Discover — It’s not that she says the Earth is 6000 years old — twice, just to make sure — that floors me. It’s the casual way she said it, as if she said “I had a cup of coffee today.” From her manner, it’s clear that not only does she believe this complete and utter nonsense, but this is a simple fact woven into her mind just like the Sun is bright or chocolate is tasty.
To her, the Earth being 6000 years old just is.
Now, to be fair, this video is without context, and so we can’t be absolutely sure she’s a creationist. But it sure as heck sounds that way, and given her voting record it fits right in.
The irony, of course — and there’s always irony when creationism is involved — is that she’s talking about uranium mining, and it’s through the radioactive decay of uranium that we know the Earth is billions of years old. And she also praises technological achievements!
AIIIIiiiiieeee!
I know, nothing new here, but I still get a kick out of hearing them say it!

#5:
Read the Bible, do the math. If the planet is only 6000 years old, then it came into being more than 1500 years after the big flood occurred. Even a creationist can’t argue against that that without looking completely stupid.
I’m paraphrasing Arthur C Clark, but any religion that visualizes God in his own image is going to have problems.
Believe me Sen. Sylvia Allen is not the only ignorant person in the state legislature. We have quite a few.
36,
just to add to the comment..
SHOULDNT sheep be behind the pack, and not leading the dogs.
i don’t get this article. it knows her voting record yet doesnt know the context of this clip?
adamlepp – you are wrong and repeating this lie does not make it true. there is NO evidence to support it. there are NO credible scientists who back it. it is just creationist bible bulls%!t. come out of the ether.
Religion is the only superstition an University degree won’t get rid off.
she is way over-estimating the age of the Earth. My religion states that the Earth is only 8 seconds old. Everything before comment 39 was put there by God to confuse the hell out of people who believe in “evidence”. Now prove I’m wrong adamlepp.
The Fall of the House of Ussher

How someone that loony can make their way to being a state senator of Arizona is astonishing.
I can see Alaska, but Arizona? Their needs to be certain amount of IQ to be a government representative, IMHO.
Re: #22 adamlepp said, “I’ve read up on these issues (books, publications, and of course online). Everybody is right and everybody can prove they are right.”
Wrong. Creationists can’t prove anything. Scientists, however, have long since debunked the junk science of your post #11. If you have ever challenged the validity of those statements (as you claim) you would know that. You have been deceived into believing that Creationism is a valid as science. Religion invented deception.
Can someone please, PLEASE help me choose the true religion to believe? There are SO MANY to choose from, I just don’t know what to do.. I mean, look at this list:
http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/names/gods.htm
It’s obvious, that science, with it’s beliefs in facts and research and all that jazz just can’t compete with the list above…
I’m leaning to ancient Roman / Greek Gods, since they have the best stories…
Any other suggestions?
Oh goodie some one still in office to tick up that Palin torch and run with it. And in Arizona no less, how did McCain miss this gem right in his own backyard.
#43 – Then how do you explain Barney Frank, Harry Reid, Pelosi, Biden, Obama, Boxer and Franken among many others?
They can come mine uranium in my back yard if they want. I’d love it if they were digging right between the coal mine, wind tower and oil pump. We need more power any way we can get it. More power Scotty!

“And the “great” flood, what a load of crap that was.”
When your whole “world” is probably the size of a small state, a great flood should be the size of a city…

All you crazy, wacked out, Liberal, statist, atheist, commie, Omama supporting traitors are going to hell. … The Bible doesn’t lie because God said in the Bible he doesn’t lie. … Hemorrhoids can be a pain in the butt, but so can your Priest and Larry Craig. … God is a quick worker, he only needed six days to create everything. He didn’t need to create the earth millions of years ago when he could do this only a few years ago. … I hope you perverts enjoy your AC and fancy cars now, when you spend eternity fueling the fires of hell you won’t be so comfortable. … Why do I use these three periods instead of just starting a new paragraph? … Why did my mommy hate me? … Why were there so many daddys when I was little and why did they always leave? … Why did my real daddy leave mommy before I was born? … Why did the people on the carnival always laugh when they opened the curtain? … My gun is bigger than your gun.

“If you live in America, the chances are good that your next door neighbours believe the following: the Inventor of the laws of physics and Programmer of the DNA code decided to enter the uterus of a Jewish virgin, got himself born, then deliberately had himself tortured and executed because he couldn’t think of a better way to forgive the theft of an apple, committed at the instigation of a talking snake. As Creator of the majestically expanding universe, he not only understands relativistic gravity and quantum mechanics but actually designed them. Yet what he really cares about is ‘sin,’ abortion, how often you go to church, and whether gay people should marry. Statistically, the chances are that your neighbours believe all that – and they can vote.
In other parts of the world, there is a good chance that your neighbours believe you should be beheaded if you draw a cartoon of a desert warlord who copulated with a child and flew into the sky on a winged horse. In other places, there’s a good chance that your neighbours think their wishes will be granted if they pray to a human figure with an elephant’s trunk.
Even if your neighbours don’t hold any of those mutually contradictory beliefs, they probably take it for granted that we should unquestioningly respect those who do. And the huge majority of American and British newspapers and periodicals go along with this abject kow-towing to what their educated editorial staff must know, in their heart of hearts, is nonsense.” – Richard Dawkins
39 and 41. As I’ve stated before, I’m not trying to prove anything. I’m also not one of these religious fanatics I think you think I am. Do I have some “religious” belief planted in me, sure we all do. In fact, I tend to get just as pissed off at religion as you do. I do seek to find out what is reality and what is lies though. That is what science is (from my understanding), to seek what is and what isn’t.
Is the Earth only 6,000 years old, I don’t know. Is it 6.5 billion years old, maybe. Who knows. From what I’ve read, heard, and seen, there isn’t enough evidence to really prove anything. Only theories, as mentioned elsewhere in this discussion.
For those telling me that there aren’t scientists out there with evidence suggesting a young Earth possibility (other than religions creationist), do your own research. Sure, it might be less than a few percent, but they are there.
Also, a young Earth does not imply creationism, nor does an old Earth imply the opposite of that.
#53 – the same chain of sciences that say the Earth is billions of years old also predict things that can be verified by experiment.
Religion based “science” can sound convincing but it only explains things after the fact.
I am a creationist (of course the Earth was created), but how old it is I don’t have a clue. I believe the universe is about 15 billion years old. I do believe the Grand Canyon was created primarily by the flood of Noah. I believe the reason people lived hundreds and hundreds of years before the flood was because a water canopy encompassed the Earth, creating a greenhouse effect, limiting the harmful rays of the sun. And it created a much more balanced eco system that produced very nutritious and healthy food. I believe their were no major oceans like today before the flood. I know PC science often tries to ignore evidence of God, because they never talk about the flood of Noah, the most important geological event in the last six thousand years. Instead, they come with all kinds of preposterous unproven theories to ignore it. That’s why their is so much junk science today, especially when it comes to climate change.
I believe the only way we are really going to ever have the exact right answer to all these questions is when man is restored to his eternal state, and we have access to all the heavenly records. And I believe that only comes through faith in God, and the sacrifice his Son Jesus Christ made at Calvary.
I won’t argue or debate this because your entitled to your beliefs as much as I am mine. But if you want a whole different prospective on science by a number of PhD’s from a Biblical perspective, I suggest you check out this site:
http://www.reasons.org/
The important thing for us not to lose sight of is that we agree on “who” Created, and that it is not so important as to when, or how long Creation took. No one disputes God took time with His Creation (he could have made all in an instant) we are just arguing about “how long.” Time, day and night are all relative. Einstein has proven that time itself is dependent on your motion and proximity to a large gravity source. God is outside of time. Time is a dimension of our universe. Time (not our concept of it anyway) did not exist prior to Creation. It is nothing more than a measure of “rate” related to “speed” while traveling. So for us to impose our puny little time scales on him is in some respects ridiculous.
Sylvia was voted in by the majority of the people in her district. The people on this blog would be a distinct minority there. Your displays of contempt & ridicule wouldn’t work there.
The ACLU hasn’t sent in one of their hit squads to try to sue her out of office. The national news media haven’t focused their ridicule on her yet.
Sylvia’s harmless. She isn’t trying to dictate her morality and conduct on others — unlike the leftists in government.
#57 Sylvia’s harmless.
Harmless? A leader of the state, someone young people should look up to, is this stupid? You call that harmless?
Maybe some civilized part of the world should send missionaries to the US to educate the people about reality. They are a laughingstock of the world. A laughingstock with the world’s most powerful military. Scary.
As the Texans used to say, if you took all the idiots out of the legislature, it wouldn’t be a representative body…. *rimshot*
I myself am a believer in LastWednesdayism. We believe God created the world last Wednesday, complete with fake memories of non-existent events from before last Wednesday. This is obviously true… prove me wrong! 😉
#59, Phydeau,
prove me wrong!
Easy. Because I am a member (in good standing) of the Church of LastTuesdayism. And we know that what happened last Wednesday actually happened. Monday is fake.
😛
55 RS,
What about the tale of Gilgamesh?
My friend advised me to take a Grand Canyon bus tour through the winding canyon roads or one of the wonderfully rustic Grand Canyon mule tours down some of the best hiking and riding trails in the Southwestern US for a meaningful weekend.
