California regulators suspend wireless customer protections

Here’s an article that’s one piece of background for my Marketwatch column on the SBC-AT&T merger (running today). Quite galling.

  1. Snap says:

From the people who brought you Enron California power crisis, it is just another day in the office.

Flashback: An Enron official declined comment, except to say that the company did not engage in improper activities in Texas or California. No way, who us cheat our customers? Trust us, you don’t need regulations for anything. Yea right!

  2. Ima Fish says:

A US government screwing over citizens to help big business, is this even news anymore?

  3. T.C. Moore says:

My favorite part is when they threaten to leave the state.
“If we suck so bad that people will cancel within 30 days, then we would rather leave millions of customers on the table rather than improve our service.”

I thought most offered the 30 day money-back guarantee anyway.

As for the rest of it: “10 point font”. Why don’t you just buy some glasses. How can a consumer not read the fine print and then blame it on the company. If it’s illegible, that means it’s really important. Like the $175 cancellation fee.

I boldly predict that absolutely nothing will change. Wireless companies will still offer crappy service and confusing plans, and people will still complain in droves.
