Gene reveals mammoth coat colour
The coat colour of mammoths that roamed the Earth thousands of years ago has been determined by scientists.
Some of the curly tusked animals would have sported dark brown coats, while others had pale ginger or blond hair.
Dr Hofreiter said it was unlikely that mammoths had varied coats for camouflage.
He said: “They were very big – so even a blond mammoth would have been easy to spot.”

Now we know what colour the wooly mammoths were that Adam and Eve rode on when they were hunting dinosaurs.
This is pretty neat though.
Wasn’t this already known from bits of frozen mammoth that have been dug up? I remember a documentary a few years back that showed a chuck of mammoth dug out with quite a bit of hair still in tact. It was a darkish, reddish brown, with some variation between hairs.
I thought so as well. I remember a special on Discovery Channel where they were attempting to find intact sperm cells from Mammoths in order to impregnate a female African elephant…..then do the same to her female young. Rinse and repeat until the animal is 90% pure Mammoth.
Not sure if they ever found some.
I would have said FUZZY..
Umm, who the fuck cares?
What’s the Iraq/Iran/Korea thing again — as in, let’s actually talk about something that will matter tomorrow or next year…
Criminy!
