SACARAMENTO, Calif. — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday will order 224 California National Guard troops to the border with Mexico, fulfilling an earlier commitment to President Barack Obama.

In May, Obama launched a plan to deploy 1,200 National Guard troops to the southwest border, alarmed by a tide of smuggled drugs and immigrants and pummeled politically over illegal immigration.

Schwarzenegger earlier pledged California’s full cooperation with federal initiatives to secure the border and attack the narcotics trade. “This is just the beginning,” Schwarzenegger said last month. “We must find a more permanent solution to our broken immigration system.” Schwarzenegger has long supported a larger military presence along the border in San Diego and Imperial counties, quickly endorsing previous buildups President George W. Bush.

In the order to be released Friday morning, the governor urged his adjutant general to “use volunteers to the maximum extent possible.”

So let me get this straight, Obama is concerned about California’s border, but doesn’t give a shit about Arizona? This doesn’t make a damn bit of sense to me. And what happened to “our borders are quite secure ” that California Congressman Bonehead was spewing the other day? Are we supposed to boycott California? Will Californian’s boycott themselves?

TorrentFreak is reporting that a company, Blogetery, that hosted about 73,000 blogs, has been shut down by US authorities. Details are, admittedly, sketchy at this point, but the entire site has been taken down, and the company’s ISP claims that they had to terminate the account immediately due to the “request of law enforcement officials, due to material hosted on the server.” The ISP also claimed:

“this was not a typical case, in which suspension and notification would be the norm. This was a critical matter brought to our attention by law enforcement officials. We had to immediately remove the server.”

That seems odd. If there was problematic content from some users, why not just take down that content or suspend those users. Taking down all 73,000 blogs seems… excessive. TorrentFreak speculates that this may be a part of the recent Homeland Security efforts to shut down file sharing site, and points to some evidence that there were at least a few Blogetery blogs that shared copyrighted works. However, no one’s talking, and the ISP seems spooked, saying that it’s “serious”:

Seems like overkill to me.

To alleviate iPhone 4 antenna problems, Apple will give free bumper cases to everyone who bought or will buy the phone through September 30. For people who already bought a bumper case, Apple will refund the cost. Users who are still unsatisfied can return the phone, with or without a case, for a full refund within 30 days. Apple CEO Steve Jobs made the announcement at a hasily-called press conference this morning.

An online application will go live on Apple’s website next week, where iPhone 4 owners will be able to choose a free bumper case from a variety of vendors.

Jobs stressed that the iPhone 4 reception issues are common among smartphones. On the iPhone 4, occur when the phone is held over its lower left-hand corner, blocking the external antenna. Nonetheless, Jobs said, he wants to keep customers happy, hence the free cases and full refund.

If you listened to the press conference, it sounded like “take the case and quit bothering me”. If it were me, I would get a full refund, then wait till they have a fix, then buy an Android. For now you can view the news conference here.

Since the Vietnam War ended and the effects of Agent Orange have become more apparent, many are beginning to look back at the effect it had on the people of Vietnam.

“I was born without legs and missing one hand,” said Tran Thi Hoan.

It is because of America’s chemical war against her people in the jungles of Vietnam that Tran is in this condition. She is a victim of Agent Orange, second generation.

“Lots of people are worse than me.”

Tran is one of many. Her story represents millions living in the shadows of a lasting legacy.

These children will never live a normal life; their deformities are physical signs of human decay. Although their parents were not even born until after the Vietnam War, 18 million gallons of the toxic herbicide, sprayed through the jungles of South Vietnam, is still penetrating the DNA of those born today.

“There are millions and millions of victims still alive and are suffering from illnesses and from cancers,” said Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong, the Director General of Ngoc Tam Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Dr. Nguyen is Tran’s doctor and accompanied Tran to testify on Capitol Hill.

The US government has acknowledged a connection between Agent Orange and the health defects and ailments that continue to plague the lives of Vietnam War veterans for generations. But the US has refused to make the same link for the millions of Vietnamese War victims whose lives have been devastated as a result of Agent Orange.

This is why delegations are here in Washington following a report issued by lawmakers, scientists and doctors calling on the US government to own up to its Agent Orange legacy in Vietnam today.

Talk about beefy: Three meat patties, three slices of cheese.

The fast-food world has proof positive that size matters: a foot-long cheeseburger.

A cheeseburger sold as a foot-long sandwich, with three burgers and three cheese slices, is being tested at 50 Carl’s Jr. restaurants in Southern California and 50 Hardee’s units in Indiana. That’s the same chain that introduced the world to the 1,400-calorie Monster Burger and the Monster Breakfast Sandwich, with 47 grams of fat.

The move comes at a time fast-food chains are focused on concocting more items intriguingly low in price but large in size. This summer, there’s serious foot-long-on-the-cheap mania.

The Carl’s foot-long fetches $4 without lettuce and tomatoes, $4.50 with.

If she said I could do her but she’d have to kill me after, I’d still do it. Makes me want to join the KGB.  Here’s the story.

What kind of career options are open to a pretty young Russian spy like Anna Chapman now that she has been busted by the FBI and deported from the United States? With her Facebook photos splashed on tabloid front pages across the world, espionage is probably out. But Chapman—known in Russia by her maiden name, Anna Kushchenko—could have a national political career ahead of her in Russia. She is already a local hero in her hometown of Volgograd (formerly known as Stalingrad), where a Kremlin-backed youth party last week called on the local mayor to make her an honored citizen. While Chapman and 10 other accused spies were in jail in the United States, Volgograd’s official newspaper also held a songwriting contest to provide “moral support for our people,” says organizer Sergei Onishenko, “We think of her as our hero.” The winning song, a catchy ballad, includes the line, “You have not been broken by jail. You gave away none of our secrets.”

The lobbying for the future of financial reform doesn’t end when Mr. Obama signs the law. In fact, it could be just beginning, as regulators and congressional overseers get down to the business of writing the high-stakes rules.

“This bill represents the most significant overhaul of the financial system since the 1930s. But serious work remains: the proof of the bill’s worth will come not from what is written in the bill, but how the regulators interpret the bill, write the rules and then enforce them,” says John Taylor, president and CEO of the National Community Reinvestment Coalition. “Based on the job they did for the past decade, I will believe reform is here when I see it.”

“By delegating so much to the regulators, Congress is inviting everyone interested in the outcome to make more campaign contributions, as they intervene in the regulatory process to influence the regulators,” says Thomas Ferguson, a professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. “Nothing is settled. It’s a gold mine for members of Congress.”

The votes are in. By a tally of 60-38, the Senate voted to end debate on the final version of financial reform legislation, A final vote on the Dodd-Frank bill that emerged from the conference committee reconciling the House and Senate versions of the proposed law later today is a mere formality. The President will then sign it and the bill will become the law of the land.

It will be years before we can evaluate whether the bill is a success or not. Perhaps the most optimistic way to view it is as merely a first step towards real reform. But any further progress will be slow, especially if the GOP makes significant gains in the House and Senate this November. Liberals may not like the Dodd-Frank bill, but the vast majority of Senate Republicans simply despise it.

Understand that the Republican Party – whether controlled by traditional American conservatives, which it is not, or nutball chickenhawks – is 100% beholden to the most reactionary Wall Street ideologues.

The Democrats who think that the bill won’t prevent another crisis believe it is too weak. Any improvements that would have made the bill stronger would have been even more vociferously opposed by Republicans. McConnell’s complaint about 2300 pages of new regulations skips merrily over the reason why new rules are necessary — because the country just went through the worst financial crisis in three generations.

The current crop of Senate Republicans are sticking to the same old story line they’ve been pushing since the 1970s: Regulation is bad. Their awesome pigheadedness demonstrates a remarkable effort to be consistent in the face of all evidence provided by actual reality. The best thing about the passage of bank reform is that these troglodytes failed to stop it.

The Chinese government has abruptly shut down dozens of blogs in its latest attempt to control the growing tide of social networking, according to the Associated Press.

The crackdown, which apparently surfaced Wednesday, has affected both blogs and shorter microblogs, which have become a popular method to spread the word and rally support about sensitive issues there. The move has led to many blogs disappearing from Sohu, home to popular microblogs by outspoken writers and lawyers, said the AP, quoting several bloggers whose posts had been shut down.
Sina is one of several sites hosting blogs shut down in China.

A lawyer named Pu Zhiqiang told the AP that he had been writing a new post when he suddenly discovered that his blog couldn’t open. A legal expert named Xu Zhiyong also reported that his blog was closed. Another blogger Yao Yuan said that he knew of at least 61 blogs on Sohu that are now blocked, according to the AP.

Raoul Moat

Cnet News

Raoul Moat used to be the doorman at a nightclub and became famous in the U.K. during the past two weeks because he shot and wounded his ex-girlfriend, shot and killed her new boyfriend, and shot and blinded a policeman.

He then went on the run before, apparently, shooting himself during a stand-off with the police.

His case has aroused many strong feelings in the U.K., many critical, some sympathetic. After his death, a Facebook group was created called “R.I.P. Raoul Moat You Legend!” This quickly attracted more than 36,000 fans, although not all can be said to be entirely sympathetic toward Moat.

Still, given that British Prime Minster, David Cameron declared: “I cannot understand any wave, however small, of public sympathy for this man. There should be sympathy for his victims and the havoc he wreaked in that community. There should be no sympathy for him,” some members of the British Parliament are suggesting that Facebook should remove the Moat fan page.

People are really weird.
