CBC News: CIA head Goss resigns, no reason given — OK, let the gossip begin!! Bloggers, on your mark, get set…
The head of the CIA unexpectedly resigned on Friday after less than two years on the job.
U.S. President George W. Bush, who made the announcement in the Oval Office, thanked Goss for his service. It’s the latest in a series of second-term shakeups in the Bush administration.
“He has led ably. He has a five-year plan to increase the analysts and operatives,” said Bush, who stood beside Goss while speaking.
Goss, who didn’t give reasons for his resignation, said he leaves the agency on “a very even keel, sailing well.”
“I honestly believe that we have improved dramatically,” he said.
Bush nominated Goss in August 2004 as the spy agency struggled to recover from intelligence failures linked to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and questionable evidence used as the reasons behind the invasion of Iraq.

I’d say he’s done a heckuva job.
He’s obviously quit because the Bush administration has won the war on terror and there’s nobody left to spy on.
And he will be missed greatly too. Especially by his chauffeur, who now needs a new gig.
You don’t choose to do Friday afternoon press conferences except for bad news. It leaves the weekend to play catchup.
1. Goss may be such a PR dunce, he didn’t think of that. Though, I can’t believe he gave Cheney and Rove only 5 minutes notice.
2. It could be sad news, health, etc.. That’s always a shame. But, the usual drill in that circumstance is to wait for Monday morning and get pity rolling for the week. He’s been ill and close to death before.
3. It could be that Goss has turned up some crap too filled with the stench of corruption for even a politician from Floriduh who used to be a professional gusano-handler for the CIA.
Hopefully, some journalist who actually thinks they should act like a journalist will turn up the story.
He might be quitting to run against Katherine Harris.
As much as we might like for it to be the whores, there are reports that Old Porter lost a catfight with John Negroponte over who got to doctor intelligence for Little bush.
Funniest quote, so far, was Keith Olbermann saying this was Goss’ reward for turning the CIA into another FEMA.

It’s pure speculation that the “person who now holds a powerful intelligence post” is Goss, but you wanted gossip, so there’s your gossip.
I think Brenda’s idea might be the closest. After Goss cleaned out so much of the top intelligence officials from the CIA, it would truly insulting to be beneath Negroponte, a political appointee.
Reasons for quitting:
a) After 18 months in a true position of power, and privy to the truth about what the administration knew, when they knew it and what they did with it, he said to himself “I am a man of honor, and I want nothing to do with these Bozos”, and quit… (read this in a whispered tone… just like Powell did).
b) He wanted to implement important changes that did not agree with the Administrations plans… so he felt useless and quit.
c) The CIA hated him because he is a Bush assppointee, and with the CIA professionals privy to the truth about what the administration knew, when they knew it and what they did with it, they made monkey faces at him at every meeting, and he quit.
d) He asked for a Medal of Freedom for his incredibly good job, and even Bush realized that that would be too embarassing, so he quit.
e) He found Osama and Zarqawi, but the Bush administration would do nothing about them because eliminating them would weaken the “War on Terror” justification, so he quit.
f) Most likely reason: He was being asked to do stuff that is outright illegal (and possibly immoral), and quit rather than continue to be a party to the wholesale breaking of the laws and disgracing of the principles of our country, he quit.
Only the captain is suppose to stay on a sinking ship, and generally then only on the movies.
I’m personally wondering if Goss’ resignation has anything to do with the Duke Cunningham/Prostitution Ring Investigation.
Though after Claude Allen resignation after being caught trying to defraud Target, anything’s possible.
from what I can gather, this is highly unusual in that the White House was really caught off guard. No one was expecting this. Be it was so sudden says that there is definatly something big under the bed.
While a sex scandel wouldn’t surprise me any, I don’t believe that it will be just a Republican one. Though Democrats usually have their sex scandels on their own, they don’t need lobbiests to find their sweeties.
So now the CIA is doctoring intelligence or something? Just yesterday, Scootre Libby’s lawyers announced they’ll be bringing witnesses saying that Wilson told them his wife worked for the CIA., other countries’ intellignece services have been standing by their WMD claims, new documents have been found linking Iraq and Al Qaeda, but I guess it was all made up, and Porter Goss wanted nothing to do with it.
One word…Hookergate…
Finally an administration change that could actually be meaningful but nobody seems to get it.
He’ll probably write another embarrassing exposê on Bush’s incompetence and get SwiftBoated like everyone who works for Bush and dares tell the truth.
With all the Administration bluster about taking action against Iran, and all the CIA-attributed statements that Iran won’t have weapons for 5 or 10-years – this may just be Goss getting out before his agency’s recommendations are ignored/distorted in the lead-up to an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Sorry for all who thought it was a conspirousy……looks like good old turf warfare cost Goss his job. All you have to do is look at the possible replacements….all are assistants or aides to Negroponte.
It’s too bad that this will scroll off the bottom before it gets a chance to be discussed.
The truth is starting to come together.
The resignation of the CIA director is building up to be an actual conspiracy.

Hayden, the proposed new chief of the CIA, was previously in charge of the NSA. He strongly supported the questionable wiretapping program, ‘rendition’ and other deeply questionable programs.
Negroponte, the National Intelligence Director, and a Bush administration insider, did not get along with Porter Goss, because Porter Goss, the outoing CIA director, had serious doubts concerning the issue of wiretapping.
So it turns out that Bush, Negroponte and Hayden got together and decided that the Director of the CIA had to go. If Porter Goss had qualms about doing the President’s bidding, regardless of legal qualms, he had to go.
So now Hayden is now being promoted to DIrector of the CIA, and Goss is out. Another full Neo-Con insider grabs a position of absolute power.
And so the checks and balances slowly crumble. If you disagree, you are out. There is no room for differing views or contrarian advice in the governing cabinet. By Presidential proclamation, the laws of the country do not apply to those in power. If you fall out of favor, expect to be airbrushed out of the photos.
Slowly but steadily the USA is losing the Cold War, becoming what we fought so strongly against. And we do this in the name of freedom and democracy.
Remember, the masses were also enchanted by Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot, Castro and (I say this with dispair) also Hitler. Are we heading towards totalitarianism with a smile on our faces? It certainly seems that way.
