The Big Takeover : Rolling Stone — This entire essay is a must-read. Very funny (as a black comedy).

The latest bailout came as AIG admitted to having just posted the largest quarterly loss in American corporate history — some $61.7 billion. In the final three months of last year, the company lost more than $27 million every hour. That’s $465,000 a minute, a yearly income for a median American household every six seconds, roughly $7,750 a second. And all this happened at the end of eight straight years that America devoted to frantically chasing the shadow of a terrorist threat to no avail, eight years spent stopping every citizen at every airport to search every purse, bag, crotch and briefcase for juice boxes and explosive tubes of toothpaste. Yet in the end, our government had no mechanism for searching the balance sheets of companies that held life-or-death power over our society and was unable to spot holes in the national economy the size of Libya whose entire GDP last year was smaller than AIG’s 2008 losses.

Don’t forget Bin Laden “Dead or Alive.” They couldn’t find him either. But liquids in the suitcase, yes!

Barack Obama has unveiled his administration’s new strategy in Afghanistan, including the deployment of an additional 4,000 US troops to train Afghan forces, following a review of policy on Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The new strategy includes proposals to counter a persistent Taliban and al-Qaeda campaign that spans the two countries’ shared border, and additional development aid for both nations.

Obama, who ordered the review of Afghanistan and Pakistan shortly after taking office in January, said a new strategy was essential because intelligence indicated al-Qaeda was “actively planning attacks” on the US from Pakistan.

“This is not simply an American problem, it’s an international security problem of the highest order,” he said.

Here’s the full text of his statement.

Aides to former Republican presidential nominee John McCain questioned running mate Sarah Palin’s ongoing second-guessing of the McCain campaign.

The McCain aides were responding to a report on CNN that the governor got a laugh when she told a GOP audience in Alaska she had declined to pray with McCain staffers prior to her debate with Joe Biden, who was elected vice president in November.

Describing the pre-debate atmosphere, Palin told the crowd last Friday, she was “looking for somebody to pray with, I just need maybe a little help, maybe a little extra.”

“The people that she has, either working at her (political action committee) or advisers in Alaska, aren’t exactly making the best decisions for her,” the staffer said.

Should not-so-Christian Republicans get prepared to follow sacred writ?

I can’t imagine wearing this much less wanting to use it, although playing back a scream at inappropriate times might be fun. In that case, I would opt for a recording of the Wilhelm Scream.

Henry Ford’s Contribution to Global Warming

California to reduce carbon emissions by banning black cars? — It’s harder to make black cars ever look clean too. My superstitious mother used to think black cars were evil, apparently the Air Resources Board agrees!

In yet another case of Regulators Gone Wild, California legislation may soon restrict the color options for your next car. The specific colors that are currently on the chopping block are all dark hues, with the worst offender seemingly the most innocuous color you could think of: black. What resentment could California possibly harbor against black cars, you ask? Apparently, the Air Resources Board figures that the climate control systems of dark colored cars need to work harder than their lighter siblings, especially after sitting in the sun for a few hours. Anyone living in a hot, sunny climate will tell you that this assumption is accurate. Similar legislation already exists for buildings and has proven successful at reducing the energy consumption of skyscrapers.

So, what’s the problem? Paint suppliers have reportedly been testing their pigments and processes to see if it’s possible to meet CARB’s proposed mandate of 20 percent solar reflectivity by 2016 with a phase-in period starting in 2012, and it’s not looking good. Apparently, when the proper pigments and chemicals are added to black paint, the resulting color is currently being referred to as “mud-puddle brown.” That doesn’t sound very attractive, now does it? Windshields, backlights and sunroofs are also slated to get reflective coatings starting in 2012.

Former Poulsbo mayor arrested in sexual assaults | Seattle Times Newspaper The guy was apparently a masher. I mention this because Poulsbo is a town near my Washington State house and one of the prettiest little places you will ever visit. But now it will be known as Poulsboner. *RIMSHOT*

Former Poulsbo Mayor Richard Mitchusson was arrested this afternoon for suspicion of assault and stalking.

A sheriff’s spokesman said Mitchusson, 70, a Poulsbo resident, was accused of “certain actions, conduct and demeanor” that included unwanted personal advances and inappropriate sexual contact with at least three women at their homes or workplaces within the past 15 months. The investigation was conducted at the request of Poulsbo Police.

Mitchusson was booked into Kitsap County Jail on two counts of fourth-degree assault with sexual motivation and one count of stalking. Bail was set at $50,000.

Exactly what constitutes sexual assault nowadays? The guy is 70!

Here’s a quick look at the Game Developers Conference in SF this week. In case you wanted to see how crowded it was.

Below is a short video of the Arena Motion Capture software that I found fascinating. It and other software systems mark the end of actual animation.

The GDC also had a jobs fair that was crammed with companies and people looking for jobs. I do not think this part of the economy is suffering in any way. The video sucks because the aisles were just crammed with people.

Rahm Emanuel’s profitable stint at mortgage giant — chicagotribune.com — There are so many conflicts of interest in this administration you’d think they were all Republicans. Of course the New York media refuses to give this much attention lest they get cut out of those press conferences.

Before its portfolio of bad loans helped trigger the current housing crisis, mortgage giant Freddie Mac was the focus of a major accounting scandal that led to a management shake-up, huge fines and scalding condemnation of passive directors by a top federal regulator.

One of those allegedly asleep-at-the-switch board members was Chicago’s Rahm Emanuel—now chief of staff to President Barack Obama—who made at least $320,000 for a 14-month stint at Freddie Mac that required little effort.

As gatekeeper to Obama, Emanuel now plays a critical role in addressing the nation’s mortgage woes and fulfilling the administration’s pledge to impose responsibility on the financial world.

Fiery Faucets Now A Concern In 8 Colorado Homes – wcbstv.com — Wait until all that cap and trade CO2 is pumped into the earth and it leaches into the water supply. SODA POP!

It appeared to initially be an isolated incident in Fort Lupton, but now more reports are surfacing about water in homes being flammable, CBS station KCNC-TV reports.

Jesse and Amee Ellsworth said last week they have so much natural gas in their water that they can light it on fire. The gas has apparently been leaking into their water well from a nearby gas well for the last six months. They say the gas companies are working on a well water treatment system, possibly for the entire community, but that any solution will take time.

Seven more homeowners in the area have since come forward with the same problem but with possibly a different cause.

“Open for Questions” is a new experiment for WhiteHouse.gov, the President’s latest effort to open up the White House and give Americans from around the country a direct line to the Administration.

This first round will deal with a chief concern for all of us: the economy. We’ve created a few categories to better organize the questions, and encourage you to search for a specific question before you submit your own in case it already exists.

This experiment is about encouraging transparency and accountability, so ask the President exactly what it is you want to know – but let others do the same. It is a community-moderated system, but remember that even though you may not like the viewpoint behind someone’s question, everyone has a right to their opinion. Also remember that Americans of all ages will be participating in this event, so be thoughtful about the words you choose. Participants are asked to follow some basic guidelines for submitting their own questions and flagging other questions as inappropriate.

Leave your opinion on how it went.
