A civil trial that opened Wednesday in Portland will show that the Boy Scouts of America knew it had child molesters in its leadership for decades but kept the problem quiet, according to an attorney for one of the victims.

The case, expected to attract national attention, centers on a Portland man who confessed to Scout leaders that he had molested 17 Scouts but was allowed to continue joining boys in Scouting activities.

On a broader scale, the case is one of the first to bring into open court hundreds of confidential files that the 100-year-old organization kept on Scout leaders and others suspected of sexually abusing boys. Though the Scouts, based in Texas, have been sued dozens of times over allegations of sexual abuse, most cases have been settled out of court, keeping files from becoming public.

Patrick Boyle, the Washington, D.C.-based author of “Scout’s Honor: Sexual Abuse in America’s Most Trusted Institution,” said Wednesday that this case may be only the second time such files have been used in a trial…

The Scouts, Kelly Clark said in opening statements, knew it had pedophiles in its organization yet allowed Timur Dykes and others to continue to associate with its members. He held up file folder after file folder from Boy Scout headquarters that he said proves the organization knew of at least 1,000 suspected child molesters from 1965 to 1985.

Those decisions led naturally, predictably and foreseeably to the abuse of boys like” my client, he said.

RTFA. Ain’t nothing like a corrupt management trying to explain away the results of their policies..

NEW YORK (CBS) ― The NYPD is looking for the public’s help in finding a man wanted for the attempted robbery of a city livery cab.

Police say the suspect pulled a black semi-automatic handgun and demanded the driver’s money, but when a struggle ensued, the suspect proceeded to bite the cabbie repeatedly on the neck, arm and back. The suspect entered the cab at East 130 Street and Lexington Avenue around 3 a.m. on March 13. He then asked to be taken to a location near Bronx Community College.

Police said when they arrived to the destination, the suspect pulled the gun and demanded the cabbie’s money. The suspect is described as a 6-foot Hispanic male in his 30s, wearing a black leather jacket.

This economy is tough…even on immortals.

With all the drug trafficking that goes on in the Caribbean, this is probably a long shot. BTW, snorkeling is not scuba diving. Just wanted to clear that up for the Fox News dude.

When children hit puberty, their ability to learn a second language drops, they find it harder to learn their way around a new location and they are worse at detecting errors in cognitive tests.

Why is this? Sheryl Smith and her colleagues at the State University of New York now reckon that all of these behavioural changes could be due to a temporary increase in a chemical receptor that inhibits brain activity in an area responsible for learning.

In 2007, Smith’s team discovered that the number of these receptors soared in mice when they hit puberty, before falling back in adulthood. In their latest study, Smith’s team set about finding out if these receptor changes in mice might lead to impaired learning abilities, rather like those seen in pubescent humans.

The group examined the hippocampus – a region known to be involved in learning – in mouse brains. Sure enough, pubertal mice had seven times as many of the receptors as infant mice. In adulthood, the number of these receptors fell back to an intermediate level. The team was also able to examine individual neurons and could see that the extra receptors were being expressed specifically at “neural projections” – sites within the hippocampus known to be involved in learning. This was further evidence that the increase in receptors might affect learning. Finally, the group measured spatial learning abilities in the mice. The creatures were placed on a rotating platform, on which a stationary section delivered a mild electric shock. After a single shock, the infant mice learnt to dodge the danger zone. The pubertal mice, however, failed to learn to avoid it even after several rounds.

Smith reckons that the same mechanism might underlie the learning deficits teenagers experience in teenagers.

Read the article to find out how this might be reversed.

What is there to say?

A Transportation Security Agency worker who pats down members of the flying public was charged with multiple child sex crimes targeting an underage girl yesterday. The bust outraged privacy and passenger advocates who say it justifies their fears about Logan International Airport’s full-body scanner.

“It’s a huge, huge issue,” said Kate Hinni of FlyersrRights.org. “The TSA needs a complete overhaul . . . If you have a pedophile looking at those naked pictures, they’ve got all your information, it’s a gross violation of their authority. . . . They should make sure none of them is corrupted in any deviant sexual manner.” Sean Shanahan, 44, of Winthrop was held on $50,000 bail after he was charged with two counts of statutory rape, two counts of enticing a minor and one count of indecent assault and battery. He was arrested yesterday at Massachusetts General Hospital.

TSA spokeswoman Ann Davis said Shanahan had passed two background checks, neither of which picked up any record that would prevent him from getting a job. The 14-year-old victim watched a movie at his house, Okeeffe said. She said during the film, he massaged the victim’s thigh and touched her under a blanket, then during the February school vacation the girl stayed at his house with his daughter. Okeeffe said Shanahan nicknamed the victim “Kitten,” and that she was seen going into his bedroom.

Shanahan fled the state last week, prosecutors said, sending his ex wife a text asking her to get rid of his computer, adding “I (expletive) up bad.”

Well, it’s not like he met her at work, right?

Upgrades to Android 2.1 for the Motorola Droid starts now. Verizon is rolling it out slowly at first and is supposed to really start distributing it seriously over the next few days. Have you gotten your upgrade yet? If so – tell us about it.

UPDATE: Looks like the upgrade has been canceled due to bugs.

TURNERSVILLE, NJ (WPIX) – People shopping in a South Jersey Wal-Mart over the weekend were shocked to hear an announcement that apparently ordered “all black people” to leave the Turnersville store.

The racist message — delivered over the store’s public-address system shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday — was made by a male who calmly announced, “Attention Wal-Mart customers. All black people leave the store now.”

Witnesses say both customers and store employees were stunned by the highly offensive announcement. As a result, Washington Township police, along with the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, are investigating the incident as a possible bias crime. In addition, Wal-Mart officials said they are reviewing security tapes in order to track down the person responsible for the remarks. Customers shopping in the store at the time say managers immediately issued an apology following the announcement.

In a statement to PIX News, Wal-Mart corporate spokeswoman Ashley Hardie, said the incident was “unacceptable.” “We’re as appalled by this as anyone. Whoever did this is wrong and acted in an inappropriate manner,” she said. “We are currently reviewing our systems to prevent this from happening in the future.”

In other Wal-Mart news- Wal-Mart fires long term employee with inoperable brain tumor for medical marijuana use.

To add insult to injury, Walmart is now challenging Casias’ eligibility for unemployment. Simply outrageous. This is the thanks he gets for showing up to work and doing his job for the last five years, despite being stricken with a life-threatening illness. “I gave them everything,” Casias told a local news outlet.

I’m sure this is about insurance premiums, duh.
