After Michael Steele referred to Rush Limbaugh’s rhetoric as “incendiary”–sparking a storyline of “Steele vs. Rush” that spread throughout the blogosphere–Limbaugh unloaded on the RNC chairman in an extended diatribe on his radio show.

Incendiary? You bet. As I noted earlier, Steele actually defended the thinking behind Rush’s desire for President Obama to “fail” during the interview in question–but from Limbaugh’s corner, the fight is on.

The back-story: CNN’s D.L. Hughley confronted Steele about Limbaugh’s speech this weekend at CPAC, in which Limbaugh reiterated his “fail” sentiments and brought down the house at the conservative conference. Hughley also asserted that Limbaugh is the de facto leader of the GOP–a point Steele contested.

“How is that different from what was said about George Bush during his presidency?” Steele said, defending the “fail” sentiment. And then: “Let’s put it in the context here. Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. His whole thing is entertainment…yes, it’s incendiary, yes, it’s ugly.”

Rush’s response: to throw down. Limbaugh asserted that Steele is not the leader of the Republican Party, the RNC is a failure, Steele wants Obama to fail, Steele is off to a “shaky start” as RNC chairman, and Steele had perhaps underestimated the intelligence of conservatives and of Limbaugh’s listeners as a whole.

I’m not wasting space on Rush’s evangelism. You can click the link to Chris Good’s article.

Although Steele’s latest requisite groveling before Limbaugh appears to leave Rush alone in charge of what remains.

Who do you think is in charge?

  1. Paddy-O says:

#30 – You’re babbling. You haven’t said why you mentioned Bush as being a conservative.

  2. The Monster's Lawyer says:

Satan is in charge of the Republican Party. Yo

  3. Hyph3n says:

Paddy-O is always on the ropes when he mentioned babbling… still, I’ll bite.

The main tenants of conservatism is reduced taxes and greater government intervention on social issues. On both, Bush succeeded. Competence is not a prerequisite.

You might say that Conservatism is about smaller government, but not even the saintly Reagan shrank the federal gov’t.

So, why is Bush not a Conservative?

  4. Paddy-O says:

    # 35 Hyph3n said, “The main tenants of conservatism is reduced taxes and greater government intervention on social issues. ”

Wrong. I see why you got confused.

  5. badtimes says:

While oxycodone isn’t heroin, it is a semi-synthetic opiate. And I think Rush admitted his addiction on his radio show.

  6. Rabble Rouser says:

    @Paddy-O
Yeah, and Reagan, who ran on tax cuts, only raised taxes, and led this country into big debt, not to mention a huge recession, massive unemployment, dismantling environmental regulations, and a whole rash of garbage.

In my not so humble opinion, someone who says that government can do no good, as Ronnie Rat did, should NOT be left in charge of it.

Oh, and BTW — When that bass turd wouldn’t fund AIDS research, he, in effect killed my brother, who contracted it early on, from a blood transfusion. That no good excuse for a human being called it a “gay cancer,” and refused to fund any research for care or curing it. From the day I found that out, Reagan went go down in my personal history as the WORST HUMAN BEING ON THE PLANET!!!

  7. MikeN says:

I love how various Republicans say the party is too rightwing, and needs to modernize. Then McCain gets nominated, and these same Republicans vote for Obama.

  8. smartalix says:

The fact that the GOP leader has to grovel to an entertainer demonstrates the intellectual bankrupcy and hypocrisy (token leader=token leadership) of the Republicans. Maybe a real conservative party will rise from its ashes.

  9. Li says:

“PRINCETON, NJ — George W. Bush remains popular among conservative Republicans (72% approve of him) despite his low overall approval rating. Meanwhile, moderate and liberal Republicans are as likely to disapprove as to approve of the job he is doing, and Democrats of all political orientations hold Bush in low regard.”

That was a 2008 Gallup poll. Tell me, how does being in such massive denial feel? I’ve never had much of a talent for denial, or compartmentalization, so I’m curious. Anyhow, whether or not GW was a doctrine conservative is irrelevant; he was your guy, and until the stink of his failure and the loss of your power began to tickle your nostrils, he was your daddy figure, your fuhrer, and any disagreement with his pronouncements was tantamount to treason. Do you really think we are going to forget that attitude? Do you really think we are going to forget all of the people that were arrested, merely for wearing the wrong t-shirt to a political event? Do you really think we are going to forget all of the journalists that lost their jobs from 02-06 for pointing out the distinct lack of clothing on the incompetent emperor? At least the liberals, as much as I find myself in disagreement with them, are capable of self-criticism. They tear themselves to pieces regularly, and you know, this is healthy. The other side seems to lack even basic self-awareness, and their authoritarian tendencies drive them to destroy all disagreement with the dear leader. . .

  10. Dallas says:

Like I’ve been saying, the GOP is in shambles. They are like lives lobster in a tank.

They’re best strategy to regroup right now is wish that Obama fails and to be impediments in Congress.

I’s a losing strategy and Rush Limbaugh IS the defacto “leader” now. How a former drug addict, sweaty and loud radio guy ended up as a leader is an enigma.

  11. Mr Diesel says:

    #38 Rabble Rouser

  12. Mr Diesel says:

    #38 Rabble Rouser

Sorry about your Brother but please get your facts straight before running Reagan down on everything else.

The number of jobs during Reagan increased by 16 million and federal revenue increased 15 percent.

  13. Paddy-O says:

    # 42 Dallas – Sounds correct to me.

  14. GregA says:

    #31,

Really? I remember during the criminal proceedings that Limbaugh wanted to introduce a back surgery as the reason for his addiction to the drugs, but the prosecutor raised an objection because it was not a back surgery, but that he would not object if he revealed the real reason for the surgery, and the limbaugh defense team never offered the real reason for the surgery in question. Also, if you look at the date of the surgery and addiction in question, it all happened right before he lost all that weight… Concidence theorists agree! He had gastric bypass, same as Star Jones.

  15. Hyph3n says:

If tax cuts and social issues are not the defining issues for Conservative, I would like to know what is (with specific examples of laws enacted, please.)

#42 Dallas… because Rush is the one national figure that can not be voted out of office. In fact, even showing a degree of bipartisanship could be a downer for his ratings.

  16. Mr. Fusion says:

#36, Cow-Paddy, Ignorant Shit Talking Sociopath, Retired Mall Rent-A-Cop, Pretend Constitutional Scholar, Fake California Labor Law Expert, Pseudo Military Historian, Phony Climate Scientist, Leading Troll Extraordinare, and Asstrologist

Wrong. I see why you got confused.

Once again, you missed the question. But, because you’re so inept, I’ll restate it for you.

    #35, Hyph3n

So, why is Bush not a Conservative?

  17. Mr. Fusion says:

For the Republicans to be looking for Limbaugh for their platform shows how weak and leaderless they are. John Beohner and Mitch McConnell should be afraid. Very afraid.

  18. jbenson2 says:

As Harry Reid found out, along with countless other pompous politicians:

You don’t tug on Superman’s cape
You don’t spit into the wind
You don’t pull the mask off an ‘ole Lone Ranger
And you don’t mess around with Rush.

Rush is laughing all the way to the bank.

  19. Dallas says:

#50 If there is one person that best describes the definition of pompous, that would be Rush.

Still, I completely agree with your points. The Democratic party is taking a risk by shining the light on Rush but I believe it’s a reasonable risk.

Having ordinary, struggling Americans see Rush as the leader of the GOP and then hear him say he wants our President to FAIL in the recovery will come back in 4 years.

  20. grog says:

if the economy does poorly under the obama administration, does rush limbaugh’s salary

    a.) go down
    b.) go up

    ?

    show your work.

  21. grog says:

if rush limbaugh ran america, everything would perfect, and my cat would start pooping flowers.

did you know that under a rush limbaugh administration, that

1.) you would pay zero taxes
2.) there would be zero deficit
3.) there would be zero pork
4.) there would be zero regulation
    5.) terrorism would stop
6.) every illegal immigrant would go home
    7.) crime would stop

sounds like the rambling of someone on drugs, oh, wait…

  22. Phydeau says:

Rush Limbaugh is a bully and a coward, that’s pretty clear. He talks real brave when he’s hiding behind his call screener and his cutoff switch. The few times he has ventured out, gone places where he is not in complete control of the proceedings, when smart people who disagree with him have been allowed to question him, he has been completely discredited.

On that video shown here a while ago, Rush basically said keep the yahoos mad and you’ll be a great success. Rush has been running a great con, and this could be just more of the same, upping the ante. But he’ll really get in trouble if he makes the mistake that so many con men make, and he starts believing his own con.

And the problem with upping the ante is that you have to say more and more outlandish things to top the last one. Publicly hoping that Obama will fail has perhaps crossed the line for all the non-dittoheads.

  23. Flip Wilson says:

    Plain. Simple.

Michael Steele exemplifies the classic definition of being a pussy.

    Spineless. Inept.

Sure didn’t take him long to find his tail flying up his own a$$ and skittering off to oblivion.

  24. bobbo says:

Rush is an idiot and has little to zero power. His “popularity” is being confused with “power/influence.” His image is that he has a lot, in fact, he has little.

It is all a popularity contest. He has “the most listeners on talk radio.” – – So What? Is this any different than Metallica being the most popular Metal Band? How much power does Metal have over the rest of the music industry? How close to zero is that?

Same with Rush. How much power do the dittoheads and religious wing nuts have on the rest of the body politic? Only a shrinking minority. The Repuglican “Leadership” is obviously rankling under Rush’s barbs but I think once anyone takes a stand and calls him out for being an “entertainer” as Olberman does everynight–Rush’s political power will plummet from 10% to zero.

And if thats not the truth, then its just what I hope to be the case. – – “Talk Radio.” uh-huh!

  25. smartalix says:

His “popularity” is being confused with “power/influence.”

Given the prestige Rush has been given by both the GOP and the press, I would have to say you are mistaken.

  26. bobbo says:

#57–alix==I haven’t seen any “prestige” lavished on Rush. The media is basically making fun of the Repugs being gutless. The GOP keeps showing it doesn’t respect Rush and then kow-tows. That is confusing an infotainer with a pundit.

Fact is: as long as Rush is “this powerful/influential/impactful,” the Repugs cant win a race anyway. Might as well break that egg and learn the new way.

And if thats not the truth, then its just what I hope to be the case.

  27. Phydeau says:

Given the prestige Rush has been given by both the GOP and the press, I would have to say you are mistaken.

To continue his analogy, Metallica is given prestige by the music world and the press, but that doesn’t mean the rule over the whole music world.

And what does “given prestige” mean anyway? I for one am fervently hoping that Rush starts believing his own con and ventures out from behind his call screener and cutoff switch. And he’ll get his ass kicked, as he has every time he’s done that, because he’s not a real thinker, he’s a demagogue.

  28. Ivor Biggun says:

Dvorak is the only person who posts decent stories on this blog.

  29. MikeN says:

    >The media is basically making fun of the Repugs being gutless.

The media is doing the Democrats’ bidding, starting with daily strategy sessions between Rahm Emanuel and George Stephanopolous, James Carville, Paul Begala, etc.

  30. MikeN says:

Hoping Obama will fail is a good thing.
If you think his plans are bad for the country, then you should hope that he fails in getting those plans passed.

Suppose GW Bush has come to Congress for a declaration of war against Iran(what happened to SY Hersh’s scare stories anyway?). Would you want the President to fail?
