Is this what they mean by “flipping the bird”?!

Associated Press – Apr, 04, 2006:

A showdown may be looming over a free wireless internet network that New Orleans set up to boost recovery after Hurricane Katrina pummeled the city.

Calling the network vital to the city’s economic comeback, New Orleans technology chief Greg Meffert is vowing to keep the system running as is, even if it means breaking a state law that permits its full operation only during emergencies.

He says he’s ready to go to court, if necessary.

“If you can get to the net, you can do business,” Meffert said

This is the most logical thing I have heard from this city since katrina.

  2. clockwork oranjaboom says:

Meffert should force the issue to court- then the obtuse and self-serving position of the Telcos could be exposed to ordinary folk. And….
it would be nice to see something positive come out of this SNAFU.

  3. garym says:

hey, Philly was able to push their WiFi system through despite the Telco’s objections. If NO needs help, I’ll donate funds to their legal defense if I can. (I don’t know if you can donate to a governmental body for court actions.)

  4. Brilliant! There’s no better remedy for 21st century cynicism than to see a politician acting with a full understanding of the issues and a willingness to stand up for the wellfare of his constituents.

  5. AB CD says:

Who’s paying for this free wireless internet? Sounds like there’s a telco or cable company at the back end making more money than otherwise. Does Halliburton sell bandwidth?

  6. Mr. Fusion says:

    AB CD

Good point. I think Halliburtan only “re-sells” bandwidth. There is more profit in re-selling.
