“We Approve!”

(KMOV)- A St. Louis man who was jailed and charged with making a threat about a shoe bomb was released Tuesday. Michael Shafermeyer, 30, was arrested Saturday boarding a flight at Lambert Airport Saturday. After spending 3 ½ days in jail, he spoke with News 4 to give his side of the story. Shafermeyer said he was flying to Maryland to get married and because he was anxious about the wedding and nervous about flying, he had a few drinks before getting to the airport.

His friends describe him as a guy with a non-stop, quirky sense of humor. When a flight attendant asked him to close his laptop after boarding, Shafermeyer says he was just trying to make a joke when he asked her, “Are you the one who checks for shoe bombs?” He said within minutes federal agents whisked him off the plane and he spent the next 2 ½ days in solitary confinement at the St. Louis County Jail. The final day in jail, he was put in general holding with 20-30 other people, who he said stood and gave him a standing ovation when he first walked into the room. Shafermeyer said he’s charged with making a false bomb report. He still plans to go to Maryland to get married, but will take the train to get there.

NEW YORK: Vacancy rates in office buildings exceed 10 percent in virtually every major city across the United States and are rising rapidly, a sign of economic distress that could lead to yet another wave of problems for the beleaguered financial sector. With job cuts rampant and businesses retrenching, more empty space is expected from New York to Chicago to Los Angeles in the coming year. Rental income would then decline and property values would slide further. The Urban Land Institute predicts 2009 will be the worst year for the U.S. commercial real estate market “since the wrenching 1991-1992 industry depression.”mrbubble

Stock analysts say commercial real estate is the next ticking time bomb for banks, which have already received hundreds of billions of dollars in capital and other assistance from the U.S. government. Big banks – like Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley – each hold tens of billions of dollars in commercial real estate bonds, which were sliced and diced into securities. The banks also invested directly in properties. Jeffrey DeBoer, chief executive of the Real Estate Roundtable, a lobbying group in Washington, is asking for government assistance for his industry and warns of the potential impact of defaults. “Each one by itself is not significant,” he said, “but the cumulative effect will put tremendous stress on the financial sector.”

Anyone notice the strip malls starting to resemble ghost towns?

“Now with more Pesticides!”

Fizzy drinks sold by Coca-Cola in Britain have been found to contain pesticides at up to 300 times the level allowed in tap or bottled water. A worldwide study found pesticide levels in orange and lemon drinks sold under the Fanta brand, which is popular with children, were at their highest in the UK. The research team called on the Government, the industry and the company to act to remove the chemicals and called for new safety standards to regulate the soft drinks market.

The industry denies children are at risk and insists that the levels found by researchers based at the University of Jaen in southern Spain are not harmful. The researchers tested 102 cans and bottles of soft drinks, bought from 15 countries, for the presence of 100 pesticides. The UK products were bought in London, Cambridge, Edinburgh, St Andrews and at Gatwick Airport.

The experts said the levels found were low under the maximum residue levels allowed for fruit, but they were ‘very high’ and ‘up to 300 times’ the figure permitted for bottled or tap water.

The chemicals detected included carbendazim, thiabendazole, imazalil, prochloraz, malathion and iprodione. They are mainly applied to fruit after harvest to stop it developing fungal infections and rotting.

A total of 19 products were bought in the UK, all made by Coca-Cola.

You gotta love the Brits they’ll put up with anything, stiff upper lip and all that.

Must now wear new “tested for lead” clothes from Macy’s

This is the most idiotic thing ever to come down the George Bush Pike. Only Walmart, Target and other big stores selling new products can afford this legislation. No mother will be able to buy used clothing for their children or a used children’s book. Technically this mean garage sales will not legally be able to sell these items either. Also the same goes for the Salvation Army stores and Goodwill. Unbelievable. And, note, China has not been shipping clothes with lead in the fabric. It was always about lead paint. How did this legislation come about then? Let’s track it down and I suspect a corrupt politician is behind it.

This legislation also applies to hand-made one-of-a-kind knit clothing. Screw all those grannies in New England who knit mittens.

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, passed by Congress in August, goes into effect February 10. Among other things, it mandates all childrens’ products, toys, clothes, books, etc. are tested for toxic lead and phthalates, chemicals used in plastic. Store owners must present a certificate proving the products were tested.

Many small business owners say they can’t afford the testing and will have no choice but to get rid of much of their inventory.

“The cost of digestive testing for lead ranges from $130 to $180 per test on a shirt I am selling for $4.95,” said Gulij.

In 90s, Burris Sought Death Penalty for Innocent Man – ProPublica — This story may be the real reason the Dems do not want to seat this creep.

While state attorney general in 1992, Burris aggressively sought the death penalty for Rolando Cruz, who twice was convicted of raping and murdering a 10-year-old girl in the Chicago suburb of Naperville. The crime took place in 1983.

But by 1992, another man had confessed [2] to the crime, and Burris’ own assistant attorney general was pleading with Burris to drop the case, then on appeal before the Illinois Supreme Court. Burris refused. He was running for governor.

“Anybody who understood this case wouldn’t have voted for Burris,” Rob Warden, executive director of the Center on Wrongful Convictions, told ProPublica. Indeed, Burris lost that race, and two other attempts to become governor.

Burris’ role in the Cruz case was “indefensible and in defiance of common sense and common decency,” Warden said. “There was obvious evidence that [Cruz] was innocent.” Assistant attorney general Mary Brigid Kenney agreed, and eventually resigned [3] rather than continue to prosecute Cruz.

Once Burris assigned Kenney to the case in 1991, she became convinced that Cruz was innocent, a victim of what she believed was prosecutorial misconduct. She sent Burris a memo reporting that the jury convicted Cruz without knowing that Brian Dugan, a repeat sex offender and murderer, had confessed to the crime. Burris never met with Kenney to discuss a new trial for Cruz, Kenney told ProPublica.

A statue of the crucifixion has been taken down from its perch on a church in Sussex because it was scaring local children and deterring worshippers, a vicar admitted today.

The Rev Ewen Souter, the vicar at St John’s Church in Horsham, West Sussex, ordered the removal of the 10-foot sculpture of Jesus on the cross just before Christmas, branding it “unsuitable” and “a horrifying depiction of pain and suffering”.

The 10ft resin sculpture, by Edward Bainbridge Copnall, a former president of the Royal Society of British Sculptors, will be replaced by a more “uplifting” stainless steel cross – to the dismay of more traditional parishioners.

Souter, formerly a cell biologist, said: “The crucifix expressed suffering, torment, pain and anguish. It was a scary image, particularly for children. Parents didn’t want to walk past it with their kids, because they found it so horrifying

A long-standing member of the church, who asked not to be named, said: “The crucifix is the oldest and most famous symbol of the Christian church. Pulling it down and putting up something that would look more at home on the side of a flashy modern shopping centre is not the way to get more bums on seats.

“Next they’ll be ripping out the pews and putting sofas in their place, or throwing out all the Bibles and replacing them with laptops. It’s just not right.”

Tee hee.

(try not to scratch…try not to scratch…)

The new blue uniforms issued to Transportation Security Administration officers at hundreds of airports nationwide may have a snazzy look, but they have become a major irritant for some of those employees.

The new uniforms are causing rashes and other irritations among transportation security officers who screen passengers at airports, according to the union representing the workers.

“We’re hearing from hundreds of TSOs that this is an issue,” said Emily Ryan, a spokeswoman for the American Federation of Government Employees. Most of the complaints have been for skin rashes, but they have also included runny or bloody noses, lightheadeness, red eyes, and swollen and cracked lips, union officials say.

The union blames formaldehyde, which is a chemical byproduct of the permanent-press finish applied by clothing manufacturers to prevent mildew and stains.

So, now, you not only get to deal with ignorance and foolishness, you might be questioned by someone with a rash on their crotch, as well. Cripes!

Feds start wait list for DTV converter box coupons | KOMO News — This is going to be a fiasco, you can see it coming down Broadway.

Consumers who apply for federal coupons to pay for converter boxes ahead of next month’s transition to digital television broadcasts are being placed on a waiting list and may not receive their vouchers before the switchover, the Commerce Department said Monday.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration, the arm of the Commerce Department administering the coupon program, created the waiting list on Sunday after hitting a $1.34 billion funding limit set by Congress.

The agency will send out coupons to those on the list only as unredeemed coupons currently in circulation expire, freeing up more money for the program. The waiting list already has requests for 103,000 coupons.

The Church of England has published a prayer to help comfort Britons who lose their jobs in the financial crisis.

“Hear me as I cry out in confusion, help me to think clearly, and calm my soul,” says the “Prayer On Being Made Redundant.”

The church, part of the global Anglican church, also offered a prayer for those who keep their jobs but suffer stress and feelings of guilt when colleagues are fired.

“Who will be next? How will I cope with the increased pressure of work?” asks the “Prayer For Those Remaining In The Workplace.”

As many as 600,000 Britons could lose their jobs this year, a report from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development forecast last month.

I remarked the other day about too much tea softening your brain. Too much religion flushes intelligence from your brain altogether.

Adam Herrman in 1999

Authorities in Kansas are looking for a boy who disappeared about a decade ago, but was not reported missing until a few weeks ago.

“We don’t know what happened to Adam Herrman past ‘99, when he was last seen,” Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy said at a news conference in El Dorado. “Is he alive, is he dead? That one I can’t answer because we don’t know,” he added.

Adam was 11 or 12 when he was last seen, Murphy said. At the time, he was living in a mobile home park in Towanda, a small town in southern Kansas, with his adoptive parents, Doug and Valerie Herrman. The couple did not report him missing, Murphy said.

A few weeks ago, a person notified Sedgwick County Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit of a “concern” regarding Adam, Murphy said…

“They feel very guilty” about not doing that, he said in a telephone interview. The couple told him the boy had run away frequently, he said, and they believed him to be either with his biological parents or homeless.

Although the Herrmans did not report him missing, “they were very worried about him,” he said.

Well, that’s good enough, I guess. For some.

German Billionaire Merckle Commits Suicide – WSJ.com — Did he leave a suicide note? None is mentioned. The fact that he was in the cement business gives me pause as to what really happened. Not that I want to stereotype anyone.

The family of Adolf Merckle said the German billionaire committed suicide after his business empire got into trouble because of the global financial crisis.

A brief family statement Tuesday did not give details on the circumstances of the 74-year-old investor’s death. It said the problems his holdings suffered due to the financial crisis “broke” him and “he ended his life.”

Cruelly forced to do housework in a stereotypical manner
for a gang of different sized persons

For most, they are innocent tales that define childhood.

But some parents are ditching fairytales, believing they are politically incorrect or ‘too dark’ to read to children, a survey has found.

One in four mothers has abandoned the likes of Cinderella and Rapunzel in favour of The Gruffalo or The Very Hungry Caterpillar, written in 1969 by Eric Carle.

One in ten parents even said Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs should be re-titled – because ‘the dwarf reference is not PC’.

Rapunzel is considered ‘too dark’ and Cinderella outdated, because she is forced to do the housework.
[…]
A fifth of parents said fairytales were no longer politically correct, while 17 per cent worried they would give their children nightmares.

Instead, let’s tell a story about two gay daddies who have thrown off the shackles of male-dominated Western religion to raise their boy (adopted from a crack whore, ooops, cocaine enabled service provider) and girl (artificial insemination) to fight inequality wherever it appears. Now, don’t you feel enlightened?

Donors to President George W. Bush’s presidential library probably will remain a mystery, said the foundation overseeing fundraising.

Mark Langdale, who heads the George W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation, said that’s the way some donors want it. “It’s our decision not to disclose who the donors are,” he said.

The foundation will oversee construction of the library, museum and public policy institute at the Southern Methodist University campus in Dallas. The group had raised less than $3 million when the latest tax reports were filed in August. That’s far short of its $300 million goal, but foundation officials said fundraising will pick up significantly after Bush leaves office Jan. 20.

Bush officials have said the president would not accept foreign donations while in office. Both Clinton and Bush’s father had the same policy but accepted large gifts from foreigners after leaving the White House…

“Clearly, we’re in tough economic headwinds, so it’s going to be a harder climb than it would have been a year ago,” Langdale said.

But he said the foundation expects to meet its fundraising goal by autumn of 2010, the planned groundbreaking date.

Cripes. I think almost anyone would be embarrassed to have it known they kicked in for Bush’s library.
