U.S. intelligence agencies conclude in a draft report that Afghanistan is in a downward spiral and they doubt whether the Kabul government can stem the Taliban’s rise. The classified report says corruption inside President Hamid Karzai’s government and an increase in attacks by militants operating from Pakistan have accelerated the breakdown in central authority in Afghanistan.
“Afghanistan is a difficult place. It has made progress since 2001. We have all talked about new circumstances that have arisen there and we are doing a review to look to see what more we can do,” Condoleeza Rice told reporters.
We are looking to see where some of the strengths are and how we need to support those strengths and also how we can help the Afghans where there are weaknesses,” Rice said.
The New York Times said the estimate, or NIE, is set to be finished after the November elections [No kidding] and will be the most comprehensive U.S. assessment in years on Afghanistan.
A senior official said last month estimates for many parts of the world were being updated for use by the next U.S. president, who will take office in January.
Everyone’s promised Afghanistan a new deal for decades. End result?

No one has yet conquered Afghanistan. The Soviet Union spent billions and sacrificed thousands of soldiers trying.
Luckily, the US has plenty of money and troops …
Both candidates blathered about how they were going to increase troop level and handle Afghanistan.
They are a people that are barely “iron age”. A tribal people who can’t really conceive of the notion of a nation.
For those men here with daughters; pull out a pict of your daughter as a little girl. Now, at that age, go sell her to the highest bidder.
We need to get the hell out of that part of the world and stop using fossil fuels as fast as possible to help the environment and stop $ from flowing into those types of areas.
The NIE will be available AFTER THE ELECTION, and Bush WILL STILL NOT READ IT !!! Never has, and won’t start now !!! Just like his PDBs – Presidential Daily Briefings, which if he had read in August, 2001, might have taken action to avoid the 9/11 attacks !!!
***MISERABLE FAILURE*** – IN SPADES !!!
Does it not concern anyone that there are people in the CIA or other US Intel agencies leaking classified materiel like a fracking sieve?
hey guys, i’m gonna be a conservative for the rest of the day, please tell me how i do.
#2 — there’s oil in afghanistan? that’s news to me.
#1 — the perpetrators of 9/11 are called al-queda, they used the power of the taliban to create a safe haven from which they attacked us. we must root them out and destroy them. prior conquerers had, well, conquest on their mind. we americans are precisely acting in self-defense in afghanistan. failure against al queda is not an option.
Shaddup, JimD. You’re not contributing.
#5 grog the brain dead caveman said, “there’s oil in afghanistan[sic]? that’s news to me.”
Where do you think the cash comes from to fund the Al-Qaeda & Taliban in Afghanistan, other than poppies?
Go back to your cave now.

From the way to type it is apparent that you suffer from Tourette’s syndrome.
Not to be picky but, you disrupt normal, intelligent dialog while contributing nothing but nonsensical noise.
It is sad to see Afghanistan in this shape, it should be one of the world’s top destination sites.
I can’t believe I am agreeing with Paddy but his comment in post #2 is dead on. I should probably mark this day on my calendar.
#10 Improbus said, “I can’t believe I am agreeing …”
If we sat down without a “screen” between us you’d find we probably have more in common than you think..
#4 “Does it not concern anyone that there are people in the CIA or other US …”
The data you see here was known BEFORE the U.S. invaded. At least, it was known by intelligent people in and outside the military.
No damage from talking about data that was widely known by members of the general public.
Is this a result of the “Splurge”?
Mission Accomplished!
#14 said, “Mission Accomplished!”
Not yet. Omama plans on increasing troop levels and funding until he “tames” the tribes in Afghanistan. LOL!
Does a persons IQ take an automatic 100 point drop when you start running for political office?
#15 – nope – only when you “quote” nutballs who you’re idjit enough to believe in in the 1st place. Go back and find us the Obama quote about “taming”.
We’ll wait.
#16 “nope – only when you “quote” nutballs”
I didn’t directly quote Obama. What are you talking about?
US Spy Agencies are obviously anti-troop.
Republicans called _me_ anti-troop when I predicted that rushing into Iraq would hurt the war in Afghanistan.
And they called me pro-terrorist and a traitor.
SO I guess US Spy Agencies must be anti-troop, pro-terrorist traitors according to the Republicans.
come’on people, get a clue..
the only reason we have to “surge” back to
Afghanistan is because the Taliban are burning all the poppy fields…putting a severe dent in the CIA backed heroin trade.
-now, just how are we going to continue to pass huge over-blown funding bills for our “war on drugs” and keep our subsidized/privatized prison system’s filled to the brim back home if we don’t eradicate the scourge that’s burning up the worlds main supplier of the pretty poppy?
-not to mention the thousands of methadone clinics that *shudder* -might run out of heroin addicts to feed methadone to?
-yup, gotta go stomp on those nasty
talibanskis
(btw, did we ever install a puppet in Afghanistan that would let our oil corps
finish the pipeline? -last i recall, someone reneged on the first deal a while back..)
-so many conspiracies, so little time.

The logical solution being proposed by Bush is to invade Venezuela/
The problem with #2’s answer, which I would otherwise totally agree with, is that these people are barely of an “iron age” due to the foolish greedy intervention of the west, us Americans being only one of many countries in that party.
We stirred the turd in the first place. How could we expect them to not respond in kind?
Now you just want to leave them to their own devices? They are still plenty angry with us and with good reason. We need to clean up our mess first, or they will bring the mess to us.
#21 “The problem with #2’s answer, which I would otherwise totally agree with, is that these people are barely of an “iron age” due to the foolish greedy intervention of the west, us Americans being only one of many countries in that party.”
Umm, no. The Renaissance happened in Europe. It didn’t occur anywhere else in the world. Technology advancement only happened when it was imported from the West. For whatever reason, the rest of the world was stuck in the Iron age or the stone age, regardless of the age of those civilizations being older than in Europe. Look at Africa, for instance.

(crawls back out from under rock to find)
from the Asia Times
“Afghanistan’s best chance for attracting foreign capital rests with its strategic location as a potential major transit route for Siberian and Central Asian oil and natural gas exports to South and East Asia. “
so they’re not really a producer, and probably won’t be. they’re just on the silk road.
go fill your opium pipe, paddy.
you read the article here
#23 no grok said, “so they’re not really a producer, and probably won’t be. they’re just on the silk road.”
What ARE you babbling about? Showing that there is nothing produced there just backs up my assertions.
#24
i was refering to your rhetorical question:
“Where do you think the cash comes from to fund the Al-Qaeda & Taliban in Afghanistan, other than poppies?”
it comes strictly from poppies/heroin, the stuff liberal hipsters think it’s soooo cool to be addicted to.
not oil.
just sayin.
you don’t make a lot of sense paddy.
#25 “not oil.
just sayin.
you don’t make a lot of sense paddy.”
Hmmm, Iran doesn’t fund terrorist orgs? Money doesn’t come out of ME oil producing countries to fund terrorism, including Al-Qaeda & Taliban?
You need to study up a bit…
#26 Iran’s flavor of Islam is the polar opposite of that of the Taliban, and in a weird sort of way, they actually supported us taking the Taliban out.
You see, they don’t like each other.
Besides, the Iranians really don’t like all that cheap heroin flowing over their borders.
You need to study up a bit…
#27 “Iran’s flavor of Islam is the polar opposite of that of the Taliban,”
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
We are a bigger enemy of Iran than is the Taliban…
The majority of the Arab world’s flavor of Islam is similar to that of the Taliban…
#28
well, anyway
the taliban sucks and so does iran.
i think we can agree on that.
have a good weekend, sir, i had fun.
#29 I too.
I just hope we can pull out and leave those people alone. They don’t need our “help”.
Have a good weekend.
