I’d always thought it meant some common issues that ‘bring both sides of the isle together’ but Here, it is probably being used to describe vested interestes of different ideologies wherein IT as a whole is the ‘party’ — coming together on the stuff they think they can agree on.
The reality is that *The Big Tent* is where they hold the dog&pony show and hand out the free individually-inspected USDA hot dogs where everyone goes home afterwards with blueballs and listeria. Pity, that; As a proper test of acidity may have easily revealed the incredibly high density of bullshit in those tasty, red bung-bags.
