The most interesting part is it’s XP. I wonder if Windows users banded together and said they wanted secure XP instead of Vista and 7 and Microsoft listened and…

Yeah, right.

It’s the most secure distribution version of Windows XP ever produced by Microsoft: More than 600 settings are locked down tight, and critical security patches can be installed in an average of 72 hours instead of 57 days. The only problem is, you have to join the Air Force to get it.

The Air Force persuaded Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to provide it with a secure Windows configuration that saved the service about $100 million in contract costs and countless hours of maintenance. At a congressional hearing this week on cybersecurity, Alan Paller, research director of the Sans Institute, shared the story as an template for how the government could use its massive purchasing power to get companies to produce more secure products. And those could eventually be available to the rest of us.

Security experts have been arguing for this “trickle-down” model for years. But rather than wield its buying power for the greater good, the government has long wimped out and taken whatever vendors served them. If the Air Force case is a good judge, however, things might be changing.
[…]
What this means for the rest of us is unclear. Threat Level contacted Microsoft to find out if any part of the locked down Windows XP configuration got into general consumer versions of the software or has influenced how it configures future versions of its software. The company did not respond.

May Day demonstrators riot in Germany and Turkey – Telegraph — I like the way that the protestors are burning plastic bins and breathing the lovely vinyl tinged polyphenolic smoke. Mmmm, sweet idiocy.

May Day is traditionally marked by union rallies in many European countries and the global economic downturn is expected to bring record crowds this year. Several countries, including Germany, are facing their worst recession since the Second World War.

Unions in France are joining forces for the first time since the Liberation. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to turn out to join almost 300 marches around France in the third major demonstration this year against President Nicolas Sarkozys handling of the economic crisis.

Some politicians have warned of a threat of “revolution”, following radical action such as “bossnapping” factory executives and an ongoing strike that has crippled dozens of French universities.

More about the new trend, “bossnapping,” here.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs issued an apology Thursday for Vice President Joe Biden’s comments that he wouldn’t recommend taking a commercial flight or riding in a subway car because swine flu virus can spread in confined places.

“Obviously, if anybody was unduly alarmed for whatever reason, we would apologize for that. And I hope that my remarks and remarks of people at CDC and Secretary Napolitano have appropriately cleared up what he meant to say,” Gibbs said during the daily briefing at the White House.

Biden’s office later sought to clarify his remarks by saying he was only urging sick people to avoid planes and trains. Gibbs said President Barack Obama had not spoken to Biden about his remarks. In an interview Thursday on NBC’s “Today” show, Biden said, “I would tell members of my family — and I have — I wouldn’t go anywhere in confined places now,” Biden said on NBC’s “Today” show.. “It’s not that it’s going to Mexico. It’s [that] you’re in a confined aircraft. When one person sneezes, it goes all the way through the aircraft. That’s me. …

“So, from my perspective, what it relates to is mitigation. If you’re out in the middle of a field when someone sneezes, that’s one thing. If you’re in a closed aircraft or closed container or closed car or closed classroom, it’s a different thing.”

A little more than one hour later, Biden rushed out a statement backing off. Biden’s remarks contradicted more restrained advice from President Barack Obama and the federal government — and the last thing the White House wants to do right now is shut down the airline industry and big-city subways out of mass panic.

The Barbie doll has been given a make-over for her 50th birthday and been given tattoos.

The doll now comes with a set of sticker tattoos so children can make her look like their heroes, such as Jordan, Amy Winehouse or Cheryl Cole…

Customize the fashions and apply the fun temporary tattoos on you too. Choose from Barbie or Nikki dolls, both include additional fashions, tattoo stamper and tattoos.”

But parents have expressed concern.

So, would you buy this doll for your kids? What’s your answer when your daughter says, “I want a tattoo like Barbie?”

What if she’d like to be tattooed like this Barbie Doll?

Los Angeles — Finally there’s a way to become octo-mom Nadya Suleman without having to give birth or getting mixed up in a Charlie Kaufman movie. “Octomom the Musical” scheduled auditions for Tuesday at Bang Comedy Studio. The casting session runs from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 457 N. Fairfax Ave. otixonsale2_39t11

The “fast-paced musical pastiche ripped from the headlines” is an “epic for our strange times,” according to its website. The 10-week run will begin June 19, with performances every Friday and Saturday at 9:30 p.m.

Producers released a description of what it takes to play Suleman:
[OCTO AND VARIOUS]Female, Mid 20’s – mid 30’s. Funny, whimsical, but not too charactery. She should be able to command authority, play broad range of facial expressions plus physical comedy. Sketch and improv experience a plus. Likable, energetic and at the same time able to be emotionally expressive and believable. Can handle musical theatre and pop styles a plus. Actress who can move. Can’t make Tuesday’s audition? Don’t worry, octo-hopefuls. According to the show’s creator, Chris Voltaire, more try-outs will be held next week.

We are truly doomed as a species.

STROUDSBURG, Pa. (CBS 3) ― Two elderly sisters from Monroe County, Pennsylvania have been arrested for allegedly distributing drugs.

Elizabeth Marie Grube, 70, and her 65-year-old sister, Elaine Volkert, are facing drug charges after being arrested on April 14.

Investigators said they seized 400 bags of heroin with a street value of $8,000 and more than $2,000 from the home of Grube in the 1000 block of Ehler Street.

On the same day, a task force seized 988 bags of heroin with a street value of $20,000 and approximately $1,600 in cash from Volkert’s home also in the 1000 block of Ehler Street. Police also seized quantities of Oxycontin and marijuana during the search.

Pepsi and Mountain Dew Throwback

Pepsi has taken advantage of the growing trend against high-fructose corn syrup and introduced sugar sweetened alternatives under the “Throwback” label for two of their HFCS laden flagship beverages. Yes, in certain areas, there have been Kosher versions of both Coke and Pepsi available for some time – and Coke and Pepsi imported from Mexico (that not only use sugar, but come in glass bottles) remains a popular alternative (if you can find it – and it sells for $1.29 – $1.99 per 12 ounce bottle). There are regional brands that still use sugar to sweeten their drinks, but those also sell at a premium. Hopefully, the nationwide exposure causes this to do so well in the next 6-8 weeks that Pepsi sees the light and keeps this as a permanent option.

I have tried the Pepsi Throwback and the taste is definitely superior to HFCS Pepsi.

Review of Pepsi Throwback (notice the difference in the carbonation)

Review of Mountain Dew Throwback

Review of Mexican Coke (quotes a 3 year old article where Coca-Cola insists that sugar and HFCS taste exactly the same)

The sugar industry loves this!

Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. and a “pure” Republican

A Michigan Republican says she canceled an event set to be attended by Utah’s moderate GOP governor because it would have betrayed the party’s values.

Kent County, Mich., Republican Chairwoman Joanne Voorhees canceled the party fundraiser scheduled for Saturday, which was to be attended by Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr…

The voters want and expect us to stand on principle and return to our roots,” Voorhees was quoted by the Grand Rapids Press as saying in an e-mail. “Unfortunately, by holding an event with Governor Huntsman, we would be doing the exact opposite.”

Voorhees didn’t specify in the e-mail why the fundraiser was canceled, and she didn’t return calls to the Tribune. However, the group Campaign for Michigan Families praised the cancellation, saying it was because of Huntsman’s support of civil unions for same-sex couples.

So, Republicans are going to win elections – by turning away Republicans who win elections?

The blog doesn’t usually feature produced videos of this kind since the way they are presented clearly shows a bias. However, when you consider what’s being said in the video and the recent outbreak of Swine flu, your mind wanders towards interesting and frightening conspiracy theories.

Pres. Obama

It’s not my fault!

“That wasn’t me,” President Barack Obama said on his 100th day in office, disclaiming responsibility for the huge budget deficit waiting for him on Day One.

It actually was partly him _ and the other Democrats controlling Congress the previous two years _ who shaped the latest in a string of precipitously out-of-balance budgets.

And as a presidential candidate and president-elect, he backed the twilight Bush-era stimulus plan that made the deficit deeper, all before he took over and promoted spending plans that have made it much deeper still.

A look at some of his claims Wednesday:

OBAMA: “We began by passing a Recovery Act that has already saved or created over 150,000 jobs.” _ from news conference.

THE FACTS: This assertion is flawed on several levels. For starters, the U.S. has lost more than 1.2 million jobs since Obama took office, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Even if Obama’s stimulus bill saved or created as many jobs as he says, that number is dwarfed by the number of recent job losses.

OBAMA: “Number one, we inherited a $1.3 trillion deficit. … That wasn’t me. Number two, there is almost uniform consensus among economists that in the middle of the biggest crisis, financial crisis, since the Great Depression, we had to take extraordinary steps. So you’ve got a lot of Republican economists who agree that we had to do a stimulus package and we had to do something about the banks. Those are one-time charges, and they’re big, and they’ll make our deficits go up over the next two years.” — in Missouri.

THE FACTS: Congress, under Democratic control in 2007 and 2008, controlled the purse strings that led to the deficit Obama inherited. A Republican president, George W. Bush, had a role, too: He signed the legislation.

Obama supported the emergency bailout package in Bush’s final months — a package Democratic leaders wanted to make bigger.

Typical political spin.
