The first electronics project I built when I was about 11 was a theremin from Southwest Technical Products.

When I was in about the 8th grade, my parents signed me up for their series of 8 science kits. What fun! I built a 3-tube superregenerative radio receiver that could pick up WGN Chicago, New Orleans and WHO Des Moines. This was so long ago, the kit used those big old octal tubes. I was envious of the kids who got the very next year’s kits — they had the newer, smaller 7- and 9-pin tubes!
It’s odd, though; this would have been around 1959-1960, but the Wikipedia article on SWTPC says the company started in 1964, and even had a different name then.
