Whoops! PR disaster ahoy!

  1. Mark T. says:

Easy solution. Switch the camera to “inverted image”.

  2. John E. Quantum says:

You all got it wrong. The camera in the video was set on “fugly”.

  3. Mark T. says:

    Quantum, FTW!

  4. bob says:

    #25 Boyd FTW

  5. HMM2 says:

This was an episode of “Better off Ted”

  6. deowll says:

Why be surprised? HP is known for good hardware and software written by half trained monkeys.

  7. new to this site says:

The video is a fake. They’ve set it up using a mirror – everything is reverse image. Their name tags are on the wrong side of their shirts, their names are spelled backwards (ie mirror). The large product name in the background, KIPOR, is reverse image. Nice try, but obviously the tracking doesn’t work when using a mirror.

    [Well spotted, sir – ed.]

  8. Relik says:

For all you people who can’t understand why it’s mirror image : The software is mirroring the image so people don’t freak out.

If it was not mirrored and it was showing the video live on the screen, when the user went to the left of the computer, they would appear to go to the right on the screen. Think about it.

The camera is facing you and you are facing it, therefore left and right are reversed. If you were to show just that video, the directions would still be reversed. So, you have to mirror it to make it “comfortable” to the user.

#38 mirroring has absolutely nothing to do with why it isn’t tracking him.

[Good point. I never use the cam on my notebook and have never noticed before – ed.]

  9. JJ says:

#38 and Editor — Then why does it track the woman?

    Brainfart!

  10. JSUNBurns says:

Maybe the camera just can’t see men. There are way too many variables here. One test subject was a man and the other a woman. How much do the test subjects weigh? What is their sexual orientation? Why do we always need to blame everything on race?

By the way… I’m only kidding of course!

“The short movie, uploaded earlier this month, features “Black Desi” and his colleague “White Wanda”.” http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8429634.stm

  11. JSUNBurns says:

Dark skin just doesn’t reflect light well.

Surprise, surprise. Blame it on HP.

  12. swingarino says:

Do not understimate the forces that knocked off JFK!!

  13. bsj2312 says:

Since Dvorak is a trusted columnist, I came to this site thinking I would gleam some kind of insight into this phenomenon. Instead, I am bombarded with hateful racial, nay RACIST, stereotypes. I can say with certainty, this is the first and last time I will be visiting this website and I will most certainly be skipping Dvorak’s column’s in print as well. What exactly is your “comment moderation” used for?
