Woman Lights Herself On Fire Causing Mall Closure – cbs4.com — Let’s hope this does not become a trend! And where are all the camera phone pics of this event?

Witness Jose Morales described what he saw. “Whatever she threw on herself, it looked like movie, Hollywood stunt stuff,” he said. “She kept on walking not screaming not nothing.”Meanwhile, mall officials said fire and police officials forced them to shut down the mall.”The mall is closed until the fire department and police release the order and as we clean up,” Myrna Lee, assistant property manager.According to the newspaper, a Good Samaritan pushed the woman to the ground in an attempt to extinguish the fire. Two other people used fire extinguishers to help. The woman ran outside into the parking lot where firefighters found her with third-degree burns on more than 75 percent of her body. Police and fire officials are looking into a motive.

The couple had set the timer on their camera while posing at a lakeside in a national park in Canada.

Just as they were about to be captured on camera the cheeky squirrel popped up in the foreground and stole the show.

The picture was taken at the side of the stunning Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park, Canada.

Mrs Brandts said: “We had our camera set up on some rocks and were getting ready to take the picture when this curious little ground squirrel appeared, became intrigued with the sound of the focusing camera and popped right into our shot.”

The picture was submitted to the website of America’s National Geographic magazine.

‘It was a once in a lifetime moment – we were laughing about this little guy for days!’ said Mrs Brandts.

“Shopped or real. You have to admit it’s…it’s just so darn cute!

The smoke is getting thick and the mirrors are blinding while the important question is left undiscussed: should we all move to a beach in the Bahamas until this crap is over?

On one side is Sarah Palin writing on her Facebook page and Sen. Chuck Grassley, both using misrepresentation and FUD instead of discussing solutions to the real problems that exist in the current system.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is warning that Americans should be worried about an “end of life” provision in the House health care bill.

“In the House bill, there is counseling for end of life,” Grassley said Wednesday during a town hall in Winterset, Iowa. “You have every right to fear. You shouldn’t have counseling at the end of life, you should have done that 20 years before. Should not have a government run plan to decide when to pull the plug on grandma.”

On the other is Howard Dean who wants retribution against Democrats who question the President’s idiotic mess of a health plan and don’t vote for it.

Former Democratic National Committee chair Howard Dean fired one of the clearest warning shots at hesitant Democratic lawmakers on Thursday, insisting that if the party was unable to produce a health care bill with a public plan, there would be electoral consequences.

“I do think there will be primaries as the result of all this, if the bill doesn’t pass with a public option,” Dean said, in a phone interview with the Huffington Post.

The former Vermont governor added the caveat that he thought “cooler heads” would ultimately prevail and that a government run option for insurance coverage would be passed. But his remarks are some of the most threatening yet to be directed at Democrats from within the party.

It was the television show with the highest ratings in Manaus, the lawless Amazon city, and somehow its breathless reporters always seemed to get to the scene of a shocking crime first.

The show’s host, Wallace Souza, was a former police officer whose fame as a TV host helped to get him elected three times to the State Assembly with a record number of votes.

But now police think they know how Mr Souza’s show got its scoops: they claim that he organised at least five murders to boost the ratings and further his political ambitions in the process.

Mr Souza’s son, Rafael, has been in prison since May on charges of homicide, drug trafficking and illegal possession of arms, and Brazil is now gripped by the case of the TV presenter who may have gone too far.

Cripes! A Euro-mime.

The French and German economies both grew by 0.3% between April and June, bringing to an end year-long recessions in Europe’s largest economies.

Stronger exports and consumer spending, as well as government stimulus packages, contributed to the growth.

The data came as a surprise, with few analysts expecting Germany and France to start to recover so soon. But economic activity in the eurozone fell by 0.1%, showing the region as a whole is still in recession.

It was the fifth consecutive quarter of economic contraction in the eurozone, but was a marked improvement on the 2.5% drop recorded in the first three months of the year…

The UK government’s claims that it is a global recession maybe rings a little less true in terms of the mood music from each country over the last couple of days.

We’ve had the French finance minister hailing the figures as a sign of recovery and more optimistic noises from the US Federal Reserve.

Yet at the same time the governor of the Bank of England has said the recovery in the UK will be slow and protracted.

I’m not going to waste time on market responses. That’s still a day-to-day crapshoot.

Nice to see things are getting better somewhere in traditional measure.

Palm has responded to claims that its recently-launched Pre smartphone abuses owners’ privacy.

The company issued a statement after one owner discovered his phone was sending data every day back to Palm. The information included the current location of the phone and how long each application was used for.

In its statement, Palm said it took users’ privacy “seriously” and said it gave phone owners ways to turn features on and off.

The discovery was made by software developer and Pre owner Joey Hess, who found that his phone was reporting his location over a secure connection back to Palm. It also sent back information about application crashes – even those not seen by a Pre owner.

Also in the daily update sent to Palm was a list of the third party applications installed on the phone.

In its privacy policy, Palm does explain that it will gather geographical data to help with location-based services. However, commentators were puzzled as to why it needed to gather so much data and why owners were not told about what it had gathered…

Palm issued a statement about Mr Hess’ discovery and said it “offers users ways to turn data collecting services on and off”.

It added: “Our privacy policy is like many policies in the industry and includes very detailed language about potential scenarios in which we might use a customer’s information, all toward a goal of offering a great user experience.”

The sort of discovery that keeps some geeks in perpetual orgasm – and makes the rest of us yawn. But, at least it keeps the corporate mavens on their toes.

Marathon Man

Massachusetts health authorities took the unprecedented step yesterday of deputizing dentists, paramedics, and pharmacists to help administer vaccines against both the seasonal flu and the novel swine strain expected to make a return visit in the fall.

In another emergency measure, regulators directed hospitals and clinics to provide vaccine to all their workers and some volunteers, a move designed to keep the medical workforce robust and prevent doctors and nurses from making their patients sick.

The actions illustrated the intensifying sense of urgency as health authorities, hospital administrators, and clinic executives across the nation confront the prospect of providing hundreds of millions of doses of vaccine against not one but two deadly types of flu in the same season.

“It’s a huge burden of work; there’s no doubt about that,’’ said Dr. Jay Butler, director of the swine flu vaccine task force at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In Massachusetts, disease specialists are expecting to provide up to 9 million flu inoculations within the next few months, three times as many as last flu season, because of the need to give two doses of swine flu vaccine.

In Boston, the city health agency plans to offer shots during the day, night, and weekend. There is a chance that retired health workers will be pressed into service to provide vaccinations to adults and children, with many patients needing three visits for all their inoculations.

Elizabeth Warren Talks Toxic Assets On MSNBC

Elizabeth Warren, the chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel charged with monitoring the bank bailout, appeared on MSNBC [yesterday] morning to talk toxic assets. On Joe Scarborough’s Morning Joe, Warren warned of the hard-to-price assets that are still lingering on many bank’s balance sheets.
[…]
Warren, who’s been leading the call of late to reconcile the shoddy assets weighing down the bank sector, warned of a looming commercial mortgage crisis. And even though Wall Street has steadied itself in recent weeks, smaller banks will likely need more aid, Warren said.
