But sometimes an apocalypse is required for the world to get in line with your fantasies. Which at least partially explains why so many apocalyptic tales these days seem to be driven by such heavy doses of wishful thinking. Take the sugary, armageddon-flavored nuggets of NBC’s new doomsday hit Revolution. Unlike the cautionary tales scripted by futuristic visionaries like George Orwell or JG Ballard, Revolution feels like a child’s clumsily drawn daydream, one that lands halfway between Dungeons and Dragons and Real Simple magazine.

It’s hard not to feel a rush of yearning for this simple if violent existence. The characters’ goals are concrete and simple: hit the road in search of help or information; subvert your malevolent overlords — local, observable foes, as opposed to the faceless, splintered, omnipresent enemies we increasingly protest; hide your firearms and your American flags from evil outside forces.
The bottom line is we, as a country, a society, and a people, are so fucked up that wiping it all out and starting over has become a hoped for fantasy. Too hard to fix, so time to start over.

Afran explained that although the new provision gives U.S. citizens a right to go to civilian (i.e. Article III) court based on “any [applicable] constitutional rights,” but since there are are no rules in place to exercise this right, detained U.S. citizens currently have no way to gain access to lawyers, family or the court itself once they are detained within the military.“The biggest thing about the [2012] NDAA was that you weren’t getting a trial … Nothing in here says that you’ll make it to an Article III court so it literally does nothing,” Dan Johnson, founder of People Against the NDAA, told BI. “It’s a bunch of words, basically,”
Afran noted that the newest version actually goes further than the NDAA that’s now in effect.
“The new statute actually states that persons lawfully in the U.S. can be detained under the Authorization for the Use of Military Force [AUMF]. The original (the statute we are fighting in court) never went that far,” Afran said. “Therefore, under the guise of supposedly adding protection to Americans, the new statute actually expands the AUMF to civilians in the U.S.”

His visit came as the model that granddaughter Lu Ting and four friends had booked for a photo shoot to promote their online fashion business suddenly canceled, dealing a setback to their new venture.
Who runs the Internet? For now, the answer remains no one, or at least no government, which explains the Web’s success as a new technology. But as of next week, unless the U.S. gets serious, the answer could be the United Nations.
Many of the U.N.’s 193 member states oppose the open, uncontrolled nature of the Internet. Its interconnected global networks ignore national boundaries, making it hard for governments to censor or tax. And so, to send the freewheeling digital world back to the state control of the analog era, China, Russia, Iran and Arab countries are trying to hijack a U.N. agency that has nothing to do with the Internet.
Next week the ITU holds a negotiating conference in Dubai, and past months have brought many leaks of proposals for a new treaty. U.S. congressional resolutions and much of the commentary, including in this column, have focused on proposals by authoritarian governments to censor the Internet. Just as objectionable are proposals that ignore how the Internet works, threatening its smooth and open operations.

If we want to reduce pollution and global warming – what is the biggest single point of change that will actually make a difference? Who is in the best position to affect the environment? That person is the Pope.
If the Pope were to reverse his position on birth control and abortion then some billion Catholics would slow down their reproduction rate and set an example for global population control. And population control is the single most critical issue when it comes to the environment. You can cut emissions in half but when the population doubles you’re right back where you started.
Population growth is exponential. As long as it is any positive value there will be a doubling rate. As long as there is a doubling rate then the population will double every cycle. And with the size of the Earth fixed there’s no place to go. At some point society collapses and you have a mass starvation event coupled with war and disease.
So when you think about it – who is in the best position right now who can make the biggest difference with the least effort – it’s the Pope. All he has to do is say the words and a huge chunk of the population slows down their reproduction.
Oprah is out plugging the Surface for Microsoft, stating that she is buying several of the devices as gifts.
However, in sending out that specific tweet, she, or whoever was running her account that day, used a somewhat embarrassing service to communicate.
