Lots of wacky crap going on out there over the game console releases. Notice the Reuters tag on the news item below. Only problem is Reuters knows nothing about it. Neither does any other news agency. It got some horrified reactions on Digg and where it was posted before people caught on to the joke.

TOKYO, Nov 20 2006 (Reuters) – Sony Corp. said on Monday its new video game console, the PlayStation 3, has a fatal flaw in its core graphics processor, and will require the recall of nearly 650,000 units, causing widespread shortages of the much anticipated gaming console through the US, Europe, and Asia.

Shares in Sony closed down 5 percent on news of the recalls at 3,730 yen, underperforming a 1.64 percent gain in the Tokyo stock market’s electrical machinery index today.

Industry specialists say the glitches appear to be the kind of hiccups that often plague console launches and are likely to have a lasting impact on the PS3 business.

“There are always small sorts of problems at launch … But this is huge. It may be that Microsoft’s XBOX 360 is going to dominate the console gaming market for the foreseeable future.” KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide said.

You’ve probably already seen the stories of the eBay sales like the guy who filled out the eBay form wrong and sold his $600 PS3 for $9.99 and the one who offered his for $100K that included the seller’s lifelong friendship. Cripes!

And, of course, can’t forget Taco Bell offering $12,500 worth of tacos in exchange for a PS3. At least they will be donating the games to hospitals and such.

Then there’s this odd story of the people who bought both PS3s, XBoxes and Wii’s just so they can smash them.

Whatever happened to, you know, playing games on them?

  1. Dustin says:

hmmm. something fishy here: “The PS3 was going to be launched in North America on Friday the 24th of November, this date has been pushed back until March 2007 at the earliest.” The European launch was delayed, not the US. But this sucks.

  2. James Hill says:

…and when Sony’s marketing machine gets it together, their hardware side fails them.

It’s nice to know that the 360 I’m selling is still the best of the generation.

  3. gquaglia says:

Who cares, its only a game console. I never understood the hype for an over priced piece of plastic.

  4. AB CD says:

They are clearly creating shortages to boost the price before the holiday season. I think this price gouging has to stop. We need to bring the industry executives in for questioning and slap price controls on their products.

  5. rctaylor says:

Drive to the library and checkout some decent books for gods sake. Volunteer in you community and do some good. Disrespectful young yahoos in your make believe digital life. I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it any more. The shrink changed my meds today and I’m packing for bear. 😉

  6. mxpwr03 says:

Yea price controls, that will solve the problem.

  7. Gig says:

Wal-Mart and BestBuy seem to be selling them for retail when they have them. The only price gouging I’ve seen is on the secondary market and Sony makes not a cent from that.

I saw the folks standing out front of Wal-Mart the othe day and said to my wife that they ought to just have an auction for the things and make more money off of them.

  8. Mike says:

#4, If they were deliberately creating a shortage to raise their prices, they would be charging a lot more than $600 retail for them… or do you not understand how market equilibrium work? It’s the arbitrarily fixed price that is creating the shortage, not the availability of units.

  9. dave says:

Sony is now the GM of consumer electronics…bigger is not always better

  10. ChrisMac says:

    http://www.smashmyps3.com is worth a larph

  11. Pfft, whether true or not this is very believable considering Sony’s penchant for making a quick buck.

  12. Amy says:

That looks photoshopped!! This is just a way to try to get the people who stood in line for 3 days to get a ps3, to take it back so these people can get one!!

  14. Dave Bro says:

Well this is bad news for Sony and PS3. First Assassin’s Creed and Grand Theft Auto IV are going to Xbox 360. Here’s a link. And so is Virtua Fighter 5. And a rumor saying that kingdom hearts 3 will go to the Wii. Can you say ouch. Sony is with there Blu-Ray anyways. And there where a crop load of PS3’s at my local Walmart and none of them got sold don’t even clear the shelves. But today I saw the manager of that Walmart have all the PS3 off the shelves and so where all the X3 Blu-Ray disk. A do to this Walmart being small I asked the manager what was going on and she said that Sony wanted them all back and that’s all she knows. And that’s all I know. Sorry.
