So, who will be the first on your block to die from this just like all the stiffs tasers have produced by overeager (ie, sadistic or just badly trained) cops? We blogged about this just over a year ago. Looks like things are now heating up (haha — got a million of ’em!) for the device. If this is too much, remember the vomit weapon?

U.S. Eyes ‘Pain Beam’ for Home Security, Law Enforcement
Burglars break into an apartment, hoping to pick up some expensive electronics or jewelry. But they’re out again, empty-handed, within seconds, howling with pain and surprise. They’ve been driven back by waves of intolerable heat: Entering the apartment is like stepping into a furnace. It’s the Active Denial System, or ADS, at work, the ultimate in home protection … among other uses.

Also known as the “pain beam,” ADS is a revolutionary non-lethal weapon that uses microwaves to cause burning pain without injury. The 95-GHz waves only penetrate a fraction of an inch, heating the outer surface of the target’s skin. According to the Air Force, nobody can tolerate the beam for more than five seconds, and improvised protection such as wrapping yourself in wet towels or tin foil is useless.

There have been repeated calls for ADS to be deployed in Iraq, but the military is bogged down in reviews of the technology. However, now that ADS exists, the pain beam’s manufacturer is exploring domestic U.S. uses, like industrial- and home-security systems. The Department of Energy is looking at employing the technology to protect America’s nuclear stockpile. Meanwhile, some U.S. law enforcement officials are eager to get their hands on the pain weapon, and the Department of Justice is funding a multimillion-dollar research project to give it to them.

A device that causes intense pain but leaves no physical or chemical traces could easily be abused.

Hmmm… A high-tech rubber hose for where your nightstick and foot fear to tread.

  1. Hmeyers says:

Tasers have more than likely saved a lot of lives, where a bonehead police officer would have instead shot the suspect/criminal/innocent person if they didn’t have the taser.

Everything gets misused, less just makes the toys that can be misused less lethal.

After all, the abuse of new toys always generates a lot of outcry and media coverage so it isn’t like corrections won’t be made.

  2. Uncle Patso says:

There is a fairly constant stream of news stories about how large numbers of home security system false alarms are costing police departments money and time.

I can hardly wait until the raft of stories about home alarm customers zapping themselves with this thing.

  3. gquaglia says:

Anything that avoids the use of deadly force is a good thing. Nothing is 100% foolproof. You can die eating a piece of KFC chicken.

All the cries against Tasers and other non lethal weapons are nothing more then the rantings of anti police and anti government types who hate authority in all its forms.

  4. Chacha says:

I’m fine with people being tasered and using this new technology, I’m just annoyed when it gets abused and then the court system does nothing about it.

  5. Aaron_W says:

The ultimate torture tool. The Neo-Cons probably have a hard on right now just thinking about it, and the cops are salivating about the possibility of watching Americans writhe in agony from it.

    Woot!

  6. GetSmart says:

Just wait until this piece of fascist evil burns someones child’s eyes out. Maybe these people should be sued out of existence for building a device that will certainly be misused for crimes against humanity.

  7. gquaglia says:

#5 & #6 I guess you rather people be shot dead, as there would be no other option. I somehow guess that you are the anti authority anti government types that I mentioned in my post. Tell me, how many hits of the bong have you had today?

  8. TomB says:

    7->
These things are designed to be used on individuals. They are designed to be used on masses of people — like those excercising their rights under the Bill of Rights. Murders don’t congregate.

BTW — A shield with 1/4″ of leather strapped to the front will block its effects.

  9. TomB says:

    8=>

    Oops!

These things are NOT designed to be used on individuals.

  10. Li says:

“Taser have more than likely saved a lot of lives, where a bonehead police officer would have instead shot the suspect/criminal/innocent person if they didn’t have the taser.”

Tazers have killed several hundred people. Further, do you really think that police would be shooting little girls and slightly obnoxious men in the back with their sidearm if they didn’t have a convenient torture device on hand to use on them instead? Tazers are used in circumstances in which well trained police officers should be using no weapons at all. Tazers are not at all superior to the clubs that they replaced, as they are expensive and have that false ‘non-lethal’ designation. After all, police used to know that if they beat someone about the head and kill them, they could get in a lot of trouble, but Tazers are a lottery as to whether they will kill you or not and you never ever get in trouble for using them, even on crippled old men and pregnant women.

As for this electromagnetic weapon, it was obviously designed as a torture device from the very beginning; the fact that it is a torture that can be used on whole crowds rather than one poor soul at a time makes it far worse than the rack or the iron maiden, in my opinion. In the hands of perfect angels, it might have positive uses, but how many perfect angels do you know?

  11. Ron Larson says:

So now all a thief has to do it throw the main electrical breaker on the house before entering. *volia* pain machine is disabled.

  12. gquaglia says:

Tazers are a lottery as to whether they will kill you or not and you never ever get in trouble for using them, even on crippled old men and pregnant women.

BULLSHIT Most Taser deaths have been attributed to other factors, not the use of the Taser. And I guess you don’t know much about law enforcement. They are accountable for every action they perform. Many cases are presented to civilian grand juries who find these officers acted accordingly and within the law. So if you think these officers are immune to scrutiny, they you obviously don’t know what the hell you are talking about.

As for this electromagnetic weapon, it was obviously designed as a torture device from the very beginning

Do you know this for a fact or are you pulling this out of your ass like your other statement.

  13. Hey, this sounds like a great “tool” for Dumbya’s jackbooted thugs to use not only against Americans, but against political prisoners, suspected terrorists, and anyone else that stirs their ire.

Throw out the waterboards, fellas! Just crank the Pain Machine on high, go have a few shots and beers, and come back in a couple of hours.

As long as there are no camera hogs like Lynndie England looking to record the events for posterity, who will be the wiser?

  14. Arpie says:

As mentioned, this is really easy to foil. It’s designed to barely penetrate the skin so as not to cause damage, so a little protection nullifies it.

The real applications: torture, (non-terrorist) crowd control and making millions from government contracts.

  15. >>I guess you rather people be shot dead,
    >>as there would be no other option.

Riiiiiight. That’s what cops have usually done in the past when a motorist wasn’t polite enough during a traffic stop, right? Pull out their Glock and shoot the motherfucker in the back.

    >>Most Taser deaths have been attributed to
    >>other factors, not the use of the Taser.

Riiiiiiiight. “Most Taser death” end up being attributed to “excited delirium”, which is coroner-speak for “the Taser killed him”, but which allows the company to weasel-word an explanation to make it look like the person would have mysteriously died anyway, had he or she not been tasered.

    >>And I guess you don’t know much about
    >>law enforcement. They are accountable
    >>for ever action they perform.

Riiiiiight. Then the cops circle their wagons, and you get an abortion like the Utah guy shooting the sullen traffic ticket recipient in the back, verbally abusing his pregnant wife and baby, and then the cops say “he was within the bounds of acceptable behavior”. Gak.

Since a significant number of cops can’t responsibly handle the Power and the Glory that comes with carrying a taser, they should not be allowed to. Maybe after an incident or two where they shoot a little girl or an unhappy motorist out for a drive with his family, they’ll realize it’s easier to just call out “Hey you, stop that!” than to shoot.

  16. chuck says:

Aren’t microwaves easily blocked by tin foil?

  17. Eden says:

Obviously you guys are not familiar with the fact that ALL officers’ have video cameras on and in the squad cars to protect themselves AND the public in case they come under investigation or are shot at and need to prove it. Also, when it comes to tactics to get info out of terrorists, there are psychiatrists and doctors on hand to tell the soldiers what IS acceptable as far as physical or mental attacks. They can only stay within these guidelines. Burning is NOT allowed! As a psychology student I know this. see “My Three Shrinks” blog for more on this subject.
I agree that this could like any other home protection system backfire on the owners and get them lol, but like it explains, it really shouldn’t hurt them seriously, just sting a bit. And as far as tazer guns go, my father was an officer and caught a murderer, and believe me, every cop I’ve seen, in RL OR on TV warns that you’ll be zapped if you don’t stop like 10 times. That’s the individuals own damn fault if they keep going.
There are ALWAYS bad eggs in a group but remember they are the few! Most soldiers, cops, firemen, etc. are exactly what they’ve always been…heroes. They were the ones risking their lives at 9/11 just like they do everyday, but we only seem to honor them for that one day. They know they may not come home, but they made that decision and get payed jack to do the work they do ($21,000 yr. for officers is high end pay here in Iowa!) So remember the next time you bump into one of them to wave or say thank you, you’d be surprised at how they’ll remember you and tend to return favors just for a kind word or friendship!

I think the bigger pain will be carrying that thing and setting it up.

“nothing more then the rantings of anti police and anti government types who hate authority in all its forms.”

What is your point here-I see none. If you are anti-police, anti-state, or hate governemnt authority, you should be shot?

Your are an idiot, and you should be shot.

  21. eyeofthetiger says:

Microwave guns are great for rodents and noisy neighbors.

What is your point here-I see none. If you are anti-police, anti-state, or hate governemnt authority, you should be shot?

Your are an idiot, and you should be shot.

Maybe in your case it would be appropriate.

  23. GetSmart says:

The indisputable historical facts are that, outside of natural causes, the leading contenders for large scale human misery are governments, religions and corporations. They may be necessary to some degree, but the idea that you should trust any of the above any farther than you can throw ’em, is not a very bright idea. Assholes aren’t truly dangerous until they rise high enough in one of the three to have large amounts of authority.

  24. >>That’s why I eat at Church’s or Popeye’s.

Jim Dandy isn’t bad either (if you can find one), but Popeye’s has the best biscuits.

  25. gquaglia says:

#24 Better hope then that you don’t get into a bit of a jam, maybe at a anti government really or pro pot outing or whatever, get out of control and the officer has to shoot you because the safe and effective Taser was not available to him. Yeah, that would be ashame.

  26. >>the officer has to shoot you because the
    >>safe and effective Taser was not available
    >>to him.

Holy fuck! Are you really as stupid as you make out?? If the “safe” (deaths notwithstanding) and “effective” Taser is not available, and cop with half a brain is going to do what he should have done in the first place, say “Hey you! Stop that! I know this is a peaceful demonstration, in favor of legalizing pot (which I smoke too)/ against Dipshit Dumbya’s idiocy (which I oppose too), but you’ve got to stay on the sidewalk”.

Are you seriously suggesting that, in the absence of Tasers, cops are going to start shooting guys in the back who act sullen when they get a traffic ticket while out on a drive with the pregnant wife and baby?

I know Dumbya wants to implement a police state, but I don’t think we’ve fallen THAT far yet. If we have, the terrorists have won.

  27. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#27 – If we have, the terrorists have won.

    The terrorists won on 9/12/01.

  28. >>The terrorists won on 9/12/01.

The terrorists won the minute Big Papi’s “supreme” court decided there was no reason to find out who Americans had actually voted for.

  29. Fargelius says:

Does the guy firing that thing look like Elton John ?

  30. gquaglia says:

in favor of legalizing pot (which I smoke too)

Certainly explains your anti establishment attitude. News flash, Mustard, the 60s are long gone. Time to retire that tie dye shirt and take a shower.
