NASA’s Spitzer, Hubble, and Chandra space observatories teamed up to create this multi-wavelength, false-colored view of the M82 galaxy. The lively portrait celebrates Hubble’s “sweet sixteen” birthday.
X-ray data recorded by Chandra appears in blue; infrared light recorded by Spitzer appears in red; Hubble’s observations of hydrogen emission appear in orange, and the bluest visible light appears in yellow-green.

Remember when NASA was about going places, and not pretty pictures?
If you’re under 40, the answer is no. Hopefully the long term plan for NASA will get a little more cash, and pans out.
Wonder what Internet speed other intelligent lifeforms got.
Thanks Bubba, a new desktop background for me.
Isn’t this merely a byproduct? From what I understand, the spirit of exploration still lives and breathes in this type of work? I’m just a very minor armature astronomer, but through lists and such, it’s become evident to me that this work is productive.
#1, James Hill, Remember when NASA was about going places, and not pretty pictures?
We’re roving on Mars, the Galileo mission at Jupiter is working well, Cassini-Huygens has sent invaluable data (and pretty pictures) from the Saturnian system, the New Horizon probe is on it’s way to Pluto, the STEREO satellites are enhancing our knowledge of the Sun, etc.
I admit, another manned mission to the Moon would be cool but we’ve got some great missions in progress right now.
NASA’s current success rate isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty darned good.
#3, Mark, grab your 5 inch Schmidt-Cass and gaze at Jupiter around midnight tonite. Amazing. Here’s an online simulator from NASA / JPLthat might interest you:

Keep bringing on the pic’s BubbaRay they are great!! The links are interesting as well.
6. By midnight tonite, I’m liable to have my drink on, then maybe I’ll get 2 for the price of one. But yeah, I saw Jupiter last night, always a treat to see the moons.
Looks like God can’t handle a bean burrito.
#7, KVolk, thanks, I’ll do my best. I’m glad someone enjoys the pix.
