DENVER (CBS4) ― A babysitter’s parrot is being credited with helping save the life of a 2-year-old girl who was choking Friday at a Denver area home while the sitter was in the bathroom.
“While I was in the bathroom, Willie (the parrot) started screaming like I’d never heard him scream before and he started flapping his wings,” said Meagan, the babysitter. “Then he started saying ‘mama baby’ over and over and over again until I came out and looked at Hannah and Hannah’s face was turning blue because she was choking on her pop tart.”
Meagan performed the Heimlich maneuver on Hannah, which stopped the choking.
“If (Willie) wouldn’t have warned me, I probably wouldn’t have come out of the bathroom in time because she was already turning blue, her lips were blue and everything,” Meagan said.
“If anything happened to her, I don’t know what I would do,” said Samantha Kuusk, Hannah’s mother. “I’m very grateful for the both of them because they both saved her.”
Willie didn’t say much when CBS4 visited on Sunday. Meagan said he is usually pretty talkative.
“He says ‘I love you’ and he says ‘mama’ and he says ‘step up’ and some other words that aren’t so nice,” she said.
Polly wants a Pop Tart!
Of course the parrot said nothing when the news crew was there, the babysitter probably did something to the baby to stop it crying and went too far, then while trying to ‘resuscitate’ the kid thought up the whole parrot-saves-brat story to divert attention away from herself.
#1. Cripes! I’ll bet your a blast at parties!
The parrots waiting to spill the beans on the sitter.
Don’t hire that baby sister! Who would leave a two year alone more then a second!! When I go to the bathroom, my 20 months old is always with me. I rather they gag temporarily than choke to death!!!
#4…the kid wasn’t alone, otherwise we wouldn’t be reading this, eh?
Those birds are pretty damn smart.
I know I’ve complained before that the grey on white font in the comments section is hard to read, but the new white on white font is even worse!
Please go back to the original website format.
What if the kid did something else that a 2 minutes response would not have been sufficient to save her life? 2 minutes alone, means 2 minutes ALONE.
Maybe Hannah should be given fruit for breakfast rather than pop tarts unless the parrot can warn against obesity.
Why does #4 gag their baby when they go to the bathroom?
Good reason for the FDA to ban Pop-Tarts.
Okay so this pea brain understood enough to be upset and was concerned when a todler was choking.
It’s selection of words was also astounding. Mama would have been the woman and baby was well the baby. It was using language to communicate.
This suggests a brain a fraction of the size of a toddlers that was working on a toddlers level.
Pea brain deserves a treat or three.
#10 or ‘peabrain’ didn’t do anything when it saw the brat turn blue (or thought it was a mating display) and the whole thing was made up.
Which seems more likely?
That an untrained bird with the brain he size of a hearing-aid battery saw what was happening and sounded a remarkably coherent alarm effectively linking words it had learned together (remember, it was UNTRAINED), or that its being used as a cover up for the irresponsible actions of neglectful parents and/or an out of her depth and inexperienced babysitter who should never have been put in her position to start with?
I’m not saying the whole thing is a fraud, but when you look at what is claimed it sure does look like a con job.
A parakeet would be suspicious, but parrots are known to be very intelligent, studies showing them to be roughly equivalent to a human child.
The babysitter has hopefully learned a lesson about leaving a kid alone with food. I don’t think bringing the kid into the bathroom should be expected, though – sheesh.
Zybch…read this National Geographic article. Pay particular attention to the ability of the dog pictured. Prepare to be amazed and astounded.

I am surprised that no body has asked two obvious questions: 1. Why would any eat a pop-tart, especially a two year old and 2. How do you choke on a pop-tart?
#1. Zybch -> that is kinda scary mate. I think maybe you should go out into the real world. Its not as bad as the newspapers make it out to be.
#4. Brian -> 20 months old and you don’t let your sprog alone even to go to the bathroom! Fuck me mate! You must have an awful lot of spare time on your hands ….
i have the same exact bird. these birds have the mind of 4 year olds. they r so adorable and my bird even noes hoe 2 say a few phrases. but i dont think she would noe how 2 rescue someone. i think this bird is very smart. i dont think the bird would say anything either cuz the bird doesnt even noe these ppl.
