Rupert Murdoch’s social networking site MySpace has deleted a total of 250,000 underage profiles, the company said on Friday as it attempts to quell concerns about the safety of its young users.
Some MySpace users have been concerned that after the site’s $580-million acquisition by Mr. Murdoch’s News Corp, the site could go too far in censoring and controlling content.
However, the rapid growth of the site, along with the acquisition, mean that MySpace must figure out how to effectively monitor a teenage population larger than France while answering to News Corp shareholders.
MySpace spokesperson Dani Dudeck said that the site dedicates a third of its workforce, 90 employees, to issues of safety and customer care.
I like the part at the end of the article where they say, “MySpace…can either block offensive content, delete users, or in extreme cases contact law enforcement.”
It difficult doing business with people you don’t know.
Heck, it’s difficult doing it with people you do know.
I see myspace as pretty much useless, at least from
my space here. A generation lost in space with some corporation spinning out of control. It’s like flying a kite on a day with no wind and then pretending it’s windy by running down the hill faster.
John, by your last comment are you suggesting that MySpace not do anything when the act is obviously illegal if not questionable.
I just saw a Katrina news clip where the news videographer was blithely sailing past people stranded on a roof as he took video for the evening new. The people on the roof were asking “Are you going to save us or continue taking pictures”? What would you do?
I got into a really nasty debate about that Katrina news people passing people stranded thing. He was against it. Said it was the job of the regular rescue people, not a reporters job.
While I consider Myspace to be a teen porn/hook up site and not much more, I think it is good that they at least try to monitor it. Lets face it, they have been getting a lot of negative publicity of late about pervs and stuff crusing the site.
