Heretic barber shop

Police have arrested 49 people this week in a northern Iranian city during a crackdown on “satanic” clothes.

Police confronted rascals and thugs who appeared in public wearing satanic fashions and unsuitable clothing,” Qaemshahr city police commander Mahmoud Rahmani told IRNA.

Rahmani also said that five barber shops were shut and 20 more warned for “promoting Western hairstyles…”

“Some individuals, not knowing what culture they are imitating, put on clothing that was designed by the enemies of this country,” Rahmani said.

“The enemies of this country are trying to divert our youth and breed them the way they want and deprive them of a healthy life,” he added.

Good thing we don’t face laws in the United States drawn up by religious nutballs. Oh.

Is this the look for men in the future?

It’s official: Men really are the weaker sex

The male gender is in danger, with incalculable consequences for both humans and wildlife, startling scientific research from around the world reveals.

The research – to be detailed tomorrow in the most comprehensive report yet published – shows that a host of common chemicals is feminising males of every class of vertebrate animals, from fish to mammals, including people.

Backed by some of the world’s leading scientists, who say that it “waves a red flag” for humanity and shows that evolution itself is being disrupted, the report comes out at a particularly sensitive time for ministers. On Wednesday, Britain will lead opposition to proposed new European controls on pesticides, many of which have been found to have “gender-bending” effects.

It also follows hard on the heels of new American research which shows that baby boys born to women exposed to widespread chemicals in pregnancy are born with smaller penises and feminised genitals.

“This research shows that the basic male tool kit is under threat,” says Gwynne Lyons, a former government adviser on the health effects of chemicals, who wrote the report.

Wonder if this will affect the gay marriage debate.

All pork products made and sold in the Irish Republic since September have been recalled over fears they are contaminated with a toxic substance. The action was taken after dioxins were found in slaughtered pigs thought to have eaten contaminated feed.

Tests showed some pork products contained up to 200 times more dioxins than the recognised safety limit.

Consumers and retailers in the Irish Republic have been warned to destroy all Irish pork and bacon products bought since 1 September as a precaution.

The substance believed to have contaminated the pig feed was PCB – polychlorinated bi-phenyls – a group of man-made chemicals formerly used in industry, but banned in the Irish Republic since 1979.

The Irish minister for agriculture, Brendan Smith, said the problem was confined to 47 farms…This is the total number of farms identified as having received possible contaminated animal feed. There is only one feed supplier involved.”

They called on retailers, the hospitality sector and the pig processing sector to withdraw all pork products from their stock. The government’s medical officer, Tony Holohan, also advised people not to consume or purchase any pork products and to dispose of any they came across.

Pretty impressive to see such a scorched earth policy on food safety.

This Episode’s Show Notes by KD Martin:

From Gitmo Nation East and West it’s time for another episode of No Agenda. First up, the Canadian revolution. Where is our satellite feed for CBC? Will PM Harper be ousted? Let’s hear from the Queen, maybe she knows what happened to satirical TV.

Adam brings up a tale of murder in Gilford (his home), replete with choppers and automatic weapons. And all this time you thought Bobbies had no BFGs. What’s the public doing? Sitting at home watching “I’m a celebrity, get me out of here.” How does this lead to revolution? John wants to know, and Adam brings up interesting parallels with America’s situation and the French Revolution.

John swerves into similarities about the collapse of the East India TC and today’s oil market. Will gasoline hit $1.00 / gallon? John has some interesting comments, including info on double shorts. Where is the SEC when Goldman Sachs is touting $200 oil and shorting it at the same time?

Adam brings up the 8 trillion dollar bailout and John has his say about the supposed ‘boom’ when Obama takes office. What do they think will happen? You’ll have to listen to this one — good times or bad?

Ohio authorities stormed a farm house in LaGange Monday, December 1, to execute a search warrant, holding the Jacqueline and John Stowers and their son and young grandchildren at gunpoint for nine hours. During the raid the Ohio Department of Agriculture and police confiscated over ten thousand dollars worth of food, computers and cell phones. The Stowers’ crime? They run a private, members-only food co-op. While state authorities were looking for evidence of illegal activities, the family was not informed what crime they were suspected of, they were not read their rights or allowed to make a phone call. The children, some as young as toddlers, were traumatized by armed officers interrogating the adults with guns drawn.

The Morning Journal, a newspaper serving northern Ohio, reported that the Stowers were believed to be operating without a license. However, the Stowers claim that the food co-op they run does not engage in any activities that would require state licensing. Friends of the Stowers openly question why such aggressive tactics were necessary to investigate a licensing complaint. The Ohio Department of Agriculture has apparently been chastised by the courts in previous cases for over-reach, including entrapment of an Amish man to sell raw milk, which backfired, when it became known that the man gave milk instead of selling it to a state undercover agent, refusing to take money for what he believed to be a charitable act. The Amish literally interpret the Gospel of Matthew (5:42) to “give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.”

This is all about the government not getting their “cut”, kinda like the mob thugs who shake down the liquor store owner on the corner. What is happening to our country?

KopBusters rented a house in Odessa, Texas and began growing two small Christmas trees under a grow light similar to those used for growing marijuana. When faced with a suspected marijuana grow, the police usually use illegal FLIR cameras and/or lie on the search warrant affidavit claiming they have probable cause to raid the house. Instead of conducting a proper investigation which usually leads to no probable cause, the Kops lie on the affidavit claiming a confidential informant saw the plants and/or the police could smell marijuana coming from the suspected house.

The trap was set and less than 24 hours later, the Odessa narcotics unit raided the house only to find KopBuster’s attorney waiting under a system of complex gadgetry and spy cameras that streamed online to the KopBuster’s secret mobile office nearby.

Lorraine Henderson

The regional director of Homeland Security, Customs, and Border Protection was charged today with repeatedly hiring illegal immigrants to clean her Salem home after one cleaner wore a wire during an undercover investigation.

Lorraine Henderson is the director of the Port of Boston, overseeing 190 armed federal officers who patrol major airports and shipping terminals in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. “She’s supposed to be deporting aliens, not hiring them,” said Assistant US Attorney Brian T. Kelly, chief of the public corruption unit. Agents arrested Henderson at her Salem home at 8 a.m. Standing this afternoon in US District Court in Boston, she wore jeans and a gray sweatshirt and did not enter a plea to a charge of encouraging an illegal immigrant to remain in the country. If convicted, she faces as much as 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

According to an eight-page affidavit unsealed today, Henderson had employed a Brazilian woman to clean her home for $75 to $80 every few weeks for several years. “You have to be careful ’cause they will deport you. Be careful,” Henderson told the housekeeper in a conversation Sept. 9, 2008, that was recorded on the wire. “Wow, wow, if you leave they won’t let you back … you can’t leave, don’t leave … ’cause once you leave you will never be back.” After the conversation that day in her Salem home, Henderson increased the woman’s pay from $75 to $80, according to the affidavit. The housekeeper, whose name was not included in the affidavit, agreed to wear a wire after being approached by a special agent with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

So she is stupid and cheap. And the beat goes on.

They may be talking funny money, but it’s not funny business.

Residents from the Milwaukee neighborhoods of Riverwest and East Side are scheduled to meet Wednesday to discuss printing their own money. The idea is that the local cash could be used at neighborhood stores and businesses, thus encouraging local spending. The result, supporters hope, would be a bustling local economy, even as the rest of the nation deals with a recession.

“You have all these people who have local currency, and they’re going to spend it at local stores,” said Sura Faraj, a community organizer who is helping spearhead the plan. “They can’t spend it at the Wal-Mart or the Home Depot, but they can spend it at their local hardware store or their local grocery store.”

Incentives could be used to entice consumers into using the new money. For example, perhaps they could trade $100 U.S. for $110 local, essentially netting them a 10 percent discount at participating stores.
[…]
As long as communities don’t create coins, or print bills that resemble federal dollars, organizations are free to produce their own greenbacks—and they’d don’t even have to be green.

I wonder if they could fund the bailouts with this since that plan is working so well.

Haverstraw Middle School

Associated Press – December 6, 2008:

A white social studies teacher attempted to enliven a seventh-grade discussion of slavery by binding the hands and feet of two black girls, prompting outrage from one girl’s mother and the local chapter of the NAACP.

After the mother complained to Haverstraw Middle School, the superintendent said he was having “conversations with our staff on how to deliver effective lessons.”

“If a student was upset, then it was a bad idea,” said Superintendent Brian Monahan of the North Rockland School District in New York City’s northern suburbs.

The teacher apologized to the mother who complained and her 13-year-old daughter during a meeting Thursday that also included a representative of the local NAACP. But the mother, Christine Shand of Haverstraw, said Friday she thinks the teacher should be removed from the class.

“I think the teacher should have gotten some discipline,” Shand said. “I know if that was me, I would be uncomfortable going back to that class. Why should my daughter have to switch?”

Monahan refused to say what, if any, measures were taken against the teacher, Eileen Bernstein, who was still working on Friday. The school district said she was not available for comment.

Can you imagine it? Two sightings in one day! You’ll have to hurry with the guitar, though. It’s on eBay and when Jesus is gone, he ain’t coming back this time. Mary isn’t on eBay. Yet.

Oh, and on a vaguely related topic, read about the un-Christmas Christmas sign.

In the latest round of what’s become almost a winter tradition — conflicts over religious symbols in public places — a group of atheists and agnostics have put up a sign in the state Capitol that says, in part: “Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.”

Freedom From Religion Foundation members put up the sign Monday, partly in response to a nearby Nativity scene. They also debuted a billboard in downtown Olympia that reads: “Reason’s Greetings.”

I’m playing around with Fedora 10 and my first impression is — what a piece of crap. The bottom line is — it doesn’t work. As a Linux user for 12 years and a KDE user for about 8 years, I have to say that upgrading to KDE 3.5 is a giant step backwards. One of the problems in the free software world is that often no one even tries this stuff to see if it works. I can’t imagine that if you gave this to any user of the earlier version that they would be happy with the upgrade. Even free software should have SOME standards. I have to say that as a KDE fan – I’m just plan SHOCKED at how piss poor this product is.

Parents are being warned about fake imported Nintendo games consoles which could be a fire hazard and pose a danger to their children’s safety.

HM Revenue & Customs said it had seized hundreds of counterfeit Nintendo DS and DS Lites, which were discovered to contain dangerous power adapters.

Nintendo confirmed it had not produced the potentially dangerous adaptors.

Many had been bought for £40 instead of the usual £100 retail price.

“You might find you plug it in and the adaptor sets on fire or the wires start to melt and stick out,” she warned.

Everyone loves a bargain – no matter how stupid.
