DailyTech – Sea Ice Ends Year at Same Level as 1979 – FYI.

Lies I say! Now Let’s All Sing! Laaaaaa!

Rapid growth spurt leaves amount of ice at levels seen 29 years ago. Thanks to a rapid rebound in recent months, global sea ice levels now equal those seen 29 years ago, when the year 1979 also drew to a close.

Ice levels had been tracking lower throughout much of 2008, but rapidly recovered in the last quarter. In fact, the rate of increase from September onward is the fastest rate of change on record, either upwards or downwards. The data is being reported by the University of Illinois’s Arctic Climate Research Center, and is derived from satellite observations of the Northern and Southern hemisphere polar regions.

Earlier this year, predictions were rife that the North Pole could melt entirely in 2008. Instead, the Arctic ice saw a substantial recovery. Bill Chapman, a researcher with the UIUC’s Arctic Center, tells DailyTech this was due in part to colder temperatures in the region. Chapman says wind patterns have also been weaker this year. Strong winds can slow ice formation as well as forcing ice into warmer waters where it will melt.

In May, concerns over disappearing sea ice led the U.S. to officially list the polar bear a threatened species, over objections from experts who claimed the animal’s numbers were increasing.

Perhaps the Dvorak.org should revisit this topic.

The nation’s top selling conservative author has been banned from appearing on NBC, insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT. “We are just not going to have her on any more, it’s over,” a top network source explains. But a second top suit strongly denies there is any “Coulter ban”. “Look for a re-invite, as soon as Wednesday,” said the news executive, who asked not to be named. NBC’s TODAY show abruptly cut Ann Coulter from its planned Tuesday broadcast, claiming the schedule was overbooked.

Executives at NBC TODAY replaced Coulter with showbiz reporter Perez Hilton, who recently offered $1,000 to anyone who would throw a pie at Ann Coulter. Hilton is also launching a new book this week, RED CARPET SUICIDE. Coulter was set to unveil her new book, GUILTY. One network insider claims it was the book’s theme — a brutal examination of liberal bias in the new era — that got executives to dis-invite the controversialist. “We are just not interested in anyone so highly critical of President-elect Obama, right now,” a TODAY insider reveals. “It’s such a downer. It’s just not the time, and it’s not what our audience wants, either.” Others inside the peacock network strongly deny the book’s theme is at issue. For the book, Coulter reportedly received the most-lucrative advance ever paid to a conservative author.

Coulter was also to appear on the TODAY’s fourth hour. A host even teased the segment saying the ‘conservative pit bull and bestselling author’ would be a guest. NBC’s cable outlet, MSNBC, will also become a Coulter-free zone, insiders explain. Morning host Joe Scarborough is said to be concerned with the new ban. “He’s working to overrule it,” tips a source.

Its too bad, I will miss his witty repartee.

The Press Association: Third of teachers want Creationism — All the press material I’ve seen in England is very carefully worded as if it was orchestrated.

Three in 10 science teachers believe creationism should be taught in science lessons, according to a new survey.

And more than a third 37% of primary and secondary teachers in general believe that the subject should be taught alongside evolution and the Big Bang theory.

The Ipsos Mori poll of more than 900 primary and secondary teachers in England and Wales found that while nearly half 47% believe it should not be taught in science lessons, two thirds 65% agree that creationism should be discussed in schools.

This rises to three quarters of teachers 73% with science as their subject specialism. Two in three science specialists 65% do not think that creationism should be taught in science lessons. But few teachers think creationism as an idea should be dismissed outright.

Just one in four 26% agree with a view expressed by Professor Chris Higgins, vice-chancellor of Durham University that “creationism is completely unsupportable as a theory, and the only reason to mention creationism in schools is to enable teachers to demonstrate why the idea is scientific nonsense and has no basis in evidence or rational thought.”

Fiona Johnson, head of education research at Ipsos Mori and director of the Ipsos Mori Teachers Omnibus, said: “Our findings suggest that many teachers are trying to adopt a measured approach to this contentious issue, an approach which attempts not only to explain the essential differences between scientific and other types of ‘theory’, but also to acknowledge that – regardless of, or even despite, “the science” – pupils may have a variety of strongly held, and arguably equal value, faith-based beliefs.”

WASHINGTON — The waistlines of America’s youths are expanding, shrinking the pool of those eligible to join the U.S. military. But an Army program is giving overweight enlistees a second chance — and helping the military with its own expansion. The recently introduced waiver program allows enlistees who don’t qualify for the military because of their weight a chance to shape up after joining. So far, the program has helped the Army make its recruiting goals in what remains a tight recruiting market.

If the economic recession worsens, it could help the military’s recruiting efforts as people seek stable employment. That could reduce the need for waiver programs. However, nutritionists don’t see the trend of overweight Americans disappearing any time soon, ensuring the continuance of such programs in recruiting an all-volunteer force.

“We support any service who comes up with a scientifically defensible way of expanding the market (of recruits),” said Curtis Gilroy, director of accessions policy for the Pentagon.

Such waivers had been studied for years, but the program wasn’t implemented until fiscal 2007, when it admitted about 1,500 individuals (just a small slice of about 80,000 recruits). Recruits must pass a special battery of tests, including a “step test,” and do a number of push-ups to demonstrate their physical abilities. If they pass and are enlisted, they have a year to comply with the Army’s physical requirements, measured by “body mass index,” a formula that estimates body fat based on weight and height.

Now drop and give me 50 fatboy!

WASHINGTON Many people like to stop and play with newborn babies, but now some adult women are playing house with fake babies. Some women are even going as far as taking day trips with the fake babies to the park, out to eat, and even hosting birthday parties for them. Forty-nine-year-old Linda is married with no children of her own. Now, she says she feels like a mother because she has Reborns — dolls made to look and feel like the real thing. “It’s not a crazy habit, like, you know, drinking, or some sort of, something that’s going to hurt you. It’s like a hobby.and it doesn’t really hurt anybody,” Linda said.

These women are paying big bucks for this hobby, from $100 to a few thousand dollars. For Reborn owner Lachelle Moore, the fake babies fill a void. “What’s so wonderful about Reborns is that, um, they’re forever babies,” said Moore, who has grown children and grandchildren. “There’s no college tuition, no dirty diapers… just the good part of motherhood,” she added. In her Kansas City home, Moore even has an elaborate room for the dolls. She organizes birthday parties, bakes a cake and even invites guests.

Psychologists say there could be a problem if and when these women stop interacting socially with others in their life.

Forever babies? I saw a group of these grown women on the Today show with their “children”… creepy.

Oops! Twitter phishing scam snares CNN anchor | Webware – CNET This is amusing, but I can see how it can happen since the Twitter log-in is hinky anyway.

CNN anchor Rick Sanchez is one of the most popular users on microblogging service Twitter, with nearly 40,000 followers and a Twitterholic rank in the top 20. Unfortunately for Sanchez, it looks like he fell victim to the phishing scam that has been plaguing the popular service for several days now.

In a “tweet” that has since been deleted, Sanchez’s account displayed the message “i am high on crack right now might not be coming into work today”–and we’re pretty sure that did not come from Sanchez himself. He has now posted a response tweet explaining that his account was hacked.

Over the weekend, reports began to surface that there was a password-stealing phishing scam making the rounds on Twitter. Disguising itself as a private message that led to a fake Twitter log-in screen, the scam was widespread enough for Twitter to put a warning message on all members’ home pages alerting them of the issue.

Letter From Apple CEO Steve Jobs – Yahoo Finance — So apparently this weight loss is due to some hormone imbalance. What are the specifics? I’m guessing that whatever is causing it — if it were indeed some imbalance — could become a trendy new diet. “The Imbalance Diet.”

As many of you know, I have been losing weight throughout 2008. The reason has been a mystery to me and my doctors. A few weeks ago, I decided that getting to the root cause of this and reversing it needed to become my #1 priority.

Fortunately, after further testing, my doctors think they have found the cause — a hormone imbalance that has been “robbing” me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy. Sophisticated blood tests have confirmed this diagnosis.

The remedy for this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward, and Ive already begun treatment. But, just like I didnt lose this much weight and body mass in a week or a month, my doctors expect it will take me until late this Spring to regain it. I will continue as Apples CEO during my recovery.

From MSNBC

There is the prospect of a third member of the Bush family perhaps occupying the White House one day. Former President George H.W. Bush said on “Fox News Sunday” he would like to see his second son, Jeb Bush, become President.

The former President admitted right now would probably be a bad time” for another Bush in the White House, given the low public opinion rankings for the current President Bush.

The elder Bush said in spite of that, he wants to encourage his son Jeb’s political aspirations to “serve the greatest country in the world.”

The public elected Obama, a man with limited political experience. Could his presidency and cabinet be so bad as to swing the pendulum back to another Bush?

Jobs is someone who has “that vision thing” as one who didn’t put it and that’s what Obama says he wants. Could this guy be onto something or just more Apple fanboi (yes, that’s the right spelling) meanderings?

Why Steve Really Isn’t Giving the Keynote

When Apple announced that Steve Jobs wouldn’t be giving the Macworld Keynote, the blogosphere went into a frenzy. Although there was some debate, the common consensus at the end of all the pandemonium was that Steve Jobs was on his way to the grave. My thinking was in that camp for a while, but then as I was watching the news I thought of an interesting possibility… what if Steve Jobs isn’t stepping down due to his illness, but because he wants to take another job? You might say, “Steve would never take any job over Apple… he loves the company! Why would he leave for another company?”, but my answer would be that he’s not leaving for another company, but rather for our government… as Obama’s new Chief Technology Officer.

Before you call me insane, hear me out. Barack Obama needs someone who is ahead of the times, a visionary who could guide our technological decisions in the best way possible. Steve Jobs has proved time and time again that he knows what technology should be like, and that his vision of the future is essentially always correct when it comes to this field. He would be perfect for the position, because frankly, no one is as much of a genius as he is in this regard.

Another fact supporting my claim: Obama has announced every other member of his cabinet except for Chief Technology Advisor. Is this because he hasn’t made up his mind yet? I doubt it. He must have been thinking about this for a long time, considering it was his idea to create this position. A more likely scenario is that his choice, Steve Jobs, doesn’t want him to announce it. I can just picture Steve telling Obama that the only way he will take the job is if he can announce it at Macworld himself.

On the other hand. Or is that just a smokescreen to cover the truth? In Maclandia, perception is everything, so perhaps both are true…

Democrat Al Franken will be declared the winner of the tight U.S. Senate contest in Minnesota, emerging from a ballot recount with a slim margin over Republican Norm Coleman…

At the moment, Franken has a 225-vote lead,” after the weekend counting of what were deemed the last uncounted absentee ballots, said Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, a Democrat who oversaw the process.

Ritchie said unless the supreme court acts on Coleman’s request and orders more ballots to be counted, he will reconvene the state’s Canvassing Board on Monday to certify Franken as the winner of the November 4 contest.

Even so, Coleman’s campaign said it will likely challenge the result, which would require the state supreme court’s chief justice to appoint three judges to investigate its claims…

The recount of some 2.4 million votes cast for the pair has swung back and forth over several weeks. Coleman initially held the edge, but his narrow victory margin necessitated the recount under state law.

“The recount has been done so precisely, and so transparently,” it would be difficult to envision a challenge succeeding, Ritchie said.

If that’s the case, do you think that will keep the Republicans from dragging it out?
