10 of 20 Reviews of Fatal Police Shootings “Missing”

The district attorney’s office, which is the only outside agency that usually reviews fatal police shootings in DeKalb County, is missing records on half the reviews it’s finished in recent years.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution requested records for 20 completed reviews on fatal police shootings in the county from 2001 to 2005. But the district attorney’s office told the newspaper it could not find records on 10 cases.

News of the missing files comes amid scrutiny of the DeKalb County Police Department, which saw a surge in the number of fatal police shootings last year. In 2006, there were 12 incidents in which officers shot suspects to death.

With no requirement to file legal documents regarding police shootings, predecessors of current DeKalb County District Attorney Gwen Keyes Fleming did not follow the standard filing system the district attorney’s office uses for criminal investigations.

If nothing else, the inability to locate the files shows the seriousness with which the DA’s office takes these reviews.

Must be in Jimmy Hoffa’s briefcase.

  2. Improbus says:

This is what I have come to expect from all “law enforcement” types. What ever happened to accountability? Oh, right, you don’t need that in a police state.

  3. Lauren the Ghoti says:

AND how much would you care to wager that the ones they can still find are “coïncidentally” the ones where the cops are in the clear?

  4. Mr. Fusion says:

As much as I want to give the police the benefit of a doubt, I still feel myself leaning towards Lauren’s comment in #3.

  5. tallwookie says:

#2 – thats true unless you get caught on video and its posted on Youtube – this doesnt surprise me in the slightest, its in Georgia after all

  6. Grrr says:

#2 – you’re trolling, but it provides an opportunity for the adults to consider that you’re missing out on interaction with some great, principled people. This county is not representative of the majority of law enforcement officers. Reducing chaos all over the country is a more difficult task because of fiends like these DeKalb executioners… and a bigger mystery now is why Georgians aren’t shutting down the capitol with sheer numbers of furious protesters until justice is served. Do not for a moment believe that “all” LEO’s will welcome or will assist in more restrictive totalitarianism…

  7. Mr. Fusion says:

Improbus a troll??? I don’t think Improbus really means that every cop is bad. His point is that there are enough instances to suggest that the police have become responsible only to themselves, not the civilian authorities that oversee them. (at least that is the way I see his post)

Coincidently, I notice that #3, 4, & 5 all seem to agree with his general thought.

  8. Improbus says:

#6 – I am not trolling. That is how I actually feel. I trust law enforcement officers, prosecutors (all lawyers actually) and politicians (party doesn’t matter) as about as far as I can throw them.

  9. Grrr says:

Improbus – My apologies for overlooking that you expressed an opinion. I reacted impulsively and unfairly to the word “all” in your post. (It’s hard to object to substituting “most”… though causes and remedies are less clear to me.)

Instead of attempting to explain further – just this. I regret my insinuation that you had some ulterior motive. In addition it’s not lost on me that I slipped into ad hominem and you rose above it. In such exchanges, I learn.
