CNET News – May 1, 2009:

The German branch of the environmental group World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) has conducted a study… on the environmental impact of electric vehicles in Germany.

Just like the U.S., Germany has an ambitious goal of introducing electric vehicles. Germany, which today has 41 million cars, aims to have 1 million electric cars or plug-in hybrid vehicles on the road by 2020. The conclusion of the study is that these electric cars only reduce greenhouse gases marginally.

The study, which was published in German in March, has not been widely circulated in English yet. The WWF Germany said a summary in English is set for publication this summer.

“What surprised us was that the carbon dioxide savings were so small,” Viviane Raddatz, vehicle expert at WWF Germany, said in a phone interview from Berlin.

The carbon dioxide emission reductions from these 1 million electrical vehicles in Germany’s transportation sector would be only 1 percent, according to the study, and overall national carbon dioxide emissions would only be cut by 0.1 percent. “That is not a very big deal,” Raddatz said, adding that “it is not going to help us out of the transportation emission mess.”

Financier Warren Buffett has said the US government is generally taking the right steps to aid economic recovery. The legendary investor was speaking to 35,000 shareholders of his Berkshire Hathaway company at their annual general meeting in Omaha, Nebraska.

The value of Berkshire Hathaway’s investments fell by nearly 10% in the last year and Mr Buffett’s personal wealth shrank by $25 billion. He told the AGM he expected the company to make further losses this year.

Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Mr Buffett said it had been “a very extraordinary year” and the economy had experienced “a financial hurricane”.

“When the American public pulls back the way they have, the government does need to step in. It is the right thing to do, but it won’t be a free ride.”

But he said the government had reacted well, telling his investors: “Overall, I commend the actions that were taken…”

Berkshire’s range of investments are seen as a bellwether of the US economy.

Some people raised questions on the issue of appointing a successor for 78-year-old Mr Buffett.

But Mr Buffett told the meeting he would not name a successor to begin following him now as all candidates were already running businesses and those not appointed would possibly choose to leave the company, the Associated Press reported.

“It’d be a waste of talent. I don’t really see any advantages in having some crown prince around,” he said.

Know any investors who lost only 10% in the sub-prime meltdown? Even if you’re not an investor, did your “well-managed” 401K do as well?

PUYALLUP, Wash. – A small airplane dropping from the sky after its engine failed wound up on a cushioning bunch of portable toilets — and the pilot was able to walk away apparently unhurt.

Gary Mayor of the Federal Aviation Administration says the Cessna 182 crashed Friday afternoon in Washington state after taking off from Thun Field, an airfield owned by Pierce County southeast of Tacoma.

Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer says the plane was about 150 feet in the air when the engine quit. Troyer told The News Tribune that the pilot tried to turn around to land but didn’t quite make it.

The plane hit a fence, flipped over and landed upside down on top of the portable toilets standing in a storage yard.

That’s a tale for the grand kids.

WARWICK — One moment, 15-year-old Kimberly Pisaturo, a smart and popular sophomore at Pilgrim High School, was walking to school, looking down at her cell phone, witnesses say, when she stepped into a crosswalk running alongside busy Warwick Avenue and into the path of a turning school bus.

She died there Friday morning before the 7:24 first bell sounded just up the street.

“For someone this young to lose their life is a tragedy of unmeasurable proportion,” School Committee member Paul Cannistra said hours later, long after firefighters had removed the red tarp encircling the place behind the bus where Kimberly’s body had lain, and the intersection of Warwick Avenue and Pilgrim Parkway had resumed its hectic pace.

The accident happened around 7:05 a.m. Police Chief Stephen M. McCartney said the bus, carrying about 20 Pilgrim students, had been driving north on Warwick Avenue. It stopped at the intersection. On a green light, it turned left onto Pilgrim Parkway heading for the high school about a quarter-mile away.

Witnesses told the police Kimberly appeared to be looking at her cell phone and had her head down when she walked into the crosswalk as the bus was turning in, McCartney said. Earphones and an iPod were also found on her, he said in a statement; it wasn’t clear whether she had been listening to music.

Kimberly may also have been wearing the hood of a sweatshirt pulled up, said School Supt. Peter Horoschak.

Cellphone use has killed more people than swine flu! It’s time to panic and put an end to the cellphone pandemic.

Sohn and Shays

In late November, Christopher Shays was still absorbing the shock of having lost his bid for re-election after 22 years in Congress when he made a troubling discovery: Tens of thousands of dollars had disappeared from his campaign treasury.

The news got worse, according to an adviser to Mr. Shays: The man Mr. Shays entrusted to run his political operation for nearly a decade had been quietly draining the account and had spent nearly $200,000 on Red Sox tickets, limousine travel, mysterious withdrawals at the Foxwoods casino and a donation of more than $1,000 to his synagogue.

The campaign manager, Michael Sohn, has not (yet) been charged with a crime…

In an interview this week, Mr. Shays said, “To lose an election is difficult; what happened since then is unimaginable…”

Mr. Sohn began as an intern for Mr. Shays and eventually became one of his most trusted advisers, Mr. Shays said. As campaign manager, he helped lead Mr. Shays to victories through a series of tough elections over the past decade before the congressman’s defeat in November.

It was a tough period politically for Mr. Shays, who until his defeat was the only Republican from New England in the House of Representatives. Democratic leaders in Washington had made him a target for defeat, pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into the district, while the national Republican Party…left Mr. Shays to fend for himself.

He doesn’t even get a chance to jump to the winning side.

I just thought you should know. How will you celebrate?

Thanks, K B

Griddle Virgin Mary and masked Mexican wrestlers. What more could you ask for? Sounds like the start of a script for a Will Ferrell movie. Or for drumming up business for your restaurant.

A restaurant in the small town of Calexico on the California-Mexico border has attracted a lot of diners after the image of the Virgin Mary was reported to have appeared on the food griddle.

After the restaurant’s cook reported the sighting of Our Lady of Guadalupe, restaurant manager Brenda Martinez revealed that there have been more than 100 people who have visited the place to have a look at the image.

Among the awe-struck was a group of masked Mexican wrestlers who arrived on April 30 for an exhibition at a nearby swap meet.

In little-noticed comments Thursday, the former White House counsel for President Richard Nixon John Dean said Thursday that former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice may have unwittingly admitted to a criminal conspiracy when questioned about torture by a group of student videographers at Stanford.
[…]
In a video that surfaced Thursday, Rice said, “The president instructed us that nothing we would do would be outside of our obligation, legal obligations under the convention against torture… I conveyed the authorization of the administration to the agency. And so by definition, if it was authorized by the president, it did not violate our obligations under the Convention Against Torture.”

Her comments raised eyebrows from online observers, who compared Rice’s answer to that of Richard Nixon’s infamous quip: “When the President does it, that means that it’s not illegal.”

Dean said he found Rice’s comments “surprising” and put her in a legal mire of possible conspiracy.

“She tried to say she didn’t authorize anything, then proceeded to say she did pass orders along to the CIA to engage in torture if it was legal by the standard of the Department of Justice,” Dean said. “This really puts her right in the middle of a common plan, as it’s known in international law, or a conspiracy, as it’s known in American law, and this indeed is a crime. If it indeed happened the way we think it did happen.”

In this case the banks are forced into these actions by nearsighted small towns.

Health and agricultural officials agree, pigs have much more to fear from people humans than the other way around. Pigs, it turns out, can contract the virus from infected humans.

We’re trying to minimize human traffic into our hog operation so our hogs do not get the disease from humans, which is probably a little bit of a twist from what most people have heard about,” said Elwyn Fitzke, a pork producer in Glenvil, Neb.

“This is a very big concern for us,” he added.

The National Pork Board sent an advisory counseling pork producers to implement what it called “biosecurity practices” — not to protect visitors, but to protect pigs.

Among the recommendations: Ban or limit outside visitors, double-check facilities’ ventilation and vaccinate all workers against seasonal flu viruses, so they don’t get sick and potentially weaken the pigs’ immune systems.

Let’s keep our priorities straight.

Oh brother, here we go. Recently, McAfee released a study that measured the carbon footprint of email Spam. Below are the key findings of that study:

• An estimated worldwide total of 62 trillion spam emails were sent in 2008
• Globally, annual spam energy use totals 33 billion kilowatt-hours (KWh), or 33 terawatt hours (TWh). That’s equivalent to the electricity used in 2.4 million homes in the United States, with the same GHG emissions as 3.1 million passenger cars using two billion United States gallons of gasoline
• Spam filtering saves 135 TWh of electricity per year. That’s like taking 13 million cars off the road
• If every inbox were protected by a state-of-the-art spam filter, organizations and individuals could reduce today’s spam energy by approximately 75 percent or 25 TWh per year. That’s equivalent to taking 2.3 million cars off the road
• The average GHG emission associated with a single spam message is 0.3 grams of CO2. That’s like driving three feet (one meter) in equivalent emissions, but
when multiplied by the annual volume of spam, it’s like driving around the Earth 1.6 million times
• A year’s email at a typical medium-size business uses 50,000 KWh; more than one fifth of that annual use can be associated with spam
• Filtering spam is beneficial, but fighting spam at the source is even better. When McColo, a major source of online spam, was taken offline in late 2008, the energy saved in the ensuing lull — before spammers rebuilt their sending capacity — equated to taking 2.2 million cars off the road
• Much of the energy consumption associated with spam (80 percent) comes from end-users deleting spam and searching for legitimate email (false positives). Spam filtering accounts for just 16 percent of spam related energy use

Not only is email spam an annoyance to your email inbox, but it’s also harming the environment? Preposterous or accurate?

Tourists enjoying a day of sightseeing at Windsor Castle got more than they bargained for today when a couple were caught having sex on the Queen’s lawn.

Ignoring signs asking visitors to Please Keep Off The Grass, the man and woman, said to be in their early 30, selected a spot near the castle’s Garter Tower and stripped off in full view of hotels, pubs and shops.

An employee at the Harte and Garter Hotel, which overlooks the castle, said guests went out to observe the scene and could not believe their eyes. The woman, who asked not to be named, said: “People were shouting things like ‘what are you doing?’ but the couple didn’t seem to care at all. It was going on for about 10 or 15 minutes, which is quite a long time, considering the location.”

Another witness, Mark Robinson, 44, said the couple carried on until police intervened. He said: “The officers told them to stop and the sight of the uniforms seemed to snap them out of it. They were unsteady on their feet and the guy pulled his trousers up and helped the girl put hers back on.

“The Japanese tourists were comparing their videos.”

This morning’s view from the hotel. Over the weekend I’ll be publishing the photos from the Queensday festivities. According to the long-term weather reports it should be raining. Note the total lack of clouds.

The latest bioterrorism attack by the New World Order is likely a beta test. Yes, it is a bioterrorism attack. It was a hybrid strain created from human, swine, and bird flu from North America, Europe, and Asia. It was created in a laboratory. This doesn’t happen in nature.

Baxter was caught shipping a weaponized avian bird flu mixed strain in their vaccines last month in Europe. Again, this is proof that this deadly virus was created in a laboratory because they did exactly that last month. Bayer was caught shipping HIV in their drugs in the 80s. Both of these events are published in mainstream newspapers.

I predicted this event last month in my documented and linked article when Baxter was caught. If Baxter was trying to do this, they weren’t going to stop trying, especially when Baxter wasn’t even prosecuted for the crime, and the television news was completely silent about it…

This latest flu hasn’t been widespread and not that deadly. It seems to be just a beta test and not the real release to drastically reduce the population of the world.

Yes, the ruling elite want to reduce the population of the world. They write about it in their books, in their think tank documents, in government documents, and at their conferences. You won’t hear about it on television news because they’re part of the mainstream media trust, along with AP and Reuters, which are all owned by the same people.

They add the industrial waste and active ingredient of rat poison, known as fluoride, in your water, causing your brain, liver, and bones to rot and decay. They add mercury, which is as toxic as lead or arsenic, to the vaccines as a preservative, causing autism and sudden infant death syndrome, among several other things. Yes, the government hates you and wants to kill you. Government loves war and death.

Read on, brave people. I hope and pray you will have the courage to face up to this conspiracy.

The more often Americans go to church, the more likely they are to support the torture of suspected terrorists, according to a new survey.

More than half of people who attend services at least once a week — 54 percent — said the use of torture against suspected terrorists is “often” or “sometimes” justified. Only 42 percent of people who “seldom or never” go to services agreed, according the analysis released by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

White evangelical Protestants were the religious group most likely to say torture is often or sometimes justified — more than six in 10 supported it. People unaffiliated with any religious organization were least likely to back it. Only four in 10 of them did.

The religious group most likely to say torture is never justified was Protestant denominations — such as Episcopalians, Lutherans and Presbyterians — categorized as “mainline” Protestants, in contrast to evangelicals. Just over three in 10 of them said torture is never justified. A quarter of the religiously unaffiliated said the same, compared with two in 10 white non-Hispanic Catholics and one in eight evangelicals.

Is anyone surprised?
