Are we/have we devolved into a de facto fascist country where the line between government and big business is hard/impossible to distinguish? Or is it worse than that? Add in law enforcement (local to federal) with diminishing limits on power who are often called upon by corporations to enforce their business needs (eg, MPAA & RIAA) and you have a dangerous mix. At least for us not running the corporations.

Every generation or so, a major secular shift takes place that shakes up the existing paradigm. It happens in industry, finance, literature, sports, manufacturing, technology, entertainment, travel, communication, etc. I would like to discuss the paradigm shift that is occurring in politics.

For a long time, American politics has been defined by a Left/Right dynamic. It was Liberals versus Conservatives on a variety of issues. Pro-Life versus Pro-Choice, Tax Cuts vs. More Spending, Pro-War vs Peaceniks, Environmental Protections vs. Economic Growth, Pro-Union vs. Union-Free, Gay Marriage vs. Family Values, School Choice vs. Public Schools, Regulation vs. Free Markets.

The new dynamic, however, has moved past the old Left Right paradigm. We now live in an era defined by increasing Corporate influence and authority over the individual. These two “interest groups” – I can barely suppress snorting derisively over that phrase – have been on a headlong collision course for decades, which came to a head with the financial collapse and bailouts. Where there is massive concentrations of wealth and influence, there will be abuse of power. The Individual has been supplanted in the political process nearly entirely by corporate money, legislative influence, campaign contributions, even free speech rights.

This may not be a brilliant insight, but it is surely an overlooked one. It is now an Individual vs. Corporate debate – and the Humans are losing.

This ties in with the Supreme Court controversy over should corporations be considered persons and have a right to privacy, etc.

Guwahati, Sep 26 (IANS) ‘Bombile’ is the latest phrase terrorizing Assam with reports of mobile phones suddenly exploding, causing the user to become unconscious. The mysterious phenomenon has prompted Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to order a scientific probe to unravel the bizarre occurrences.

An estimated 30 cases have been reported so far with more than 20 people admitted to various hospitals in Assam during the past one week. Most of the victims complained of nausea and a splitting headache, and some of them had to be literally wheeled into the hospital unconscious after the mobile handsets exploded soon after receiving a call.

‘This is a mysterious phenomenon and so I have asked for a thorough probe by experts to find out the cause as to why mobile handsets are bursting in such a large number,’ Gogoi told IANS. At least 10 such cases were brought to the notice of the police – although no cases were registered as the officials were perplexed, not knowing what to do.

According to witnesses and victims, the explosions took place soon after receiving calls from numbers that appeared in red on the handset screens.

‘I got a phone call from an unknown number and I noticed on my handset that the numbers were highlighted in red colour. Soon after I received the call, there was a loud sound and I was left unconscious,’ said Mujib Ali, the driver of a doctor in Guwahati.

Ali’s handset was blown to bits Saturday.

Archie Comics will announce on Tuesday variant covers on the Obama-Palin theme, with one cover showing Obama poised to clash with Palin in midair, while another — labeled “The Fight for America!” — depicting Obama and Palin sporting boxing gloves, prepped to spar with one other. Obama is dubbed “The Chicago Kid” while Palin gets named “The Thrilla from Wasilla.” “We sat around and talked and said, ‘Holy toledo!’ This is something that we should take a look at and bring the president back on the cover for.” (He said he just reached out to both the Palin and Obama camps and predicted that “I’m sure that we’re going to hear from them” about their comics).

“At the end of the day, President Obama and Sarah Palin completely come from opposite sides, but they both want the same thing: The best interests of the United States. And we figured Riverdale High School was a place they can unite,” he said.

Of course, there’s a subtle statement being made here by Archie Comics: Sarah Palin is the apparent GOP leader. Why else choose her to counter Obama?

“From my view point, she does represent the Republican Party right now,” said Goldwater. “She’s out front and center and there is no other dynamic candidate that we can see here at Archie that basically represents the Republican Party. … No one else occurred to us, actually.”

Both characters worthy of a comic book, but little else.

I just got an email from the Electronic Frontier foundation (eff.org) regarding 2 proposals in front of congress. One would give the government the power to shut down web sites accused of aiding in piracy. That could mean anything including, in my opinion, if your web site was hacked or spammed pointing to pirate sites.

The second proposal is that all email providers would be required to provide a back door to allow the government to tap email traffic. As an email provider I find this particularly disturbing.

My opinion is that both are extremely dangerous proposals. The first allows shutdown for merely being accused of something even if it isn’t so. I personally host many web sites that have been accused of things that aren’t so.

The second is not only shocking on its face, but if there is a government back door I guarantee it will leak and every hacker is going to get hold of it.

Personally I would not comply with either law should it pass and would go to jail before I gave the US government a back door into my systems.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, for those who don’t know, is the leading online civil liberties organization on the planet. If not for them the online world would be a far different place than what it is now.

Here is the link to the story.

France’s ex-justice minister Rachida Dati mixed up the words “fellatio” and “inflation” – which sound similar in French – during a TV interview.

She told Canal Plus: “I see some [foreign investment funds] looking for returns of 20 or 25% at a time when fellatio is close to zero.”

Within hours, the video was an internet hit on websites such as YouTube.

Ms Dati, now a Euro MP, later laughed off the whole episode saying she had spoken too quickly…

The French word for fellatio is “fellation”, which sounds similar to the word “inflation”.

Ms Dati left the government last year amid criticism of her management style, and gossip about her clothes and love life.

She is now an MEP and serves as mayor of Paris’s seventh arrondissement.

At least she sees the humor of mispronouncing a word – and doesn’t try to pass it off as a neologism.

The North Korean leader’s youngest son Kim Jong-un has been appointed as a general, state media announced tonight, in the clearest signal yet that he is Kim Jong-il’s chosen heir.

But analysts said it was still uncertain whether the younger Kim would lead the country following his father’s death, and if so how independent he would be. They portrayed his current situation as effectively a probation period.

In its first ever mention of Kim Jong-un, state news agency KCNA said the 26- or 27-year-old had been given the rank of general.

“He will be the crown prince. That’s it. There is no doubt,” said Dr Kongdan Oh of the Brookings Institute. But she added: “The father provides a halo effect – the question is what happens when Kim Jong-il dies. That will be an interesting time.”

Professor Hazel Smith, a North Korea expert at Cranfield University, said: “This does not mark a transition [of power] as such, but probably marks a step towards the son becoming more public. We have not seen the end of the process here: there is an element of probation.” She added: “I don’t think he will be fully trusted [by everyone in the elites] – he has spent too much time outside the country.”

KCNA also reported that Kim’s sister Kyong-hui, who has accompanied him frequently on public outings in recent times, was also named as a general.

Let’s hope this apple has fallen far away from the tree. But, I won’t hold my breath.

Aliens have landed, infiltrated British nuclear missile sites and deactivated the weapons, according to US military pilots.

The beings have repeated their efforts in the US and have been active since 1948, the men said, and accused the respective governments of trying to keep the information secret.

The unlikely claims were compiled by six former US airmen and another member of the military who interviewed or researched the evidence of 120 ex-military personnel…

One of the men, Capt Robert Salas, said: “The US Air Force is lying about the national security implications of unidentified aerial objects at nuclear bases and we can prove it.”

He said said he witnessed such an event first-hand on March 16, 1967, at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana which housed Minuteman nuclear missiles…

Col Charles Halt said he saw a UFO at the former military base RAF Bentwaters, near Ipswich, 30 years ago, during which he saw beams of light fired into the base then heard on the military radio that aliens had landed inside the nuclear storage area.

He said: “I believe that the security services of both the United States and the United Kingdom have attempted – both then and now – to subvert the significance of what occurred at RAF Bentwaters by the use of well-practised methods of disinformation.”

Well! I think we should get right on this.

Who will be the first to ring his congress-critter and ask for an investigation?

It was just a matter of time before this contraption killed someone. It almost killed President Bush some years back.

The multi-millionaire businessman, 62, fell into the River Wharfe while inspecting the grounds of his North Yorkshire estate on a rugged country version of the Segway.

The Segway is a motorised scooter which use gyroscopes to remain upright and is controlled by the direction in which the rider leans. A passer-by found Heselden alongside his Segway in the Boston Spa area at about 11.40am on Sunday.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said today: “Police were called at 11.40am yesterday to reports of a man in the River Wharfe, apparently having fallen from the cliffs above. “A Segway-style vehicle was recovered. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A surprisingly interesting film.

Grain Elevator — Charles Konowal — 1981 — 15 min 53 s

This documentary short is a visual portrait of “Prairie Sentinels,” the vertical grain elevators that once dotted the Canadian Prairies. Surveying an old diesel elevator’s day-to-day operations, this film is a simple, honest vignette on the distinctive wooden structures that would eventually become a symbol of the Prairie provinces.

THEN:

San Francisco, CA – October 26, 2006 – Six Apart, the world leader in blogging software and services, today launched Vox in the U.S., Japan, and France. Vox, a free personal blogging service for sharing experiences with friends and family, had been in private beta since June. Six Apart also announced an agreement with MRM Worldwide, a full-service direct and interactive marketing agency, to develop and implement creative advertising and integrated sponsorship programs on Vox.

“Vox is the big next step in the evolution of personal blogging,” said Six Apart co-founder and president Mena Trott, who is the lead designer of Vox. “It has powerful privacy control and is easier to use, more accessible, and fun.”

NOW:

Vox is closing on September 30, 2010. Vox has been a fun place to explore, create and connect with your friends. But Vox is closing its doors on September 30, 2010.

As of September 2, Vox is no longer accepting new user registrations. If you have an existing Vox account you can continue to sign in to manage your account and view posts from your neighborhood.

On Wednesday September 15th, you will no longer be able to create new posts on Vox or upload new photos or videos. You will still be able to sign in to view your blog and manage your account.

On Thursday September 30th, your blog will no longer be available at Vox.com, and you will no longer be able to sign in to Vox.

Another reason you cannot trust your data to third parties in the cloud. Yeah, sure you can move it to Typepad somehow. But you still lose your old VOX url and most of your readers. Pretty lame.

There was something of a buzz about VOX when it appeared. I could never figure out why.

No need to wait. Make your own.

Atheists in Oklahoma City have erected a billboard seeking fellow non-believers, and Satanists have scheduled a conference in a city-owned building, drawing criticism from ministers in a state where more than eight out of 10 people say they are Christians…

Nick Singer, the coordinator of a local atheists’ group called “Coalition of Reason,” recently received $5,250 from its national counterpart to erect the billboard along Interstate 44 near the Oklahoma State Fair, which opens Wednesday. Its message reads, “Don’t believe in God? Join the club…”

Legislators pray in their chambers, led by a “minister of the day,” usually Christian. The Oklahoma City Thunder is one of the few NBA teams to begin each contest after a non-denominational prayer delivered by a minister on the public address system…

The Satanists, calling themselves the Church of the IV Majesties, have reserved a room at the Oklahoma City Civic Center for a “blasphemy ritual,” said James Hale, a founding member.

“I guess you could say we’re poking a dog with a stick. That’s the point of Satanism — to question all things,” Hale said.

Singer, from the atheists’ group, said his group has no connection to the Satanists.

“As far as Satan goes, we don’t believe in him either,” he said.

If you wonder whose hatred and fear might surpass any respect for constitutional freedoms, the answer is:

“It’s not the people who don’t believe in God that worry me,” said Robin Meyers, senior minister at Mayflower Congregational Church…”It’s some of the people who do.

Fundamentalism is the enemy worldwide, no matter what the strain.”
