On Point – Sept. 15, 2009:

Brenda Voydatch has battled her ex-husband, Martin Kurowski, over the education of their daughter Amanda since she began home-schooling her in first grade. Last month, a Laconia (N.H.) family court judge adopted a marital master’s recommendation that it would be in the girl’s best interests to go to public school in the 2009-10 academic year.

“[T]he Court is guided … by the premise that a child requires academic, social, cultural, and physical interaction with a variety of experiences, people, concepts, and surroundings in order to grow into an adult who can make intelligent decisions about how to achieve a productive and satisfying life,” the master, Michael Garner, said in his order.

Kurowski had testified that “exposure to other points of view will decrease Amanda’s rigid adherence to her mother’s religious beliefs.”

This young Ukrainian girl tells an entire story by pushing around sand on a table. She uses nothing but sand and her hands to create these images.

Kseniya Simonova is a Ukrainian artist who just won the “Ukraine’s Got Talent” competition. She uses a giant light box, dramatic music, imagination and “sand painting” skills to interpret the invasion and occupation of her country from 1941-1945.

Paris: pervert capital of the world? – Telegraph

Paris may be the city of love but it is also the capital of perverts. To experience this, you simply need to be female and walk down the street. You’re almost guaranteed to get your daily dose of dirty old men and if you live on the Left Bank, you really don’t need to go far.

In the space of a few weeks, I have been propositioned by at least a dozen men. As I wait to cross the road, at Saint Michel, a man old enough to be my grandfather leans over towards me and whispers seductively in my ear: “Jolies fesses” (nice bum).

I’d advise you to read this column with the intent of reading the comments that follow it. This is some hilarious material! Good info for world travelers too.

WASHINGTON Cyber criminals are increasingly targeting small and medium-sized businesses that don’t have the resources to keep updating their computer security, according to federal authorities.

Many of the attacks are being waged by organized cyber groups that are based abroad, and they are able to steal not only credit card numbers, but personal information — including Social Security numbers — of the card holders, said Michael Merritt, assistant director of the U.S. Secret Service’s office of investigations.

Merritt, in testimony prepared for the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, said that as larger companies have taken on more sophisticated computer network protections, cyber criminals have adapted and gone after the smaller businesses who do not have such high-level security.

I don’t give out my regular credit card numbers any more. I use a single use credit card generated through PayPal, plus I have a digital device to log on so that, even if someone else has my password, they can’t log on without the digital number.

A Pew Research Center study indicates that Americans’ trust of the media is the lowest it’s been since at least 1985, the first year that the study took readings. What role has the rise of the Web played in this trend? Instead of a handful of trusted national dailies and a few TV stations, news consumers now have a wider variety of sources — and many more outlets for media criticism.

The graph that accompanies a Pew Research Center survey on media credibility released Monday shows blue lines heading south: Now just 29 percent of Americans surveyed believe the media gets the facts right, and a scant 18 percent think news organizations are truly objective.

While “Public Evaluations of the News Media, 1985-2009” does not focus on technology’s impact on media, those downward trends may intersect with rising chart lines for the use of Web sites and blogs as news sources. Along with that comes better access to information for pointing out journalists’ errors and overall critiques of the media.

Another obstacle for mainstream media: After years of conservatives and Republicans leading the press attack pack in terms of accuracy and bias, now the other side of the political aisle is joining that chorus. Pew results show 59 percent of Democrats now think that press reports are often inaccurate, and 67 percent say the media chooses sides on issues more often than not.

LOS ANGELES — Police in Los Angeles are offering a $1 million reward for information leading to the recovery of a multimillion dollar collection of original Andy Warhol artwork stolen from a West Los Angeles home. The family’s longtime nanny arrived at the home Sept. 3 to find the color screenprints missing from the walls. She immediately went to a neighbor’s house and called police.

Eleven artworks, each 40 inches square, were stolen. Among the stolen items were images of O.J. Simpson, Muhammad Ali, soccer star Pele and tennis champion Chris Evert. A portrait of Weisman was also taken.

It’s not known exactly how much the collection is worth, but Weisman tried to sell it in 2002 for $3 million.

Meh…I’ll give ’em five bucks for the lot.

Honesty is not going to get you the house,” a loan counselor at the offices told two activists posing as a mortgage-seeking pimp and prostitute.

“You can’t say what you do for a living.”

ACORN workers in two other cities, Baltimore and Washington, DC, had already fallen hooker, line and sinker for the hidden-camera sting operation by two conservative activists. Four ACORN employees have been fired as a result of the earlier videos, and last Friday the Census Bureau severed its ties with the group, whose members had been hired to do canvassing during the 2010 census.

Mayor Bloomberg spoke out on the controversy today.

“Prostitution is illegal in this state and I don’t know why they would — why an organization like ACORN, who’s trying to encourage voter turnout and voter registration, why they’re getting involved in any of that stuff,” Bloomberg said. “But clearly it’s not appropriate and they shouldn’t have been doing it. Whether they broke a law or not I don’t know. You’ll have to talk to the legal (authorities).”

I smell the makings of another reality show. Damn these people are stupid!

A 107-year-old Malaysian woman says she is ready to marry for the 23rd time because she fears her current drug addict husband might leave her for a younger woman, a report said Monday.

Wook Kundor made headlines four years ago when she married Muhammad Noor Che Musa, a man 70 years her junior in northern Terengganu state, with pictures of the couple’s wedding splashed across regional newspapers.

Even if some people don’t like what the Democrats are currently doing, are the Republicans in any shape to lead anything if they should win? Do voters really want the same party back in power that gave us the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the economic crisis, and all the rest?

Despite sweeping Democratic successes in the past two national elections, continuing job losses and President Barack Obama’s slipping support could lead to double-digit losses for the party in next year’s congressional races and may even threaten their House control.

Fifty-four new Democrats were swept into the House in 2006 and 2008, helping the party claim a decisive majority as voters soured on a Republican president and embraced Obama’s message of hope and change. Many of the new Democrats are in districts carried by Republican John McCain in last year’s presidential contest; others are in traditional swing districts that have proved tough for either party to hold.

From New Hampshire to Nevada, House Democrats also will be forced to defend votes on Obama’s $787 billion economic recovery package and on energy legislation viewed by many as a job killer in an already weak economy.

A class act he is not, but South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson’s boorish behavior during President Obama’s speech on health reform more than earned him his 15 minutes of infamy.

It is understandable that he chose – or as some suggested, was told – to bellow “You lie!” when the President was explaining for the umpteenth time that undocumented immigrants would not be covered under health care legislation. After all, Wilson’s extreme anti-immigrant positions are well known.

His outburst, for which he has half-heartedly apologized, not only exposed Wilson for the uncouth nativist he is, but made clear that immigration is still very much one of the Republican Party’s war horses.

“Congressman Joe Wilson’s outburst is not only a massive breach of decorum,” said Frank Sharry, executive director of America’s Voice, “but the latest example of how race-baiting and immigrant bashing have become standard fare for hard-right elements of the Republican Party.”

One has to wonder if Wilson and his ilk are intent on committing political suicide – and in the process taking down with them the entire GOP – or if their prejudices are so deep that they just cannot help themselves.

Ironically, after all is said and done, Joe (You lie!) Wilson’s outburst could go down in history as the death knell for the most reactionary and extremist wing of the Republican Party.

Serena Williams walked toward the line judge, screaming, cursing and shaking a ball in the official’s direction, threatening to “shove it down” her throat.

On match point in the U.S. Open semifinals Saturday night, defending champion Williams was penalized a point for unsportsmanlike conduct — a bizarre, ugly finish that gave a 6-4, 7-5 upset victory to unseeded, unranked Kim Clijsters.

(CBS) Jon Krakauer’s newest book reveals how the Bush administration turned the friendly fire death of Pat Tillman in Afghanistan into a propaganda victory. “Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman” follows the story of Tillman’s life through his death at the hands of his platoon to the smoke and mirrors orchestrated by the Pentagon and White House, reports ABC News and the LA Times.newt12100tillman

Krakauer includes passages from Tillman’s diary that show a keen awareness of the propaganda that would follow his death. While on his first mission as an Army Ranger, Tillman was sent to rescue Pvt. Jessica Lynch, a soldier who had been captured by militants in Iraq. Lynch was falsely characterized by the Pentagon as a military hero who had gone down with guns blazing. She later testified that she had not fired a single bullet.

“This mission will be a P.O.W. rescue, a woman named Jessica Lynch,” Tillman wrote. “As awful as I feel for the fear she must face, and admire the courage I’m sure she’s showing, I do believe this to be a big Public Relations stunt. Do not mistake me, I wish everyone in trouble to be rescued, but sending this many folks for a single low ranking soldier screams of media blitz.”

Disgusting.
