“C’mon kid, it’s time to see the doctor!” |
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – All U.S. children aged 6 months to 18 years should get a seasonal influenza vaccine every year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday.
The CDC’s Dr. Anne Schuchat said the agency was strengthening recommendations for children to get the vaccination against seasonal influenza, especially with fears that the new H1N1 virus will be added to the already expected burden of seasonal flu.
Labels matter. Indeed, they can be the difference between life and death. Someone lying in a hospital bed labelled “minimally conscious state” will be kept on life support indefinitely. If the label says “vegetative state”, however, that life support could be turned off any time. A layman might not be able to tell the difference. But a doctor can.
Or can he? A worrying study just published in BioMed Central Neurology by Caroline Schnakers, Steven Laureys and their colleagues at the University of Liège’s coma science group suggests that perhaps he cannot—or, perhaps worse, that he prefers to use his intuition rather than the latest diagnostic techniques to tell the difference. As a result, many people may be at risk of early termination even when they show flickering signs that their consciousness has not departed entirely.
[…]
Distinguishing between these different kinds of coma patients has, everyone acknowledges, never been easy. Indeed, in 1996 Keith Andrews and his colleagues at the Royal Hospital for Neurodisability in London found that 40% of the patients in their hospital who had been diagnosed as being in a vegetative state, were not. But earlier this decade, two new tools became available, so things might have been expected to get better.
[…]
Dr Laureys’s measured conclusion is that neurologists do not like their skills to be replaced or upstaged by a scale. Minimally conscious state being a relatively new diagnosis, he says, it may be that some doctors are unfamiliar with its criteria, but that is all the more reason for deferring to the coma recovery scale. The trouble with a diagnosis based on conviction rather than measurement is that it is vulnerable to external influence. Insurance companies, for example, prefer a diagnosis of vegetative to one of minimally conscious, Dr Laureys says, because no expensive rehabilitation is required for those in a vegetative state.

The Christian right is making a fresh push to force religion onto the school curriculum in Texas with the state’s education board about to consider recommendations that children be taught that there would be no United States if it had not been for God.
Members of a panel of experts appointed by the board to revise the state’s history curriculum, who include a Christian fundamentalist preacher who says he is fighting a war for America’s moral soul, want lessons to emphasise the part played by Christianity in the founding of the US and that religion is a civic virtue.
Opponents have decried the move as an attempt to insert religious teachings in to the classroom by stealth, similar to the Christian right’s partially successful attempt to limit the teaching of evolution in biology lessons in Texas.
One of the panel, David Barton, founder of a Christian heritage group called WallBuilders, argues that the curriculum should reflect the fact that the US Constitution was written with God in mind including that “there is a fixed moral law derived from God and nature”, that “there is a creator” and “government exists primarily to protect God-given rights to every individual”…
Another of the experts is Reverend Peter Marshall, who heads his own Christian ministry and preaches that Hurricane Katrina and defeat in the Vietnam war were God’s punishment for sexual promiscuity and tolerance of homosexuals. Marshall recommended that children be taught about the “motivational role” of the Bible and Christianity in establishing the original colonies that later became the US…
Dan Quinn of the Texas Freedom Network, which describes itself as a “counter to the religious right”, called the recommendations “troubling”. “I don’t think anyone disputes that faith played a role in our history. But it’s a stretch to say that it played the role described by David Barton and Peter Marshall. They’re absurdly unqualified to be considered experts. It’s a very deceptive and devious way to distort the curriculum in our public schools,” he said.
Not that being biased and unqualified means much to American politicians – Texas flavor or otherwise.
Curiouser and curiouser.
Apple contractor Foxconn has said that it has suspended a security official after the death of a Chinese worker.
Sun Danyong, 25, reported a missing Iphone 4G phone prototype and was beaten by Foxconn employees who were terrified of the wrath of Steve Jobs.
His house was illegally searched and Sun’s body was found at the bottom of his multi-story apartment block.
Initial reports in China, quoting Foxconn, reported the death as a suicide. However once police started investigating the scene the language in the official press swiftly changed to say “apparent suicide”.
Chinese coppers are apparently examining CCTV footage of the death of Danyong which should give them a few clues.

In comments on blogsites, some Apple fanboys have looked at the story and said it is interesting because it shows that Apple has a new Iphone 4G prototype in the works.Others have dismissed reports of the death, saying that it was all a front by the Microsoft inspired press to cast a shadow over Apple’s wonderful second quarter results.

Three years after mandating that residents get health insurance and requiring employers, insurers and taxpayers to chip in, Massachusetts has yet to control soaring costs that are eating up half its budget. So it’s considering an equally radical idea: changing the way doctors and hospitals are paid to reward results.
As Washington wrestles with the idea of overhauling the nation’s health care system, the Bay State offers an object lesson in how to do it in stages. It’s an approach favored by state officials but rejected by the Obama administration, which is intent on addressing coverage, cost and quality all at once.
Massachusetts dealt with coverage first: just 2.6% of state residents remain uninsured, compared with more than 15% nationally. That’s due in part to the 2006 law, which said most residents must get insurance, most employers must help provide it, and most taxpayers must help pay for it.

Using Massachusetts as a partial model, President Obama is trying to tackle even more difficult coverage, cost and quality problems all at once. The president seeks to extend insurance to up to 46 million people without it. At the same time, he wants to slow the growth of Medicare and Medicaid, now projected to rise from 5% of the nation’s economy to more than 17% by 2080.Still, Massachusetts offers lessons for national policymakers as they debate the biggest change in health care delivery since Medicare and Medicaid were created nearly a half century ago:

The FDA is likely to approve 2009 H1N1 swine flu vaccines before trial data can prove their safety and effectiveness against the virus.
Approving a vaccine without safety and immunogenicity data is not uncommon, FDA officials said during a daylong meeting of the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee.
The committee met to hear updates on H1N1 trials from the FDA, NIH, and the five companies that are applying for FDA approval of pandemic H1N1 vaccines.
In fact, the FDA approves seasonal influenza vaccines every year using its “strain change” process, in which it doesn’t require vaccine manufacturers to provide safety and efficacy data.
What is different about how the FDA is likely to handle approval for a vaccine for pandemic H1N1, however, is that the agency doesn’t normally approve vaccines while major clinical trials of safety and immunogenicity are ongoing.

In the past, without the Interwebitubes and other media, would crackpots like the birthers ever get so widely reported?

The white police sergeant criticized by President Barack Obama for arresting black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. in his Massachusetts home is a police academy expert on racial profiling.
Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley has taught a class on racial profiling for five years at the Lowell Police Academy after being hand-picked for the job by former police Commissioner Ronny Watson, who is black, said Academy Director Thomas Fleming.
“I have nothing but the highest respect for him as a police officer. He is very professional and he is a good role model for the young recruits in the police academy,” Fleming told The Associated Press on Thursday.
The course, called “Racial Profiling,” teaches about different cultures that officers could encounter in their community “and how you don’t want to single people out because of their ethnic background or the culture they come from,” Fleming said.

Journalist Files Charges against WHO and UN for Bioterrorism and Intent to Commit Mass Murder — If anyone thinks that Adam Curry, myself and NoAgenda go off the deep-end with wild ideas, then read this one. This girl takes it very seriously.
Using the “swine flu” as a pretext, the defendants have preplanned the mass murder of the U.S. population by means of forced vaccination. They have installed an extensive network of FEMA concentration camps and identified mass grave sites, and they have been involved in devising and implementing a scheme to hand power over the U.S. to an international crime syndicate that uses the UN and WHO as a front for illegal racketeering influenced organized crime activities, in violation of the laws that govern treason.
She further charges that the complex of pharmaceutical companies consisting of Baxter, Novartis and Sanofi Aventis are part of a foreign-based dual purpose bioweapons program, financed by this international criminal syndicate and designed to implement mass murder to reduce the world’s population by more than 5 billion people in the next ten years. Their plan is to spread terror to justify forcing people to give up their rights, and to force mass quarantine in FEMA camps. The houses, companies and farms and lands of those who are killed will be up for grabs by this syndicate.
By eliminating the population of North America, the international elite gain access to the region’s natural resources such as water and undeveloped oil lands. And by eliminating the U.S. and its democratic constitution by subsuming it under a North American Union, the international crime group will have total control over North America.

The FBI this morning made dozens of arrests in a money laundering and corruption probe. Those arrested include 9th District Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt, R-Ocean, and some unidentified rabbis from Brooklyn, Deal and the Elberon section of Long Branch, sources said.
Van Pelt, 45, was elected to the state Assembly in November 2007 and started serving in January 2008. He also was mayor of Waretown from 1998 until last year…
Also arrested were Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, Secaucus Mayor Denis Elwell, Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Baldini, Jersey City Council President Mario Vega and other officials from Hudson County, sources said.
The probe also involves international trafficking in body parts, sources said.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says approximately 30 arrests have occurred in the two-track investigation.
Some of this is almost too outlandish to comprehend.
