Yeah, Krugman is a tad toward the left, but has he got a point?
For three years and more, policy debate in Washington has been dominated by warnings about the dangers of budget deficits. A few lonely economists have tried from the beginning to point out that this fixation is all wrong, that deficit spending is actually appropriate in a depressed economy. But even though the deficit scolds have been wrong about everything so far — where are the soaring interest rates we were promised? — protests that we are having the wrong conversation have consistently fallen on deaf ears.
We haven’t had a new ‘War on…’ for a while. This seems as good as any.
Antibiotic-resistant bacteria with the potential to cause untreatable infections pose “a catastrophic threat” to the population, England’s chief medical officer warns in a report calling for urgent action worldwide.

“Antimicrobial resistance poses a catastrophic threat,” said Davies. “If we don’t act now, any one of us could go into hospital in 20 years for minor surgery and die because of an ordinary infection that can’t be treated by antibiotics. And routine operations like hip replacements or organ transplants could be deadly because of the risk of infection.“That’s why governments and organisations across the world, including the World Health Organisation and G8, need to take this seriously.”
