Here’s an example of that. This right wing nutjob calls me up at 11:05 PM Pacific time May 22, 2009 from Alexandria Virginia (2:05 AM his time) and leaves me two voice mail messages. He has his caller ID blocked so he thinks he’s anonymous. I’m guessing that he probably read my letters to the editor that were published in the Washington Times. He calls twice. Here’s what he has to say:
I figured out who this nutcase is. You can get all the details here about how you can get the caller ID of nutcases who use ID blocking.

Michio Hoshino, a photographer known for his pictures of bears and other wildlife, was mauled to death by a brown bear on the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia. He was in his mid-40’s and lived in Fairbanks, Alaska.
This is the last photo he took.

This is a very interesting use of Google earth and Google maps. And appropriate for this holiday.
This Memorial Day I would like to share with you a personal project of mine that uses Google Earth to honor the more than 5,700 American and Coalition servicemen and women that have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. I have created a map for Google Earth that will connect you with each of their stories—you can see photos, learn about how they died, visit memorial websites with comments from friends and families, and explore the places they called home and where they died.

NPR– Allen Hoe, 62, served as a combat medic in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968.
His son, Nainoa K. Hoe, served as a first lieutenant infantry officer with the Army’s 3rd Battalion in Mosul, Iraq. He died there on Jan. 22, 2005, at the age of 27. On Memorial Day that year, Allen traveled to Washington, D.C., from his home in Honolulu for services being held at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, often referred to as “the wall.” Army nurses returning home from the war were being honored there that day.
“I thought it would be great to welcome these young trauma nurses with some special Hawaiian leis,” Hoe says. When he saw Maj. Paula Couglin walking up the path he said, “Here, this is a special gift from me to you.”
Couglin lowered her head so Allen could place the lei on her and saw a button Allen had pinned to his chest. She put her finger on it and said, “I know him.” “How do you know him? He was my son,” Hoe recalls saying. “I was the trauma nurse at the crash unit where he died,” Couglin said. “I will never forget that face.” The two hugged and Couglin cried.
Allen could tell that Couglin was tense. “I want you to know that my son was a warrior,” he told her. “He absolutely recognized all of the risks that were involved.” Couglin decided to tell Hoe something that had been bothering her. It was her job to prepare his son’s body for a last viewing, but she couldn’t get his eyes to close.
Hoe laughed.
“My son would sleep with his eyes partially open,” he told her. “His men … were never certain what they could do when the lieutenant was sleeping, because they never knew if he was sleeping or if he was just awake watching what they
were doing.” Reflecting on the chance encounter, Hoe says, “It was one of those miracles at the wall. It was absolutely remarkable.”
Thanks to all Veterans.

CARROLLTON, OH —A 62-year-old Carrollton area man was found unconscious and unresponsive Thursday morning during an intense search overnight by Carroll County sheriff deputies, an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper and the patrol’s airplane. Two K-9 units, several fire departments and 100 individuals on foot also were involved in the search for the man, who Sheriff Dale Williams said fled his residence on Kensington Rd. after a domestic disturbance call to deputies.
The man, who was treated at the scene by emergency medical technicians, was taken to Aultman Hospital and released Thursday afternoon. Sheriff Sgt. Ron Clapper and firefighters found the man about 1 a.m. after 11 hours of searching in an area just north of Augusta, including Manfull Orchards, where there is a Verizon cell phone tower.
Williams said he attempted to use the man’s cell phone signal to locate him, but the man was behind on his phone bill and the Verizon operator refused to connect the signal unless the sheriff’s department agreed to pay the overdue bill. After some disagreement, Williams agreed to pay $20 on the phone bill in order to find the man. But deputies discovered the man just as Williams was preparing to make arrangements for the payment. The sheriff organized the search party for the man after deputies responded to the domestic call Wednesday at 2:21 p.m. at the Kensington Rd. residence. The sheriff said the caller said the man was destroying the house and breaking windows and other items.
But when deputies arrived they were told the man had fled and had taken several bottles of pills.
“I was more concerned for the person’s life,” Williams said. “It would have been nice if Verizon would have turned on his phone for five or 10 minutes, just long enough to try and find the guy. But they would only turn it on if we agreed to pay $20 of the unpaid bill. Ridiculous.” Williams said he doesn’t know how close the situation was to becoming a tragedy because he’s not a doctor, but he thinks the man’s condition was very serious.
Effective today, the iconic thoroughfare is officially closed to motor vehicles in two key sections of midtown – Herald Square and Times Square. Broadway is now a pedestrian mall from 47th to 42nd Sts. and from 35th to 33rd Sts.
Mayor Bloomberg said he believes the street shutdown will make New York more livable by reducing pollution, cutting down on pedestrian accidents and helping traffic flow more smoothly…
While pedestrians were able to experience it first, the real test of success will come tomorrow when the city reopens for business after the holiday weekend…
Shopkeepers aren’t yet sure what to expect.
Officials will decide by the end of the year whether to make the changes permanent. Other experts insist the new walking space can only have a positive impact on Broadway’s stores.
RTFA, There’s whining – in advance – from the folks you’d expect. Those who think their individual liberty wholly depends on having rubber tires and an engine to provide mobility.
Joy from the rest of the human beings in NYC.
MOBILE, Ala. – A page showing fire, severe weather, and flooding, all disasters that can have an impact on a family, especially children. All of these disasters were featured in a coloring book on the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s website, designed to help children cope with disasters. But one page has parents taking the colors away. It’s an illustration of the World Trade Center Towers in New York. One of the towers has smoke coming out of it while a plane looks to be heading towards the other.
“They like to color happy pictures not pictures like that I don’t think I would like to give my child these kids of pictures to color,” said parent Brandy Greer.
Another parent, who was from New York, couldn’t believe the scene was in something intended for such young minds. She said she thinks the picture might actually scare a child, since most might now understand the horror of 9/11. “I think there could be better solutions, for a small child that’s coloring. How would they color that to be honest? That’s not something I’d put in a coloring book,” she said. She said if you feel your kids need to know about what happened the best way she can think of is how she handled it when 9/11 happened right in her backyard, “To talk to them, that’s the best way to talk to them.”
Just recently, the National FEMA site took the coloring book down. There are others that don’t include anything with 9/11 still on the site.
Is this a case of poor judgment or fear mongering to keep the kiddies in line?
North Carolina lawmakers are pushing to give Apple Inc. a multi-million dollar tax break should the company bring an East Coast computer server farm to the state – an estimated $1 billion investment, according to a state official with knowledge of the recruitment efforts…
While it has been known that North Carolina lawmakers were working on changing tax rules to benefit one company, the name of the outfit has been kept secret.
The House Finance Committee on Thursday altered the proposed tax change so companies could qualify only if they locate in one of North Carolina’s poorest counties, provide health insurance, meet a wage standard, and forego other state grants or tax breaks…The tax breaks could be worth about $46 million in the next decade, assuming the company reaches its $1 billion investment target within nine years of starting, according to a memo by legislative fiscal staffers that does not identify the company. The memo said no current company meets the criteria to receive the tax break and the Commerce Department knows of just one with the potential to qualify.
“It’s very specific to this project,” Luebke said of the tax breaks.
The conditions adopted Thursday, if approved by both legislative chambers and the governor, would push the project from the state’s urbanized corridor connecting Raleigh to Greensboro and Charlotte. In 2007, Google Inc. committed to spending $600 million for a server farm near Lenoir in the western North Carolina foothills. It opened last year…
My, oh my. Apple’s existing server facilities do a truly crappy and underpowered job at handling the traffic they already have. But, this sounds like a Google-level facility.
Whatever do they have in mind?
UPDATE: NC state legislature debated less than a minute – and approved the package.

Liberty University will no longer recognize its campus Democratic Party club because its parent organization stands against the conservative Christian school’s moral principles.
The club, which has about 30 members, will no longer be able to use Liberty’s name, hold on-campus meetings, or be eligible for student activities money.
“I think it does the university a great disservice to stifle one side of the discussion simply because we are Democrats,” said Maria Childress, the club’s adviser and an administrative assistant at the school.
Brian Diaz, president of Liberty’s Democratic club, said he was informed of the school’s decision in a May 15 e-mail.
Liberty has had a College Republicans club for years. The Democratic club formed in October and worked aggressively to elect President Obama.
Everything you know about Iran is wrong, or at least more complicated than you think. Take the bomb. The regime wants to be a nuclear power but could well be happy with a peaceful civilian program (which could make the challenge it poses more complex). What’s the evidence? Well, over the last five years, senior Iranian officials at every level have repeatedly asserted that they do not intend to build nuclear weapons. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has quoted the regime’s founding father, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who asserted that such weapons were “un-Islamic.” […] Now, of course, they could all be lying. But it seems odd for a regime that derives its legitimacy from its fidelity to Islam to declare constantly that these weapons are un-Islamic if it intends to develop them.
Iranians aren’t suicidal. In an interview last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the Iranian regime as “a messianic, apocalyptic cult.” In fact, Iran has tended to behave in a shrewd, calculating manner, advancing its interests when possible, retreating when necessary. […] The argument made by those—including many Israelis for coercive sanctions against Iran is that many in the regime have been squirreling away money into bank accounts in Dubai and Switzerland for their children and grandchildren. These are not actions associated with people who believe that the world is going to end soon.
And so on, with more examples. While Iran may hate the West’s standards and practices, Israel’s paranoia outweighs what may be reality in our planning for the worst. Or is this article wishful thinking?
