Note the fact that this fellow does not wear the black egal (looks like a black rope) with the shora (headscarf) but leaves the scarf unadorned. This usually means the person is a Muslim radical. The attire of the Middle East Muslims is coded in lots of ways. I’m always on the lookout for the missing egal when naive Western reporters are getting quotes or statements from various diplomats and experts in the Middle East. This creep accuses Western men of all being rapists too.

No big deal. What can you expect from a person brought up in a repressive regime and society.

  9. bobbo says:

If you start with the guys “value system” everything he says is correct. That assumes that the rape rate in the West is higher than in the Middle East==which makes sense to me that it would be regarding stranger rape, but maybe not with rape by family members. I would hope that family rape would be less than stranger rape?

Anyhow, with men and women being actually “different” it is hard for all kinds or erroneous associations to be made.

what happens when they run out of oil? King Saud once said he was raised in a tent in the desert and rode a camel. His son lives in a palance and drives a mercedez. He expects his grandson will live in a tent in the desert and ride a camel. The women folk to be carefully protected at all times.

  10. QB says:

bobbo: You’ll never get accurate sexual assault rates in Muslim countries. If there isn’t credible male witnesses (in some countries it’s 4) then the women reporting the assault will be charged with adultery.

The prison time for adultery under most interpretations of Sharia law is 2-3 times higher than sexual assault. Or, in a handful of countries they just stone the woman to death.

I used to live in the Middle East (not Saudi) and I never heard that.

The attire of the Middle East Muslims is coded in lots of ways.

This is very true, but usually to identify tribe. I think the black tassle you describe with the checkered scarf means Saudi tribe.

In the UAE where I lived, it is actually illegal to wear the local head gear if you are not in the family.

I think one reason you don’t see terrorists wearing that head gear is because _real_ Saudis (not just living in the country) are filthy rich and not as likely to become extremists.

However, there are still ways to guess that someone is radical. Bomb vests are pretty good clue.

If they wear their prayer garb all the time, it’s a clue (esp the little scull cap). A gigantic beard is another. Henna in the hair and beard is a clue. A bruise on the forehead is a clue.

But those may just mean the person is very devout, not violent.

I don’t mind if women drive. But the day when women are allowed to vote or run for public office – then we’ve got real trouble.

  13. Jopa says:

If you want to destroy this evil and dark culture these idiots are trying to force feed the entire world – buy a car that either uses much less oil or buy a fuel cell car when one is available.

Without oil, they are nothing and they will return to their natural state – which is a tent in the desert with a few goats and camel (if you are rich).

    Amen.

  14. About who says:

This is not about women at all, it’s all about him. His lifestyle, his dominance, his religion. Nothing to do with women at all. He sounds like a scared little man because his whole brainwashed life is going up in smoke.

  15. Ron Larson says:

Their attitude towards women is a lot like old southern racists attitudes towards blacks. Many took great pride in the care they took of their slaves, protecting them from the ugly realities of freedom. They honestly felt like they were doing them a favor and a service by providing a living, roof, and food.

A second point… I love how they love to toss out rape stats. Rapes don’t get reported in hellholes like KSA. As mentioned before, they woman must have 4 male witnesses, and she herself can (and probably will) be prosecuted for having sex outside of marriage.

And god help the foreign hired house help that gets raped by a family member while being imprisoned in her employers home. They have no protection or help.

Last point… what the hell is this “honor” they are so keen to protect? It is honorable to keep your daughters and wives uneducated and imprisoned. Must make you feel like a real stud.

  16. gregallen.. I have it on good authority and the last time I was in Dubai I got long lectures about all this headwear and the various pleats and folds and whatever. And I was able to tell what country most people were from by the details of the dish-dash too, as you mention. Keep an eye on the missing egal and you’ll see the connection as it becomes apparent. To the Salafist the egal is considered sinful adornment by many. Meanwhile they will do all those fancy folds, pleats and ridges. I do not get the logic myself. I think it is just “code.” My source for all this, let me say, was a “student” of the culture in the UAE.

  21. Greg Allen says:

    John,

I suspect your friend is on to something but putting way too much weight on it. If a member of the House of Saud or any other royal family turned radical, I think he’d keep the headgear. It comes with too many perks.

But of this I am certain: law enforcement would be foolish to try and spot radicals by how they look. The radicals would be really foolish to dress in a way that gets them spotted.

I say this because I have met or seen a number radicals and they looked just like the millions of other pious Muslims you see everywhere.

I doubt I met him but one of “Al Qaeda’s #2” was pulled from a flat literally in my neighborhood. From the picture in the papers, he looked like everybody else.
