This was captured from FOX. A ludicrous non-story that is somehow a news alert.

Imagine if Fox was left-wing and used this same approach to “news.” It’s ridiculous. This is what we now have to deal with as a nation — useless media.

Juvenile, yes, but it makes the point.

NEWS ALERT: I have no proof that “W” has an I.Q. of 90!

It’s a good thing we don’t have useless government.

The graphic is poorly phrased, but what is being reported is news. There is a question out there, despite both parties in our country wanting to jump ahead, as to if this was really a nuclear detonation… or just a whole bunch of TNT.

The fact Japan can not yet confirm the blast is, by itself, news… but news that needs context. Context being something Fox News struggles with, to be kind.

  4. joshua says:

Actually, several reputable scientific nuke groups were reporting that they weren’t all that sure that there really was a nuke test this morning.
Based on previous underground tests around the world, they felt the seismic tremor was to small……more in line with a large cache of conventional weapons that may have been set off to trigger a nuke blast, but the nuke part fizzled. Our own radiation detection planes that have been flying the area for some time report no radiation at all. It’s very common for underground tests to emit some radiation leakage.
While they may have attempted to set off a nuke, there really is some question about if they succeeded. Even the second tremor today isn’t right.
So while Fox may be dumb in how they present it, the fact is, they may be right.

Its all about fear. Joe sixpack doesnt read beyond “Alert “and “North Korea” and Nukes. If I didnt believe in free speech, no matter how stupid, I would like to see Fox cited for shouting FIRE in a movie theatre.

  6. mxpwr03 says:

The same could be said about CNN & MSNBC in terms of poor reporting. It may not be the best news, but from time to time they do have viable stories. I would like to see the American people pick up the Wall Street Journal everyday as I think this is the most creditable news outlet in the world. However, consumers are free to choose and by and large they tend to choose Fox News above all cable news outlets combined. For the record I do enjoy watching Bill o’Reilly as he is quite comical.

  7. malren says:

Boy, it’s a great thing we singled out Fox News for this criticism! Because MSNBC, NBC, ABC, CNN, or CBS would never, ever do something like this.

    Nope. Never.

  8. Bill M says:

Interesting you chose to dump on Fox, John.
    Your bias is showing.
How about this headline from MSNBC
“No signs of possible new N. Korean nuclear test”
    Guess this is responsible reporting.
    Give me a break!

  9. ZeOverMind says:

On a news cycle of this importance, I wish the news media would also focus on this story which pretty much shaped the events of today:

  10. AB CD says:

If one day after the media announces a forest fire, the next day they have the headline,”Firefighters in Wyoming report no knowledge of forest fire.’ would you consider that newsworthy? Wouldn’t you expect the Japanese to be watching some of their neighbors?

  11. god says:

Pretty good, John. You accounted for just about every right-wing pop tart and dittohead in the neighborhood — in just one shot. I guess “defending” Fox (of all things) is a party line requirement.

  12. Noname says:

Its all about getting eye balls. I guess they succeeded, didn’t they?

It not about accurate and certainly not complete reporting. You would watch it once and be informed enough not to need to watch anymore. Where is the money in that? What do you expect when new is a profit center.

If you want to fix this stop watching!

  13. #8 Bill
I would have dumped on anyone doing a non-news item…It just so happened that a reader sent in THAT screen shot. So I ran iwth it. I’d be just as happy slamming CNN or anyone. Contribute some other examples yourself instead of carping.

Here’s an example of slamming a non-Fox network. I do it.
    http://www.dvorak.org/blog/?p=7462

Oh, and I think Bill Maher sucks too. Does that make you feel better?

    Cripes!

  14. malren says:

#11 – Way to miss the point, jackhole. But go ahead, you keep thinking it’s about “defending Fox” and not about slamming *all* television news as empty and vapid while pointing out that John singled out one news organization for something they all do.

If that helps you sleep at night, you go ahead and keep thinking it.

  15. RTaylor says:

The fact is the older you get the less you tend to suffer fools from any quarter. Then you loose you mind and it doesn’t matter anymore.

  16. Bob says:

Sensationalism exists in all the main media outlets. Now if you really want lies try Dan Rather.

  17. Mr. Fusion says:

#16, Even though it seems to drift towards rep. [Fox] has some good analist, from time to time.

All of Fox commentators are analist. Though, I prefer the term assholes better.

  18. smith says:

I saw the same “non-news” on MSNBC and CNN last night.

  19. moss says:

So, smith — even with your rose-colored glasses on, did you notice that it wasn’t featured as “breaking news”?

  20. moss says:

Mr. Fusion — that is the most subtle, accurate chuckle of the morning!

  21. Mr. Fusion says:

#11 – Way to miss the point, jackhole. But go ahead, you keep thinking it’s about “defending Fox” …

Let’s count the posts so far.

    #1, off topic,

    #2, off topic,

#3, The graphic is poorly phrased, but what is being reported is news. pro Fox

#4, So while Fox may be dumb in how they present it, the fact is, they may be right. pro Fox

    #5, anti-Fox

#6, For the record I do enjoy watching Bill o’Reilly decidedly pro Fox

    #7, sarcasm, pro-Fox

#8, Your bias is showing. pro-Fox

#9, off topic, still blaming Clinton for Bushes failures.

#10, weird analogy, defending Fox, I think.

    #11, anti-Fox

    #12, objective observation, leans anti-Fox

#13, objective defence, I don’t like Bill Maher either.

#14, decidely pro-Fox. Oh, that is you !!!

So, the score for the first 14 posts are:

    Off topic 4

    Pro-Fox 7

    Anti-Fox 3

Now, if you believe this is about slamming ALL news outlets, then please post some examples of where the REAL news sources broadcast non-news news. But be prepared because I know there are at least 10 screw ups by Fox for every one you will find for the REAL news outlets.

  22. malren says:

“I know there are at least 10 screw ups by Fox for every one you will find for the REAL news outlets.”

Holy christ. What’s worse, that this idiot believes in his “real” news outlets or that he votes?

  23. mxpwr03 says:

First off Fusion, and all you other ravaging anti-fox activists, I watch (I’m assuming other people in this thread do as well) about an hour of cable news a week. The exception is made for CNBC, which I watch during trading hours, & for Mad Money, along with the legendary C-SPAN. My news sources consists of The Economist, Janes Defense, Wall Street Journal, New York Times (occasionally), and the BBC World online, oh and of course several tech podcasts and non-fiction books. So calm down, take a step back before you start generalizing what it means if a person is “Pro-Fox”. So I like Bill O’Rielly, you probably like John Stewart and it is probably for the same reason, they are comical! Did you ever watch Cross-Fire on CNN when it was on? There’s a prime example of not “news coverage” but instead talking heads. By the way I love the statistic of how Fox News has more viewers than the other 3 cable news sources combined! Maybe their “conservative brainwashing” is really effective, but I doubt it there is probably another endogenous force in the model. Maybe you guys should do a research paper, but that would take more effort than a couple of broad, generalized statements.

  24. Mr. Fusion says:

#23, so instead of answering the challenge, you attack the messenger.

Fox is not a bona fide news source. They have no journalistic integrity at all. In short, they are a privately owned propaganda organ.

  25. Pmitchell says:

why is there such a burning hatred of fox news. (this is not aimed at you dvorak I remeber the story about the mic on in the bathroom at CNN you ran and many others ) I just want to know why it seems all liberals have such a hatred for fox news , I actually like it ,especially the morning show, and to me it seems that most of the time they live up to the fair and balanced theme. I always see a pundant from both sides and they both get to speak and only on very rare occasions have I seen the announcer on fox shut down the pundant and it is usually because they are spouting spin (and yes I have seen both sides get shut down not just democratic ) I watch CNN and only rarely do I see pundants from both sides( I like glenn beck though) and then there is the far out freaks on cnbc that just scream at any one without their view or simply hold up facemasks of the competition, and just seem to act off the wall.

also if FOX news is so bad why is it trouncing all other news outlets in ratings, to me it seems they are doing what the public likes, just not necessarily what the liberal left likes

  26. mxpwr03 says:

Thank you Pmitchell, a voice of reason

  27. Mark says:

    24. “By the way I love the statistic of how Fox News has more viewers than the other 3 cable news sources combined! ”

This is a seriously frightening statistic, if true. Sean Hannity, is I think, the antichrist.

  28. smith says:

#20 Actually, moss, it was reported as “breaking news.” Furthermore, I was disgusted with the emphasis being placed upon what was obviously a bit of hysteria on the part of some people in Japan. But I refrained from making that comment because I could not be sure if it were MSNBC or CNN that was acting so foolish, and, unlike you, I don’t like making unsubstantiated charges.

But for the record, I saw the report only on MSNBC and CNN — Fox was a bit slow picking up the story and must have reported on it after I quit watching the news.

  29. #22 LOL
The site needs a good stat manager.

  30. sdf says:

good ol’ DU. An editor points out an absurdity (example: Fox news) and the dittoheads go into conniptions.

    Here doggy: equal time ?
