Rather than risk getting caught, turn yourselves in. That’s the latest government strategy in its ongoing effort to dramatically reduce the nation’s ballooning population of illegal immigrants…

Julie Myers, director of ICE, told a Spanish-language network that “Operation Scheduled Departure” will allow illegal immigrants without criminal records a chance to literally “self-deport” by turning themselves in to her agents…

Under the new program, those still walking free will have the chance to walk into ICE offices, be processed and get a few weeks to arrange their affairs, pack their belongings and ship out of the country without being detained…

Immigrant advocates called it a laughable charade with little to no chance of succeeding without any carrots to offer self-deportees…

As far as I recall, breaking the law is still breaking the law.

We’re not discussing something principled like civil disobedience. This is a discussion about economic means and ends. As it always is about illegal migrant labor.

  1. Improbus says:

Did Dubya come up with this one himself? I think so.

  2. the answer says:

They think illegals live in fear of bullying cops and scrounge for food while in reality they live in closely knit communities who watch out for each other. Mostly against bullying cops. I guess it’s better to cope with how we treat our “fellow man” just because they are powerless to protect themselves (although being an illegal alien protects them from having car insurance and if one did rob you, do you think anyone including cops would put that much effort into bringing an unnamed person to justice.) Rather then sit in the desert with even more substandard housing and no work or care.

  3. Mr. Fusion says:

This appears to be a sensible option for illegal aliens. They can wait until they are caught and face time in jail, possible separation from family and especially their children, and a criminal record that will keep them from returning legally.

If the illegals don’t take advantage of this program, then don’t expect any mercy.

  4. Paddy-O says:

#3 I agree. It is a generous program. They should issue an amnesty for business. Fess up, report the workers and fire them or face HUGE fines, etc.

  5. Scamp says:

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

  6. George says:

But they can do this now without a government program!

Where I live, there is a charter bus that leaves every Saturday morning from the Mexican store for the border. Every illegal is free to hop on it and go for the low price of $65.

  7. moss says:

5 – Yup. My grandparents came in right past that piece of poetry. Legally.

Made it through Ellis Island. Became American citizens. Legally.

  8. MikeN says:

Why should companies have to ‘fess up? Most of the hiring is of people with ‘valid’ documents. So if you take someone with all the required paperwork, and say you think he is illegal or report him, all the usual complainers will come after you for discrimination.

Not only that, if the Social Security numbers don’t match, the Feds send you a letter saying that the non-matching should NOT be interpreted as a sign of being illegal or ineligible to work, and the employer should do nothing more than ask them to correct their paperwork.

They tried to change this to a requirement that you fire them, but a federal judge blocked it.

  9. Paddy-O says:

#9 I don’t agree. As an exec in CA for many years, I can say that isn’t hard to spot a bogus attempt. Most of these people don’t speak English. English is an acceptable B.F.O.Q. in CA.
That eliminates most of the problem right there.

  10. GregAllen says:

You know what almost every other country does to “visa jumpers” (as undocumented are often called.)

You must apply for a visa or visa change FROM OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY.

In those countries people must “voluntarily deport” themselves to get a legitimate visa.

It’s such a simple, effective system but Americans never learn from foreigners. Most have no idea what other countries do.

  11. Dave W says:

If only my Cherokee ancestors had had such a program! If only the West Germans had such a program for those who managed to scale the Berlin Wall! If only we hadn’t stolen California from Mexico fare and square! If only Congress hadn’t changed the immigration laws in the early 20th century due to racism and bigotry. If only Americans were willing to pick lettuce in the 100 degree heat for 12 hours a day!

    If only….

  12. Mister Ketchup says:

    Who will cut my lawn?

  13. Mr. Fusion says:

    #13, peahead,

And California was sold. Even Mexicans accept that fact.

Duh, California rebelled against Mexico and declared their own independence.

  14. alex says:

my brother works in a profession where he has many immigrants (presumably illegal) working for the company he works for. he says that any time any of them want to take a trip home to mexico, they just get caught, and enjoy the free one way trip. when theyve had their fun, and want to come back to the us, they just pay a coyote to take them back. there might as well not even be a border.

  15. ren says:

Um, no that was Texas, Fusion, they were independent at the time. California was purchased under the treaty of Guadalupe

  16. MikeN says:

#10, Yeah it’s easy to spot a bogus attempt, but you’re not supposed to do so. Why should the companies be fined when the workers have documents? Not only that the Feds know about the nonmatching SSNs. Why can’t they just show up and arrest them?

  17. Dwight David Diddlehopper says:

So many problems could be solved if we out-sourced some of of our prison system to China.

  18. Dr Dodd says:

    #17 ren

You’re wasting your time discussing history with Fusion. He has proven many times that he knows very few historical facts and is not above making it up as he goes. 🙂

  19. The Monster's Lawyer says:

#14 mr. ketchup – My son if you can get his lazy good for less than nothing ass out of bed. Good Luck!

  20. Scamp says:

#8 awwww, how romantic. Can you make a movie out of that?

We made a country out of it! Besides, borders are for pussies. Let’s get away from tribalism and start some communities.

  21. MikeN says:

    >Duh, California rebelled against Mexico and declared their own independence.

It’s true. Then they were attacked by the Russians, but they won the war, and that’s why there’s a bear on the flag.

  22. Mr. Fusion says:

Another thread hijacked by wing nuts.

California was ceded to the US, along with much other territory. The defeat of Santa Ana’s government and Army left Mexico in a precarious state. $15 million was given to the Mexican government to stave off collapse and civil war which would have involved the newly won territories.

There was also the claim the money was to pay for the damages caused by the invading Army but as I recall, Taylor refused to pay for any damages his army caused. It is also claimed that much of the money was never paid. If this was worth my time, I would dig a little deeper to find more material.

In 1846, settlers rebelled against Mexican rule during the Bear Flag Revolt. Afterwards, rebels raised the Bear Flag (featuring a bear, a star, a red stripe, and the words “California Republic”) at Sonoma.

[we] overthrow a Government which has seized upon the property of the Missions for its individual aggrandizement; which has ruined and shamefully oppressed the laboring people of California

—William Ide, Declaration from the Bear Flag Revolt
The Republic’s first and only president was William B. Ide,[9] who played a pivotal role during the Bear Flag Revolt. His term lasted twenty-five days and concluded when California was occupied by U.S. forces during the Mexican-American War.
The California Republic was short lived. The same year marked the outbreak of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). When Commodore John D. Sloat of the United States Navy sailed into Monterey Bay and began the military occupation of California by the United States. Northern California capitulated in less than a month to the U.S. forces. After a series of defensive battles in Southern California, including The Siege of Los Angeles, the Battle of Dominguez Rancho, the Battle of San Pascual, the Battle of Rio San Gabriel, and the Battle of La Mesa, the Treaty of Cahuenga was signed by the Californios on January 13, 1847, securing American control in California. Following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the war, the region was divided between Mexico and the United States; the western territory of Alta California, was to become the U.S. state of California, and Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and Utah became U.S. Territories, while the lower region of California, Baja California, remained in the possession of Mexico.

Notice, the word “bought” doesn’t appear.

Following the conclusion of the Mexican-American war of 1848, California was annexed by the United States and was admitted to the Union as the thirty-first state on September 9, 1850.

Oopps, it says ANNEXED, not bought.

  23. MikeN says:

Americans should just cross over into Mexico and demand amnesty and citizenship and that everyone speak English.

  24. Mr. Fusion says:

    #27, peahead

I understand your propensity to post irrelevant links, the few times you do, but fuck you. If you wish to argue history with a bunch of spanish speaking high school students then go ahead. In the mean time, this is an English speaking blog. Try posting some relevant links in English.

Geeze, you are an effen moran.

  25. ron says:

well I can see this will never work, the wets are sitting in there dirty homes full of roaches laughing at the stupid Americans again.think for a minute you ask for cheap labor. someone to cut your lawn, care for the kids, clean your home, cook your food.you ask for it and now that you see there not so cheap you start crying for help.your $8 an hour wet is actually costing the tax payer $40 million a year or more
