Impressive, or is it a fluke?

Also Banned!

Several Sun Microsystems Inc employees, especially related to the Database Group, have been denied short stay business visas to Australia, over the last few months, as they have been seen to be competing with local Australian businesses unfairly.

I regret to share that this will adversely affect MySQL presence at linux.conf.au in Hobart, Tasmania 19-24.1.2009.

There goes the conference business in Australia.

Detroit Auto Show – Dodge Circuit EV – All Circuits Are Busy. Try Back in 2010. – List – NYTimes.com — This has got to be the worst looking electric vehicle ever designed. It looks like it was done by a high school kid using after-market parts trying to copy a design from a 1970’s Hot Wheels toy. And the color? Cripes! Chrysler is doomed.

Chrysler calls this all-electric performance sports car a prototype — but didn’t say whether it will be first Chrysler electric vehicle to be produced out of its ENVI portfolio of “production-intent” vehicles.

WHAT THEY SAID The Dodge Circuit EV displays bold exterior and interior styling with outstanding performance, zero gasoline consumption and zero tailpipe emissions. It has all new front and rear-end designs from the version that was shown in the fall.

Note the use of the word “bold” rather than the word “hideous.”

The men who stole from the body of a dead man on a Dublin bus were captured on CCTV and will pay for their dreadful crime, said the dead man’s mother today. “Gardai told me they have them on film in the bus. Now I just want them brought to justice,” said Kathleen Grendon (66).

Her son Jason (38) died while sitting in the backseat on the upper deck of the 78A bus. When the alarm was raised and the bus driver and passengers waited for an ambulance crew to arrive to remove his body, two men boarded the bus and stole a gold chain from around the dead man’s neck. The thieves also stole a mobile telephone from the dead man and left the scene before gardai arrived. Mrs Grendon, who lives at Muskerry Road in Ballyfermot, said: “I know who did it. There are a lot of people who would like to hurt them for what they did but I just want them to come clean and let the guards handle it.”

The ‘mugging of a dead man’ has caused widespread revulsion as gardai continue their investigation into the crime that happened in daylight on May 10 last as the bus was stationary on Coldcut Road. Gardai confirmed to Dublin City Coroner Dr Kieran Geraghty at an inquest this week that they knew the identities of the two suspects and were continuing to work on the case. Mrs Grendon condemned the thieves. She said: “They were cowards, without a living doubt. “They knew Jason and they would never have stolen his gold chain if he was alive. Jason was a big lad and knew how to handle himself.” She said her son had even introduced one of the men to her some time before his death.

DailyTech – VW Teases with 55 MPG Turbodiesel Bluesport Roadster — At least one company is thinking “cool” rather than thinking about how to save the planet.

VW is looking to change that perception today with the unveiling of the Bluesport concept at the Detroit Auto Show. The Bluesport bucks the trend of most concept vehicles unveiled at auto shows and is near production ready — in fact, the mid-engine roadster is said to share the same platform with an upcoming “budget” Porsche model which is said to recall back to the 914.

The mid-engine Bluesport roadster is RWD instead of the FWD configuration found in most current VW models available in the U.S. Not surprisingly, VW dug way down into the parts bin to secure the magnificent dual-clutch six-speed transmission which can be had in the aforementioned GTI.

At first, figuring out how pebble-sized rocks organize themselves in evenly-spaced patterns in sand seemed simple and even intuitive. But once Andrew Leier…started observing, he discovered that the most commonly held notions did not apply. And even more surprising, was that his findings revealed answers to NASA’s questions about sediment transport and surface processes on Mars.

Leier first studied loose pebbles and rocks, also known as clasts, when he was looking at sand dunes in Wyoming and noticed that the clasts seemed to spread away from each other in an almost organized fashion. It turns out, NASA was examining similar patterns on the sandy surface of Mars.

NASA proposed that wind was moving these rocks around. But Leier, who co-authored the study with Jon Pelletier at the University of Arizona and James Steidtmann at the University of Wyoming, says that would be impossible. They also discovered that rather than being pushed backward by the breeze, clasts actually tend to move into the direction of prevailing winds…

Instead, the loose sand around clasts is removed by the wind, causing scour-pits to form in front of larger clasts. Eventually, the rocks fall forward (or laterally) into the scours and then, the process repeats.

“What I find most interesting about this is that something as seemingly mundane as the distribution of rocks on a sandy, wind-blown surface can actually be used to tell us a lot about how wind-related processes operate on a place as familiar as the Earth and as alien as Mars,” says Leier. “It’s chaotic and simple at the same time.”

Leier’s article is published in the January 2009 edition of Geology. I have to thank him for solving a puzzle that’s bemused me on many of my walks on the Caja del Rio mesa across the valley from my home. Not that the solution will impede ghost and alien hunters.

Honey Laundering: A sticky trail of intrigue and crime — China is the nexus of all sorts of garbage. My advice, buy honey from a local beekeeper who you can trust.

A far cry from the innocent image of Winnie the Pooh with a paw stuck in the honey pot, the international honey trade has become increasingly rife with crime and intrigue. In the U.S., where bee colonies are dying off and demand for imported honey is soaring, traders of the thick amber liquid are resorting to elaborate schemes to dodge tariffs and health safeguards in order to dump cheap honey on the market, a five-month Seattle P-I investigation has found.

The business is plagued by foreign hucksters and shady importers who rip off conscientious U.S. packers with honey diluted with sugar water or corn syrup — or worse, tainted with pesticides or antibiotics.

Among the P-I’s findings: Big shipments of contaminated honey from China are frequently laundered in other countries — an illegal practice called “transshipping” — in order to avoid U.S.import fees, protective tariffs or taxes imposed on foreign products that intentionally undercut domestic prices.

In a series of shipments in the past year, tons of honey produced in China passed through the ports of Tacoma and Long Beach, Calif., after being fraudulently marked as a tariff-free product of Russia. Tens of thousands of pounds of honey entering the U.S. each year come from countries that raise few bees and have no record of producing honey for export.

The government promises intense scrutiny of honey crossing our borders but only a small fraction is inspected, and seizures and arrests remain rare.

The feds haven’t adopted a legal definition of honey, making it difficult for enforcement agents to keep bad honey off the shelves.

Turns out according to CBS 60 Minutes that Morgan Stanley was the nation’s biggest oil company. We were all paying a $2/gallon tax to rich investors. The collapse probably saved us money in the long run. For those of you who thought the market was being manipulated – you were right!

Natalie Dylan, 22, claims her offer of a one-night stand has persuaded 10,000 men to bid for sex with her.

Last September, when her auction came to light, she had received bids up to £162,000 ($243,000) but since then interest in her has rocketed. The student who has a degree in Women’s Studies insisted she was not demeaning herself. Miss Dylan, from San Diego, California, USA, said she was persuaded to offer herself to the highest bidder after her sister Avia, 23, paid for her own degree after working as a prostitute for three weeks.

She said she had had a lot of attention from a wide range of men, including “weirdos”, “those who get really graphically sexual about what they want to do to me” and “lots of polite requests from rich businessmen”. Miss Dylan said she did not think it was particularly significant to be willing to sell your virginity and insisted that she was happy to undergo medical tests for any doubters. She said: “I get some men who are obviously looking for a girlfriend but I try and make it clear that this is a one-night-only offer.

“I know that a lot of people will condemn me for this because it’s so taboo but I really don’t have a problem with that. “My study is completely authentic in that I truly am auctioning my virginity but I am not being sold into this. I’m not being taken advantage of in any way. “I think me and the person I do it with will both profit greatly from the deal.” She added: “It’s shocking that men will pay so much for someone’s virginity, which isn’t even prized so highly anymore.”

For that kind of money, why bother with college… it sounds like she may have found her ideal career. Hard to believe she’s offered twice as much as this Italian Model. Even so, I have to call BS on this one.

As 2009 kicks off, Honda is launching a new hybrid-only model that revives the Insight name on an altogether more practical machine. This time Honda is aiming for real mass market appeal with a price the company hopes will make the new Insight “The Hybrid for Everyone.” Honda invited us out to Arizona before Christmas to sample the new Insight and we can now tell you all about it. Read on to find out if Honda’s Insight is on target.

In many respects, the original Insight was what the EV1 might have evolved into if GM had followed some of the development paths it looked into. The parallels to the EV1 are numerous. As much as people like to mythologize the EV1, even if GM had continued to produce it, it is unlikely that it would ever have been a commercial success because of its configuration. As much as green car fans like to tout the facts that most people drive alone most of the time and don’t drive very far, the chasm between what people need most of the time and what they buy is a large one.

Part of Honda’s goal with the new Insight was to create a car that was recognizable as a hybrid. This led directly to the shape you see in the photos (check out the gallery). As both Toyota with the Prius and General Motors with the Volt, one of the keys to maximizing the efficiency is to minimize the aerodynamic drag. Hence the Insight has a shape that moves through the air with minimal resistance.

Well, this is frightening. Time to start a ‘Halitosis is Healthy’ campaign?

Leading independent experts have issued this strong warning after investigating latest scientific evidence linking alcohol-containing mouthwashes to the deadly disease.

Their review, published in the Dental Journal of Australia, concludes there is now “sufficient evidence” that “alcohol-containing mouthwashes contribute to the increased risk of development of oral cancer”.

The ethanol in mouthwash is thought to allow cancer-causing substances to permeate the lining of the mouth more easily and cause harm.

Acetaldehyde, a toxic by-product of alcohol that may accumulate in the oral cavity when swished around the mouth, is also believed to be carcinogenic.

Listerine, the nation’s biggest-selling mouthwash and a brand endorsed by the Australian Dental Association (ADA), contains as much as 26 per cent alcohol.
[…]
The review reported evidence from an international study of 3210 people which found daily mouthwash use was a “significant risk factor” for head and neck cancer, irrespective of whether users also drank alcohol or smoked. […]Those who also drank alcohol had more than five times the risk – and even those who neither drank nor smoked still ran a four- to five-fold risk of contracting cancer. […]A Brazilian study has also found regular mouthwash use is associated with oral cancer regardless of alcohol or tobacco consumption.

Is this guy fair and balanced or what? Oddly, turns out the regular, professional press doesn’t like Joe the Reporter much. And as commenter jccalhoun pointed out, he’s been sent by the guys at PJTV.

While Nancy Pelosi seems to be in firm control of the new Congress, is that a good thing? If you read the whole op-ed below it makes it sound like she is more Bush-like than any Republican which should have made Republicans happy. But not now. Now, with the Dems in control of the House, Senate and White House, she seems to be swerving back to the left with some pretty sweeping changes to the way things are done in the House. Or are they to the left? She seems totally unpredictable. Or is she a very predictable, very typical, power grabbing politician, a tyrant who may go too far and alienate those she oversees? Is this the kind of leadership we need in our time of fiscal crisis much less everything else?

Democrats, it’s time to clean the House. Start at the top.

When the 111th Congress convenes in January, it is time for a change — a change of the Speaker of the House. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca) in her two years as speaker has enabled a pro-Bush, pro-corporate agenda almost as facilely and frequently as Republican presidential nominee John McCain.

In November 2006, voters put Democrats in the majority in Congress to end the Iraq occupation and hold Bush responsible for the war. But the among first things she did when she became speaker was take impeachment off the table, giving Bush a blank check to wage the Iraq war for two more years.
