Discover — It’s not that she says the Earth is 6000 years old — twice, just to make sure — that floors me. It’s the casual way she said it, as if she said “I had a cup of coffee today.” From her manner, it’s clear that not only does she believe this complete and utter nonsense, but this is a simple fact woven into her mind just like the Sun is bright or chocolate is tasty.
To her, the Earth being 6000 years old just is.
Now, to be fair, this video is without context, and so we can’t be absolutely sure she’s a creationist. But it sure as heck sounds that way, and given her voting record it fits right in.
The irony, of course — and there’s always irony when creationism is involved — is that she’s talking about uranium mining, and it’s through the radioactive decay of uranium that we know the Earth is billions of years old. And she also praises technological achievements!
AIIIIiiiiieeee!
I know, nothing new here, but I still get a kick out of hearing them say it!

they are talking about mining Uranium.
THAT in 6000 years that MANKIND hasnt killed this planet and in the near future we wont kill it either.
I dont think she gets the idea that 6000 years ago, the population of the ENTIRE WORLD was in the millions, NOT BILLIONS, as it is today.
That the population in the last 150 years has risen SO FAST, as the medical community has developed Many cures for the things that kill us.
Arizona State Senator Sylvia Allen: “… and you’ll never even know the mine was there when they are done.”
She’s a liar, or she’s too stupid to use Google and see what Uranium mine looks like. Regardless, she’s a prime example of how dangerous a reality challenged creationist can be when given a position of power. Arizona… you deserve what you get.
#2:
“Arizona… you deserve what you get.”
Jobs? Send them our way, please. We’re in deficit.
I find this position hilarious:
“We need clean energy! But mine the nasty materials for the panels and batteries and reactors and computer controlled grid out of someone else’s backyard!”
yaaawwnn, more comment bait for the war between the religious and the anti-religious at DU
I’m a bit confused. What’s wrong with thinking the Earth is only 6,000 or so years old? There is a lot of evidence to suggest that possibility. I’m not saying that it is, but it could be. The fact is that we just don’t know for sure.
Yet another country that appears to be run by religious zealots.
Great… More religious fools in high places.
#5. And that evidence would be????
#5 adamlepp said… “The fact is that we just don’t know for sure.”
Assuming you’re not just causing trouble… what evidence do you speak of? The mountains? The mid-oceanic ridge? Oil in the ground? The light from stars that comes from farther then 6000 light years?
By your reasoning, you can’t prove that the Earth existed in the 1800’s.
What’s wrong with thinking the Earth is only 6,000 or so years old? There is a lot of evidence to suggest that possibility
No there isn’t. There isn’t any. Everything young-earthers claim is evidence has been thoroughly debunked.
brm, I doubt that your hilarious feeling would last long if strip mining of uranium was proposed in your back yard…. especially when there are cleaner safer alternatives readily available.
And if you listen to the video, you’ll find she is not thinking about jobs, but rather revenue for the state. It’s about money.
#12:
The state is deep in deficit. Revenue for the state isn’t a bad thing at this point.
Adamlepp… challenge.
You’ve mentioned 3 arguments. Do a little on-line research of your own right now, and post your findings on the truth of those speculations. It shouldn’t take long.
And they say Sarah Palin is an idiot.
I don’t think it is a gender issue. I think it is most Americans.

#5,
For the umpteenth time, science is not about “truth”. Truth can be left for religions. Science is not about absolutes. Science is about reality. Everything in science is a theory. “Gravity” is a theory, an “an analytic structure designed to explain a set of observations”. You can choose to believe in the theory of gravity or not, and if you don’t, you’re welcome to go ahead and jump off the nearest building (not that I’d want you to, but I’d bet any amount you’d fall down to the ground). There are not “different sides” of a theory. Theories have inherent limitations, but that doesn’t mean they lose their usefulness altogether. We can still use Newton’s theories even though it has been proven they are not quite “true”. When creationists want to propose a debate between religion (yes, it is religion no matter how you dress it up or call it) and science it’s comparing apples and oranges. Religions claim a hold on “truth” whereas science only establishes theories to explain reality.
Republicans are idiots when it comes to Science, and Democrats are idiots when it comes to Economics. Great choices for who to vote for, eh?
Ahh the open minds of liberals… So accepting and tolerant 8D
That’s why I hate everyone.
#13, brm… and you would accept lies about the long term damage from an ignorant person to justify that revenue? The point of this argument is about a huge decision made with total ignorance, and/or deception.
With a rational and intelligent person at the helm, we would hear the true pros and cons on wether to proceed or not… but not from this dimwit.
I’m a young-earth evolutionist. I firmly believe that the earth is only 6,000 years old BUT I fully support the theory of evolution. I just think it happened a lot faster than we think. Age of dinosaurs? 1,125 years. Accent of man? 875 years.
If you look at both sides of the argument it’s the only answer that makes sense.
#14 Both sides attack the other and make claims that so and so is wrong we’re right here is how they are wrong. I’ve read up on these issues (books, publications, and of course online). Everybody is right and everybody can prove they are right. I’m not here to prove anybody right…or wrong. I’ve simply stated some things I’ve read and heard.
#16. I very much agree with you. I only have one comment on it. Some people often take religion and try turn it into science and others take science and turn it into religion. Something we should try to avoid, or as we’ve all seen it just turns into a big argument and an even bigger mess.
There’s no law against being stupid but when being stupid affects thousands of people then that’s another thing.
Sylvia Allen is showing her state her level of critical thinking, which is zero. Zilch. Nada.
Maybe taking away her food would make her want to educate herself a bit more.
#21, Mojo Yugen, lol, I guess it’s all a matter of how long your year is.
Statistically, half the population is below average.
#21 if evolution happened that quickly, that the planet would be overrun by morons by now…oh wait…
#22 adamlepp said “Everybody is right and everybody can prove they are right.”
No. The vast majority of science believe the Earth is over 4 billion years old. The other side cherry picks their arguments to “prove” their side.
I believe it not because it’s written somewhere, but because it makes sense. I don’t wake up and find a mountain in my backyard. Mountains take eons to happen via geologic forces. I look at the Grand Canyon and there’s a river at the bottom. Doesn’t it make sense that the river cut through the rock very slowly?
Believing the evidence before you is not more damaging to religion then discovering that the sun goes around the Earth was.
11,
SHOW me something that we have measured thats BILLIONS of years old. BESIDES the stars.
And the only way we measure that is with an OLD method of triangulation to measure distance, and then divide by the speed of light.
4,
nothing was commented about religion, until you brought it up.. My comment was on TIME and population.
21,
then you must think MANKIND is smarter then we are?? AND if we are that smart, why havnt we gone further?
The problems with a short history comes under 1 FACT. DEATH.
In the past there were so many ways to DIE, that if you got up in the morning it was cause for a celebration.
WHO wants to do the math in the POPULATION of this planet given that 2 persons STARTED IT and a 90% chance of death by 13? and family size of 10-15..
Lets see. 5 generations per 100 years.
5×60=300 generations..
300 times 12 kids..(Adam had 12 kids?) to the power of 60. THEN take 90% off and see how many people are left? I think thats to HIGH.
That this is even a DISCUSSION is depressing.

6,000 years? I guess that means the 9,550 year old “Christmas Tree” was floating in space for 3,550 years looking for a place to root. (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/04/080414-oldest-tree.html)

I really get annoyed when people talk about science as “Truths.” It’s sickens me almost as bad as Doctors and Scientist who uses it in the same fashion.
