1. Gregg says:

What tv show is this from?

[Ed. – It appears to have been from the 2010 edition of this: Austin City Limits Festival]

  2. Floyd says:

    Austin City Limits, I’ll guess.

  3. jbenson2 says:

Steve Martin is such a has-been.

  4. chuck says:

Steve Martin demonstrates exactly why atheists have no songs.

  5. bobbo, the evangelical anti-theist says:

It was on ACL a week ago. A little humor and Steve playing the only Banjo and playing it well. I saw him in Reno when he first started and he played a short rift on the banjo before putting the arrow thru his head.

    Musician
    Playwrite
    Screen Writer
    Actor
    Comedian

King Tut–still one of my favorites combining all these? If you could have all of one persons oeuvre, would it be Martin or Allen? I think I’d go with Martin only because too much of Woody is the same. Or not. I’d be happy either way.

  6. jbenson2 says:

His claim to fame was King Tut, Excuse Meeeee, Arrow in Head, Wild and Crazy Guy. They were all back in the late 1970’s – that’s over 3 decades ago. He also did a few movies in the 80’s.

  7. foobar says:

That’s pretty cute. Steve’s been mainly writing and doing music for the last 10 years – hence the grammy award last year and the top 10 in books and mags lists. He does about a movie a year and they make pretty good money. He’s pulling his weight.

Lighten up guys, he’s in his 60’s and having fun. His life doesn’t revolve around a TV like yours. Maybe you should get a life.

  8. Lou says:

#6 – “He also did a few movies in the 80′s.”

Perhaps you should go take a look at his IMDB page as he’s done a LOT more than “a few movies in the 80’s”

A lot of hate for Steve Martin – pretty surprising. The guy is talented all the way around – an incredible banjo player, a comedian, actor, writer..

Is it because of the “athiest” angle? If so, wow, get over it.

  9. akallio says:

Strange coincidence, but I was thinking up some alternate lyrics to “Go Tell It On The Mountain” last night while trying to fall asleep, but the Submit button says “Moderation Is Active” so I won’t repeat it here.

  10. Thinker says:

Very funny, very true… 🙂 Steve Martin is one talented guy indeed.

  11. spsffan says:

    Q. Why should you take an instant dislike to a banjo player?

    A. Saves time.

Now then, I don’t really dislike Steve Martin. I just never found him very funny. Mildly amusing at best. But he does have a good point about atheist and culture. Of course, that’s the whole raison d’etre of the Unitarians. You get to sing, socialize, etc. without all that idiotic god talk. Works pretty well for a lot of agnostic/atheist former Catholics and Jews.

  12. jbenson2 says:

A lot of hate for Steve Martin? Calling a has-been a has-been is now considered hate? We have a few overly-sensitive folks on this site.

He is former comedian whose time has come and gone.

An incredible banjo player? – so were the rednecks in Deliverance.

  13. bobbo, the evangelical anti-theist says:

JB–its just too perfect: “Better a has been than a never was.”

He started with standup, went to movies, now writing and music. I think thats called progression and development.

    Robin Williams–repeats. Woody Allan–repeats.

No, I think we gotta give Steve his due.

Did we mention dancer and book author?

His life/interests/ability/insights==THATS what I’m jealous of.

If I could have dinner with any three people living or dead I would choose: Steve Martin, Jebus, and an Honest Politician===dinner for two.

  14. jbenson2 says:

Bobbo wrote: JB–its just too perfect: “Better a has been than a never was.”

I don’t have a problem with him being a 65 year old has-been. He was very funny in his day. I think he has lost the formula and doesn’t have much left to add.

Now take someone like Victor Borge – he was entertaining right up to his final days.

  15. Lou says:

#12 – Martin is FAR from a “has-been” Perhaps you should do some research, because you’re as far off base as you possibly could be.

  16. Cursor_ says:

Sadly there was an error in the lyrics.

Atheists don’t even have rock n roll.

    Cursor_

  17. Don, the wacky Christian says:

I am probably the worst case scenario Christian for this blog. But I have always loved and admired Steve Martin. Met him in the late 70s, just as he was hitting his stride. Very funny, talented man, and he’s having a great time with the talent God gave him. I hope he knows the Lord, cuz the Lord sure knows him…

  18. Yankinwaoz says:

Steve wrote and starred in “The Jerk”. That one film justifies anything crap he might have produced for the rest of his career. I do love that film.

    “I was born a poor black child…”

  19. foobar says:

Don, you should change your name to the “Zany Christian” or maybe “Madcap Believer”.

  20. Glenn E. says:

Saw this on PBS one night. Loved the idea of the song. But thought there was too much repetition in it. The repeat chorus was too long, compared to the other verses. Over all. Just not worded as funny as it could have been. The King Tut song was funnier.

I’m thinking Atheists have no song, because Atheists have no soul. And you need soul to write a decent song.

  21. Brian says:

I’m sorry but i never understood why people think this guy is funny.

  22. Dale says:

I just ordered his 2009 Grammy winner: The Crow. He’s entertained the shit out of me for decades..still does.
