London Free Press – National News – Two paralysed from carrot juice — First spinach, now this.

TORONTO — A man and woman face a long, difficult recovery from paralysis after drinking carrot juice poisoned with the botulism toxin, a Toronto Public Health official said.

Dr. Elizabeth Rea, associate medical officer of health, said the pair, both from Toronto, are seriously ill in hospital after drinking the bottled carrot juice, which has been recalled in Canada, U.S. and Mexico.

“There’s every hope these two people will make it through and recover fully,” Rea said. “It can take months.”

There are also four cases in the U.S. from the tainted carrot juice — manufactured by California’s Bolthouse Farms and sold under three brands — and all four patients suffered respiratory failure, needing a ventilator to breathe.

More poor reporting since the brands are never mentioned.

The company itself from its website here blames the whole thing on poor refrigeration by the shippers. You can sense the lawsuits on this one. The company FAQ is here.

I knew that healthy stuff was bad for you, back to the coffee and cola for me.

  2. David says:

The brands are listed in the CBC article:

I saw on the news yesterday about a lettuce recall.
Via: link  [edited: use tinyurl for long links]

“Nunes Co. voluntarily recalled more than 8,500 cartons of what it calls its “green leaf lettuce” grown in the Salinas Valley on a single farm. The region has been at the center of an intense probe in recent weeks following an outbreak of infections caused by E. coli O157:H7, linked to spinach also grown in that area.”

What is going on with our water? Last I heard, the US wasn’t a third world country.

  4. Tom 2 says:

All these vegetables being contaminated, is giving a new meaning to the phrase “eating healthy”.

  5. neozeed says:

Wow, so much for this ‘health food’ nonsense! I’m going 100% industrial.

You dont hear about ecoli or toxins from General Mills… Oh sure diabeatis & heart disease, but those take decades to mature.

I guess bottom line is that food is bad for you…

  6. Named says:

    Neozeed,

Going from fresh to industrial takes a few days of getting used to. Namely, the saltiness and hog-anus taste of all “meat” products.

  7. 0113addiv says:

All we need now is for ketchup to become contaminated and we all DIE. OH, the HUmaniTy!!!…

  8. Tom says:

I have to agree with 7. If ketchup were contaminated. Our whole society would unravel. Pardon me can you pass the Grey Poupon. Can you imagine it? What would go on my hamburgers, eggs, sausages, chicken, tomatoes, cantelope, hot dogs, bananas, macaroni and cheese, pizza, and candy bars?

  9. sirfelix says:

Is there anyway that Bush can blame this on terrorists? As Americans, we have a duty to blame someone, right?

  10. OhForTheLoveOf says:

That’s okay… The cost of eating all healthy (read:non-industrial) foods is a luxury of the well off, just like health care.

  11. Ballenger says:

The same mutation factors that produce anti-biotic resistant bacteria will sooner or later result in strains of bacteria resistant to pasteurization. Drug resistance is already a major problem. Food looks like it’s not far behind. I’m not looking forward to ordering my milkshakes well done.

  12. Neophyte says:

#9 …. I was thinking right along the same line as you. It’s only a matter of time before this gets blamed on terrorism.

  13. joshua says:

the Salinas Valley looks like an FBI…FDA training ground. There are so many agents running around. First the spinich, then lettace 2 days ago, now the carrots. Want to bet where they were grown?

You can’t make a decent salad anymore.

But, all paranoia aside, people are starting to talk about sabotage. The FDA and the lettace company found traces of ecoli in water droplets on the leaves of the lettace plants. Whats up with that?

By the way, only the lettace company found the ecoli on it’s own and recalled their product BEFORE contacting the FDA. Nice to see at least one company thinking smart.

  14. ChrisMac says:

This happens all the time.. For some strange reason it’s getting more media attention now..

    Use your imagination

  15. Glouise says:

Back to basics…grow your own, clean it yourself and juice your own health drinks. If you get sick after all that, then perhaps your handwashing technique is lacking. More soap or perhaps soap the first time around next time. Glouise
