London Free Press – Local News- Server laid off after shaving head for cancer charity

When she took part in a local fundraiser for cancer research, all Stacey Fearnall thought she had to lose was a full head of hair.

Instead, the 36-year-old server at Nathaniels restaurant in Owen Sound who raised more than $2,700 for the charity Cops for Cancer in exchange for her locks, was laid off when she showed up for work earlier this week with a shorn head.

“She had been a little nervous all day long, but I think she was still hoping in her heart that she’d walk in there and they’d be like, ‘Oh, wow — you look great,’ ” Fearnall’s husband John said in an interview yesterday.

“But that’s not the reaction she got.”

The mother of two, who was told by her boss to go home after she refused to wear a wig, was in tears when she returned home Tuesday just a half hour into her shift.

the woman’s boss should be sued back into the stone age.

up until last month, for 15 years, i had hair down to my waist. i had it buzzed for Locks of Love. she should be commended for making that sacrifice, not fired.

    i know from experience.

Nope. I went, I browsed, I bought. Must be Kuzco-land blocking access.

    >>Bald chicks don’t look so hot.

I don’t usually go into diners to ogle the waitresses. The douche bag manager ought to have hot bacon grease poured on his genitalia.

Bald chicks look fine to me, as long as they’re just bringing me my BLT and Diet Coke. Plus, they have the added benefit that none of the lice and dandruff fall from their hair onto my plate.

Sheesh. If you get your jollies fantasizing about your waitress, you should probably think about getting a life.

  6. Mr. Gawd Almighty says:

    Sometimes life is a bitch.

While I sympathize with her, the owner is well within his rights to fire her. Geeze, the law even allows him to fire her because he doesn’t like the side she parted her hair on. He doesn’t a reason, he can just up and do it.

There are several laws that prevent reprisals from employers. I wonder how many readers here know how hard it is to get a court to enforce those laws.

And you know what? It is her fault because she should have known better than to piss off her boss. If he wants her to wear a red apron, she does or she is gone. If he wants her to wear a white blouse and black pants, she does or she is gone. If he wants her to wear a wig, she does or she is gone. It is called insubordination when you apply for unemployment.

  7. chuck says:

The law allows her to be fired with or without cause. She must be given reasonable notice, or compensation if not given notice. i.e. 2 weeks pay.

It doesn’t matter why she shaved her head. Why should it? If one employee shaves their head for charity, and another shaves their head because they feel like it – is it fair for the employer to fire one but not the other?

  8. Widgethead says:

    No good deed goes unpunished.

She looks fine and I see no reason why she couldn’t continue in her job. In this day and age people should be enlightened enough to get over trivial appearance issue such as this.

The boss is a first class jerk. A better spin for the business would have been to promote her action to give the business good PR, but then any PR must be okay, even if it says your business managers are Dilbert like pointed headed geeks..

  9. Borat says:

She should have just shaved the vagine.

[That would make lousy wig. – ed.]

” Hilliard admitted the story isn’t great PR for the restaurant, but as far as he’s concerned, it’s an internal staff problem.

Besides, he said he’s already heard from some customers who agree with him and say they would have been “appalled” to have been served at Fearnall’s table. ”

Talk about a dive. Seems like the manager may be right..he already has found the lowest asshole customers in the region. They deserve each other..and, I’m sure, the high quality gourmet food his microwave turns out..^_^. It would be interesting to see over time how their business fares. The manager may be well within his rights..but I fail to understand how it could have had the slightest impact on either her work or her customers enjoyment of their meal. Have these people never seen a bald woman before? Wow.

When my wife’s hair started to fall out from chemotherapy, I sat her down in the back yard and shaved her head.

She was lucky that she had a great head. I told her that she looked likee the babe in STAR TREK. But, she never went out in public without a scarf hat or a wig,

I hope the manager never has to go thru something like that..

The waitress is a very special person! she deserves an OBE!

My wife survives to this day. and her hair is slowly growing back.
I still kind oof miss the StarTrek look…

    #9, chuck,

I didn’t see the Owen Sound part when I first read the blurb. Yes, she does get her two weeks notice and, under Canadian law, she has much more protections than do Americans. My mistake and thank you for pointing that out.

The owner still does have the option of firing her. If he has decided that he wants uniformity in the dress / look of his staff he is fully entitled to it. From the story he apparently offered a wig to her.

Fairness has nothing to do with it. If that includes bald servers need wear a wig then so be it. If he wants his female staff to dress as 1785 wenches and the male staff as servants complete with powdered wigs then so be it.

  18. Mister Ketchup says:

Makes you wonder if the drapes match the carpeting.

  19. Mister Mustard says:

    >>If he wants his female staff to dress as 1785
    >>wenches and the male staff as servants
    >>complete with powdered wigs then so be it.

Yeah, if he did, then so be it.

In this case though, the guy’s just a dickwad. He never said anything about all his waitresses needing to look like Rapunzel. He just decided on the spur of the moment that he didn’t like the philanthropist lady’s shaved head, and decided to shit-can her.

  20. Hmeyers says:

“The restaurant owners said they told Fearnall well in advance they wouldn’t be pleased if she participated in the fundraiser and suggested she could have found other ways to support the cause.”

Uh, donate money? For research? I guess you don’t know too much about charity, do you Bozo?

  25. green says:

Lots of good that research money has done. Keep giving away your money like a good lil’ sheep and those working for charities will keep eating from the trough.

Don’t forget to pickup your ribbon/sticker/cookie at the door…

  26. Mister Mustard says:

    >>Lots of good that research money has done.

What would you suggest as a strategy to treat diseases like cancer, Bozo? Prayer?

  27. #28 – As a cancer survivor, I’m not at all interested in treatment – truly hell on earth, if there was ever such a thing. We will shortly see a vaccination against cancer which is a much better alternative.
