NEW TAIPEI, Taiwan – A Taiwanese man who died while playing video games at an internet cafe appeared to have gone unnoticed by fellow gamers for up to nine hours, police said Friday. The 23-year-old checked in at the cafe in New Taipei city on Tuesday night and was found dead but still sitting rigidly on a chair with his hands stretched out the following night by a waitress, police said.

The waitress last saw him talking on the phone around noon on Wednesday and his body had apparently been sitting there for up to nine hours without any of the 30 other people in the cafe noticing. An initial police investigation found he might have died of a cardiac arrest triggered by low temperatures.

I assume they finally noticed when the man became unusually gamey….

    Should’ve used the Konami Code.

  4. jescott418 says:

Talk about poor service. So it was nine hours before a waitress even approached the man? He probably died of starvation.

  5. MartinJJ says:

Games these days become so real, now the second person nails the first person.

A 23 year old guy dying from cardiac arrest because of the cold in an internetcafe? Yeah, right! They are probably going to use this story to tell kids how bad gaming is.

    What no re-spawn?

    Pffft… n00b.

  8. scandihoovian says:

Looks like he was forgotten by society a bit too soon. Housekeeping!

  9. Checkmate says:

He was playing 3-D chess over a 9.6K baud modem.

  10. xjonx says:

Why is anyone surprised? This seems to happen at least ONCE PER YEARS, usually in S. Korea.

  11. msbpodcast says:

Didn’t anybody notice that the machine kept winning all the time?

  12. HUGSaLOT says:

yeah hard core Starcraft players from South Korea die off like this all the time. Still I wanna know what this guy was playing. Probably Farmville?

  13. HUGSaLOT says:

Is it just me or does this site no longer link back to the original source story anymore?

    • Dr Spearmint Fur says:

You need to click hyperlink thingie in your Internet browser (e.g. Mosaic) when you’re using the information superhighway.

  14. Animby says:

Gee, I’ve been to New Tapei and don’t recall it getting it very cold. Certainly not cold enough to cause a cardiac arrest.

Hey! Now I got it. Did the Russians take any video games with them???

Heartless commentary. This is a human being we’re talking about here.

    • BigBoyBC says:

No he wasn’t, he was a gammer.

    • msbpodcast says:

Hey, it was a particularly stupid place to die engaging in a particularly stupid activity.

We’re making fun of it because we recognize that it might happen to us too.

  17. deowll says:

What I noticed is that it was a waitress that noticed a client wasn’t moving rather than a patron setting near him.

You do not intrude on a gamer while gaming at least not after the first time. They aren’t happy if you do.

LA county worker found dead at desk — one day later

Rebecca Wells, 51, was found slumped over her desk in the county Department of Internal Services in Downey by a security guard.
The exact time of death is not clear, but detectives say that, at worst, Wells had been dead for a day before her body was discovered.

  19. blatherer says:

He was noticed after his time ran out and he didn’t pay for more.

The place smelled so bad, a dead body would make no difference for at least a week.
