“The choice would be electrifying,” writes Michael Sean Winters at “In All Things,” the group blog of America, the Catholic (Jesuit) weekly.
The biggest objection to putting Al Gore on the Supreme Court, I assume, would be that he’s not a lawyer. But is this really a bug rather than a feature? Gore spent sixteen years in Congress, where he helped make the laws, and eight as Vice-President, where he took care that the laws were faithfully executed. His perspective would fill some giant blind spots on the present Court, which is made up entirely of former federal appeals-court judges who have little or no political experience, have never been elected to anything, and have a strikingly narrow experience of life in general.
A law degree is probably a helpful credential, all other things being equal, for a trial judge or an appeals-court judge. But it is far from essential in a Justice of the Supreme Court. The heart of a Justice’s job is interpreting and applying the Constitution, and for that things like a knowledge of history (including Constitutional history), a feel for the workings of government, a strong moral sense, an ability to think and write clearly, and a temperamental affinity for the long view—all of which Gore has in spades—are much more important than a professional familiarity with the details of contract or case law. Gore would make a superb addition to the Court. And, of course, it is pleasant to imagine the opportunity his appointment would afford the four remaining members of the Bush v. Gore junta, especially Antonin “Get Over It” Scalia, to contemplate and, perhaps, repent of their sins.

My choice is Chelsea Clinton!
The Conservatives will be fighting any nomination anyway so give them really big to bitch and fight!!
Alternatively, any 17 year old high school liberal wold be great as there is no age limit.
When you take an objective look at the human misery already caused and yet to be caused by his Manmade Global Warming fiction – he should be executed for crimes against humanity. He’s one of the most despicable humans ever – right up there with Stalin and Hitler.
Al Gore on the Supreme Court would pretty much spell the end of hope for a free humanity.
Forgot to mention that Algore stands to become a billionaire from the gullible buying his carbon credits. That’s an awful lot of money to give up to sit on the Court. I don’t think he’d want to.
He also invented the internet.
Don’t forget the integrity he showed in 2000, trying illegal recount after illegal recount in an attempt to steal the Presidency.
To be fair though, we do all have to thank him for the Internet.
That picture made me think of the last chapter of ‘Animal Farm’ where the pigs turn into humans. It seems to be happening the other way round with Al, at least physically.
Yes, why not. The US is already the laughing stock of the world. Let’s get Al in there and make a mockery of the Constitution.
#5 I think you have him confused with the Bush team. Its just a pity he didn’t try a bit harder, then the world would have been spared 8 years of the mentally unbalanced Bush, his idiocy and the ruin of the US economy.
The ruin in terms of the billions wasted in Iraq I mean, no government would have reigned in the corrupt bastards running Wall Street.
In reality, I’d look for one of the Clintons to try to worm they’re way into this. It doesn’t look like they have any chance at a UN spot and they haven’t convened the NAU yet.
It’ll probably be someone more ideologically sound in the end, someone political like the Clintons or Gore might switch sides depending on how their interest sit.
Whatever……….

#8 – no confusion – we are a nations of laws and the law won out in the end.
Al’s the one who’s working hard to ruin the economy and the quality of life of everyone on the planet but himself.
@atthetrough
Funny you should mention pigs. Al Gore also warned us about ManBearPig.
#8 Before you shoot you mouth off again about the 2000 election, you should do some research about it. The unofficial recount under Florida Supreme Court guidlines (The one Gore’s team wanted) after the fact, still had Bush ahead. SO GET OVER IT!!!
It would be interesting if Obama did nominate Gore. Interesting in the sense of which would happen the quickest, impeachment or a recall.
I seriously doubt the current administration would be so stupid. Although, it was a Democrat (Harry Reid), that recommended Harriot Miers to Bush in 2005.
While AL Whore didn’t invent the internet (that claim has been quite exaggerated and taken out of context by the right)I would love for Buttcrack Obama to nominate him. It would just further expose how out of touch and radical Darth Obama is. It would be worse than when Bush nominated Harriet Miers.
My guess is Obama will nominate a lesbian female judge.
How would Gore be any worse a fantasy choice than Harriet Miers was as a real choice?
Bobby Brown, former husband of Whitney Houston, would make a fantastic choice for the Supreme Court.
He has lots and lots of experience with legal matters (spousal abuse, battery, parole violations, drunk driving convictions).
He is just the type of individual Obama is looking for. Someone who has “empathy, of understanding and identifying with people’s hopes and struggles as an essential ingredient” and has been “down for the struggle”.
More importantly, he is black – a perfect solution to address the belief held by Obama’s Attorney General: “…in things racial we have always been and continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards.” — Eric Holder
Like the other Obama appointees, (Biden, Geithner, Napolitano, Rattner, Polakoff, Killefer, Daschle, Richardson) Brown is a total loser and will feel right at home.
The headline was inaccurate. It needlessly scared people. I wondered why it was so cold down here in hell.
Fred Gwinn did a great job as a judge in My Cousin Vinnie. Who wouldn’t love to hear a supreme court justice ask “Are you mockin’ me with that suit?”
I’d also be happy with the James Spader character on Boston Legal.
Do we really have to pick actual human beings?
We could try a constitutional law scholar. Someone who has been studying and enforcing the constitution for a generation.
How about Susan Herman?
Oh well, it was just a thought. I don’t really follow the careers of judges, so have no more realist (i.e. political) suggestions.
hehehe…Harriet Miers. There’s a blast from the past.
Does The Righteous Right hate everyone…excluding Fox commentators?
Toxic needs to lay off the crazy pills. Stalin. Hitler. Puh-leez.
I think Al Gore would make an excellent choice as a Supreme Court Justice.
As a member of the court he would be obligated to STFU about global warming and restrict his opinions to the legal cases brought before him.
And, best of all, he would probably have to recuse himself from any environmental cases due to conflict of interest!!
Oh my, all the angry conservatives here. You know you’re fucked. Obama will appoint at least two if not three contemporary thinkers to the bench.
They will go against Christian Taliban appointee John Roberts and that fat black guy who exposed himself to Anita Hill and performed the wedding ceremony for Rush Limbaugh.
Delightful.
#11 – Toxic Asshead,
#8 – no confusion – we are a nations of laws and the law won out in the end.
Interesting definition of the law you’ve got there. His brother rigs the election and the 5 judges that his daddy and Reagan elected declare W the president. It’s called a coup.
#13 – BigBoyBC,
#8 Before you shoot you mouth off again about the 2000 election, you should do some research about it. The unofficial recount under Florida Supreme Court guidlines (The one Gore’s team wanted) after the fact, still had Bush ahead. SO GET OVER IT!!!
Did that include the -16,000 votes from Volusia County?
I’m not of the right.. I just remember the hype about him “inventing” the internet long ago, way back in the 90’s. Most people with a rudiment of reasoning (this obviously excludes Sean Hannity et al) consider this a joke.
#19…. sorry, Fred Gwinn is dead.
#25 – Alfred1,
Most Liberals and Statists don’t realize how dependent their freedoms are on the meaning of words.
When they clamor for a politically correct Judge who will interpret words to fit Liberal or Statist ideals.
The founders were quite Libertarian and adamantly anti-religion. I’m a liberal myself, but would be a lot happier with an interpretation as the framers meant the constitution than one that allows such horrors as torture and federally funded religious discrimination.
#25, Ayatollah,
Many wonder why the Bible is so differently interpreted…
Nope, because god couldn’t get the translations right. So, according to Ayatollah1, god lied to us about the bible being god’s word. He doesn’t mean what the bible says.
If god wanted us to know what he wanted he wouldn’t have used dead languages with unsure meanings and depended upon sociopaths to interpret it for us.
Good God what a bad idea. You can’t make someone a Supreme Court Justice because it would be cool. I don’t know, maybe being a Lawyer and Judge is a good place to start!?! Being a justice means interpreting and applying laws, regardless to how you feel. We need to get back to the idea that “Justice is Blind”, and that everyone is equal under the law.
