louis Gates Jr.) met with The President and Vice President of the Network, er, um… of America for a beer to talk about racism and stuff.

As usual, the paparazzi snuck in to snap photos like the one above. Obviously, they were candid and unplanned since the Prez & Veep have their sleeves rolled up. Just good, ole regular folk having some brews on the patio with buddies.

We here at DU, of course, are more concerned with the Real News in all this: What beer did they drink?

Obama was drinking Bud Light. Gates was drinking Samuel Adams and Officer Crowley had a Blue Moon. Here’s the scoop on the brews:

Bud Light: One of the best-selling beers in America, it’s Anheuser-Busch’s flagship light beer with 4.2% ABV and 110 calories per 12 ounce serving. It’s also the bestselling beer in America.

Blue Moon: The Belgian-Style wheat is brewed by the Molson Coors Brewing Company in Toronto, Ontario. The perfect summer brew is orange-amber in color with a cloudy appearance because it is unfiltered and boasts a pronounced orange flavor. It is 171 calories per 12-ounce serving and 5.4 percent ABV.

Samuel Adams Boston Lager: The original recipe was developed in 1860 in St. Louis, Missouri by Louis Koch, who sold under the name Louis Koch Lager until Prohibition, and again until the early 1950s. It contains 4.9% ABV.

Buckler: Owned by Heineken International, the low alcohol (0.5% ABV) pale lager is crisp and light. It was launched in the summer of 1988 and is distributed worldwide.

Turns out American beer makers didn’t like these choices.

BTW, although the President was fascinated by the fascination in this ‘event,’ why didn’t this obviously sexist pig summit include the woman who called 911 and started it all?

The US is pondering a crackdown on peer-to-peer file sharing programs after details of a Secret Service safe-house location for President Barack Obama and his family were found being traded on LimeWire.

A senior US lawmaker has said that it may be time for the Government to regulate companies that provide online file-sharing services after several people managed to access confidential information.
