One of Belgium’s best-known actors, Benoit Poelvoorde, has urged his fellow citizens not to shave again until the country finally forms a government.
[…]
A caretaker government has been running Belgium since June, setting a post-war record for a period without government. Parties from the Dutch-speaking north and French-speaking south remain split.

“Don’t be surprised by the stubble,” said Poelvoorde. “We have decided to stop shaving for as long as Belgium has no government. Let’s keep our beards until Belgium rises again.”
[…]
It was not immediately clear how many Belgian men might down razors in response.

Yeah, this should solve the problem. What would you do along these lines to get our government to do ____?

This happened a couple of years ago but I had never heard about it. The complete story is here: knoxnews.com

Computer security expert (and US citizen) Jacob Appelbaum, who is well known for his work on Tor, had been having some issues lately concerning his involvement as a volunteer with Wikileaks. He was among those who had their info requested by the Feds via Twitter. And he’s been having issues traveling to and from the US lately. Last July, he was detained upon flying into the country and it looks like something similar has happened again, where he was detained, searched and questioned after flying into Seattle from a vacation in Icleand.

He was careful to travel with no computers or gadgets whatsoever, other than some USB keys with encrypted versions of the Bill of Rights. He noted that the initial customs agent, to whom he handed over the declaration form was friendly until she pulled up his account, and from there things went sour. He asked to speak to a lawyer, which was denied on the grounds that he wasn’t being arrested.

Given that German scientists have already developed packaging film that kills food-inhabiting bacteria, it only makes sense that Scottish scientists should be developing the next step in the process – food packaging that changes color when the food is going bad. The “intelligent plastic” film, which is being created at Glasgow’s University of Strathclyde, is intended to take the guesswork out of whether or not the food packaged within it is still safe to eat.

The new plastic is intended to be used in conjunction with modified atmosphere packaging, an existing process in which the shelf life of food is lengthened by replacing the air inside its packaging with a protective gas mixture – often, most or all of the oxygen is drawn out and replaced with nitrogen or carbon dioxide.

In an act of extraordinary kindness, a Southwest Airlines pilot delayed his plane by 12 minutes to ensure a passenger would be able to say goodbye to his murdered grandson.

The man’s three-year-old grandchild had been killed by his daughter’s live-in boyfriend in Denver and was due to be taken off life support ahead of donating his organs…

Having been in Los Angeles on business, the man’s wife had arranged for him to transfer at Tucson airport in Arizona onto a flight bound for Denver to be with his bereaved daughter…

Yet, despite arriving at Los Angeles International Airport two hours before his flight was due to depart, lengthy check-in lines meant he faced a race against time to board on schedule.

Even after sprinting from the security checkpoint in his socks, the grandfather still arrived at the departure gate 12 minutes late…

According to a letter written to travel blog Elliott.org by the man’s wife, he was greeted by the pilot and ticketing agent with the words: ‘Are you Mark? We held the plane for you and we’re so sorry about the loss of your grandson…’

The letter continues: ‘As my husband walked down the Jetway with the pilot, he said, “I can’t thank you enough for this.”

‘The pilot responded with, “They can’t go anywhere without me and I wasn’t going anywhere without you. Now relax. We’ll get you there. And again, I’m so sorry.”’

Thanks to the kindness of the pilot, the man was able to reach his daughter in Denver and bid farewell to his grandson…

A Southwest spokesperson said the airline was ‘proud’ of the pilot’s behaviour.

My kind of pilot. My kind of airline. Rare enough that a corporation remembers that human beings are the source of their income.

Thanks, Mr. Fusion.

Muckety-mucks. Saylor is second from left.

How much of this goes on, anyway?

Orlando, Florida (CNN) — A central Florida police chief has been arrested and charged with derailing an investigation into the alleged rape of a minor in order to protect a friend.

Windermere, Florida, Police Chief Daniel Saylor, 44, was arrested Wednesday morning on felony charges of official misconduct and unlawful compensation for official behavior, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

As I write this, Pres. Obama has just finished giving his surprisingly long speech at the memorial ceremony in Tuscon for those shot last weekend after a day when members of Congress paid tribute to Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in the House. Admittedly, a white member of Congress and other white people, including a little white girl, getting shot will get top of the news for a while. And while what happened is obviously a tragedy, isn’t there at least a little bit of hypocrisy in it all?

– How many other innocent people injured or murdered by attackers in the past year who weren’t famous got such attention?
– How many others were killed by someone who, for lack of funds for mental health treatment, were on the streets untreated?
– How many service people killed heroically serving over seas got such attention?
– How many ordinary people will get the health care now and afterwards that Giffords will get?

I could go on, but you see what I’m getting at. I don’t begrudge the attention and so on to the victims and to what happened, but don’t others unknown to the President and Congress deserve at least a little attention, too?

At a press conference in New York City today, Verizon said it will soon begin selling Apple’s iPhone.

The device will be available on its network starting in early February, COO Lowell McAdam said to a gathering of press at Lincoln Center. It’s the same model iPhone 4 that AT&T and international carriers currently sell except that it connects to the CDMA network instead of GSM.

Starting on February 10, a 16GB model will cost $199.99 with a two-year contract, according to Verizon Wireless’ Web site. The 32GB model will sell for $299.99. An extra feature Verizon will offer is the phone’s ability to be a personal Wi-Fi “hot spot.” Up to five Wi-Fi devices can connect to the Verizon iPhone at one time.

Contraband?

A cross-border kerfuffle over a popular chocolate treat nearly cost a Winnipeg woman a $300 fine and saddled her with a bureaucratic headache.

Lind Bird was recently stopped at the U.S. border and selected for a random search of her vehicle. She was warned she could have faced a fine after the customs official found — and seized — her $2 Kinder Surprise egg as illegal contraband.

Bird learned U.S. authorities have banned the candy because they come with a plastic toy inside that could, if eaten, choke a small child.
