A Chinese man, who had half of his body amputated after being run over by a truck, has amazed surgeons with his recovery. Peng Shuilin, 37, spent nearly two years in hospital in Shenzhen, southern China, undergoing a series of operations to re-route nearly every major organ or system inside his body.

Now Peng – who opened his own cut-price supermarket called the Half Man-Half Price Store – has survived so well he’s being used as a role model for other amputees.

At just 2ft 7ins tall, he gets around in a wheelchair and gives lectures on recovering from disability.

“We’ve just given him a check up and he is fitter than most men his age. He is amazing and the only person in the world to survive having so much of his body amputated,” said Bujie Hospital vice president Lin Liu.

“He had good care but his secret is his cheerfulness – nothing ever gets him down,” he added.

Kind of puts things in perspective.

CAUTION GRAPHIC VIOLENCE

Reader/Listener Anatoly N. writes the following note regarding the banning of this game in Russia:
John, please watch this and tell me this game should be available in Russia. Bear in mind that in Russia we don’t have age differentiated rating for games & movies it’s our fault, i know. Also picture that game’s action is taking place in “US airport named after Osama Bin Laden”. But at 1:27 in the clip it says “Zakhaev International Airport, Moscow, Russia”. There is no such airport. It’s obviously named after Akhmed Zakayev the Chechen ex Prime Minister accused by Russia of terrorism. And even if we don’t care about this crap, this scene should not be in the game anyway. It’s too cruel.

This scene is ridiculously sick, I agree. But if you can actually watch it, it makes you cringe because there are too many airports that are crawling with lots of machine-gun toting security forces. Kind of creepy to think about what would happen if one went berserk.

They want to start off with soft sells and travel related items, but you know it won’t stop there if this is successful. Imagine hard sells on insurance, ShamWows and, of course, Viagra for those thinking of joining the Mile High Club.

Air travelers in the United States are already paying for sandwiches and drinks, pillows and headsets. So, as airlines look for more ways to help their bottom lines, they have started asking the next logical question: Why not sell limousine services or even tickets to Broadway shows?
[…]
Other airlines declined to talk on the record about their plans, but nearly all the major carriers acknowledged that they were working on expanding retail offerings.
[…]
“Look at what’s going on in airports,” he said. “Anytime you have customers who are captive, who have nothing better to do, they’ll shop.”

The technology making the onboard sales possible is being provided by GuestLogix, a Canadian company that sells the credit card readers and sales software to the airline industry. A brochure promoting its products describes onboard retail as unique because “operators are able to lock their doors with their shoppers still inside.”

In an interview, Brett Proud executive vice president of global sales and client support for GuestLogix, described the jetliner as “a retail space that is probably the biggest retail opportunity ever uncovered,” adding, “It’s huge.”

Tea partiers punk’d into supporting removal of white people from US – The Raw Story — Ahem. To be fair this could happen at any rally … maybe … bwahahahahaha! Haven’t laughed this hard since Clayton Bigsby.

Ok. It appears that this video and The Raw Story article are a tad manipulative and that the baggers may have caught on before the end. Clearly they have a semblance of intelligence. Still pretty funny as a prank, even if the speakers argument is undercooked.

A speaker at an anti-immigration rally in Minneapolis this past weekend got the crowd to support more than just the deportation of all illegal immigrants — he got them cheering for the eviction of all European-descended immigrants to America who “stole this land through genocide and ethnic cleansing.”
[…]
“In Minneapolis where I’m from, we have a huge immigrant population that has been causing a number of problems,” Erickson began. “With the economy in recession and so many people laid off and unable to find work, immigrants should not be competing for the few jobs that are open. It’s just not fair to the folks who have a claim to this country and have a right to be here.”
[…]
“Let’s send these European immigrants back where they came from,” he said to wild cheers. “We need to send every one of them back home. … They stole this land through genocide and ethnic cleansing.”
[…]
“Erickson” walked off the stage leading the crowd in a loud chant of “Columbus go home! Columbus go home!”

Huffington Post – Nov. 16, 2009:

Former Alaska Governor lashed out at the Associated Press Sunday for doing a fact-check on her memoir, “Going Rogue.”

“Amazingly, but not surprisingly, the AP somehow nabbed a copy of the book before it was released,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “They’re now erroneously reporting on the book’s contents and are repeating many of the same things they spewed during the campaign and afterwards. We’ve heard 11 writers are engaged in this opposition research, er, “fact checking” research!”

The AP reported that Palin’s account often contradicted her record as well as current events. Her depiction of the McCain campaign is also frequently at odds with internal campaign emails.

Does anyone else remember the old days when journalists were expected to fact-check stories?

Crazy Days and Nights: Bill Gates & Strippers – Who Knew — So much for anonymity at these joints. This is pretty funny anyway.

When I think of Bill Gates I somehow don’t picture him heading over to Scores and getting lap dances all night. I guess I was wrong though because Bill loves the strippers and is a really big tipper. Good for him. The former owner of Scores strip club is in the process of writing a book and in it he gives some scoop about some of the clients who have walked through the doors of the strip club.

Political talk shows have played and replayed the moment from the second day of Obama’s week-long Asia tour, which set the blogosphere on fire and chat show tongues wagging.

“I don’t know why President Obama thought that was appropriate. Maybe he thought it would play well in Japan. But it’s not appropriate for an American president to bow to a foreign one,” said conservative pundit William Kristol speaking on the Fox News Sunday program, adding that the gesture bespoke a United States that has become weak and overly-deferential under Obama.

Another conservative voice, Bill Bennett, said on CNN’s “State of the Union” program: “It’s ugly. I don’t want to see it.”

“We don’t defer to emperors. We don’t defer to kings or emperors. The president of the United States — this coupled with so many apologies from the United States — is just another thing,” said Bennett.bush_kiss
Some conservative critics juxtaposed the image of Obama with one of former US vice president Dick Cheney, who greeted the emperor in 2007 with a firm handshake but no bow.
“I’ll bet if you look at pictures of world leaders over 20 years meeting the emperor in Japan, they don’t bow,” Kristol said.

Idiots.

Scouts banned from carrying knives – Times Online — This of course is a continuation of the march of fascism in the UK.

Scouts have been told to be slightly less prepared than usual. Penknives may have formed as much part of the scouting experience as badges and campfires, but according to advice from the Scout Association they must no longer be brought on camping trips, except when there is a “specific” need. Modern Britain’s knife culture, including the rise in fatal stabbings, has been cited by troop leaders — although some have countered that the code contradicts the tradition that Scouts are to be trusted for their honour. The advice, published in the official in-house magazine, Scouting, says that confusion over the legality of carrying a knife in public has made it necessary to revise the rules.

The drug companies feel (and have a pill for) your pain. They just don’t want to share in it.

Even as drug makers promise to support Washington’s health care overhaul by shaving $8 billion a year off the nation’s drug costs after the legislation takes effect, the industry has been raising its prices at the fastest rate in years.

In the last year, the industry has raised the wholesale prices of brand-name prescription drugs by about 9 percent, according to industry analysts. That will add more than $10 billion to the nation’s drug bill, which is on track to exceed $300 billion this year. By at least one analysis, it is the highest annual rate of inflation for drug prices since 1992.

The drug trend is distinctly at odds with the direction of the Consumer Price Index, which has fallen by 1.3 percent in the last year.

Drug makers say they have valid business reasons for the price increases. Critics say the industry is trying to establish a higher price base before Congress passes legislation that tries to curb drug spending in coming years.

Former Vice President Al Gore’s global-warming speech Saturday night at Mizner Park drew about a thousand attendees, as well as more than 200 loud protesters.

Stationed outside the Mizner Park Amphitheater, the protesters jeered at Gore as he took the podium and at those walking into the open-air venue to listen to the speech.

“This is the most dangerous crisis we’ve ever faced,” Gore said of climate change. He spoke over a chorus of boos from protesters, who were monitored by at least a dozen uniformed city police officers.

Many of the protesters were with the groups Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow and South Florida Tea Party, the latter of which feels that Gore’s views will eventually lead to increased taxes and flawed business legislation.

The protesters carried drums, bullhorns and posters. One read “Practice what you preach,” accusing Gore of not living a green lifestyle. Another poster read “The masses follow the asses,” depicting the protesters’ opinion that Gore’s message is not backed by scientific evidence.
