LONDON (AFP) – A cat which lost both back paws after a traumatic accident involving a combine harvester has regained a spring in its step after being fitted with prosthetic limbs.

In a groundbreaking surgery carried out by Noel Fitzpatrick, a Surrey-based veterinary surgeon, the custom-made implants “peg” the ankle to Oscar’s foot and mimic the way in which deer antler bone grows through skin.

The prosthetic legs, called intraosseous transcutaneous amputation prosthetics (Itaps) were developed by a team from University College London, led by Professor Gordon Blunn. “The real revolution with Oscar is [that] we have put a piece of metal and a flange into which skin grows into an extremely tight bone,” Fitzpatrick said of the operation which took place last November.

Oscar’s recovery will feature as part of a six-part BBC One documentary series, The Bionic Vet, starting later this month.

The implications of this study, which is breaking news today, are mind-boggling.

Job seekers take note: Resumes printed on heavy paper stock are likely considered more seriously than those on lightweight sheets.

That’s the finding of a new study that reveals our sense of touch unconsciously influences our thoughts and moods.

“When people physically experience weight—when they feel heavy things—it makes them see the world in a more serious and important way,” said study leader Joshua Ackerman. (See: “Warm Your Hands, Warm Your Outlook?”)

Ackerman and colleagues created six experiments where they gave people similar objects of different textures and weights, such as heavy or light clipboards and rough or smooth jigsaw puzzle pieces. Handling the objects affected the subjects’ impressions and decisions, the study found.

Cripes, this sure took forever! Now blocking random porn should be easier I’d hope.

Pornography will have its own top-level domain, dot-XXX, the board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers decided Friday.

The proposal was made under ICANN’s rules for “sponsored” TLDs, through which domains have been created by interest groups including the aeronautical industry (dot-aero) and the cooperative movement (dot-coop).

ICM Registry, the company that proposed the dot-XXX domain, welcomed the vote.

Myself and others have argued for this TLD for years. The opponents of the idea say it will make it easier to find porn. Apparently they have never used a search engine! Porn is too easy to find now. How can it get any easier?

Remember this guy?

BALTIMORE — Like any new employee, Jack Abramoff is trying to keep a low profile — or as low a profile as a cause célèbre disgraced lobbyist and convicted felon can keep when news cameramen keep staking out his new workplace.

Mr. Abramoff started his new gig this week at Tov Pizza — “the best kosher pizza in town,” according to a catchy jingle that plays while callers are on hold.

He has so far stayed largely cloistered in a back office. He will work about 40 hours a week, said the owner, Ron Rosenbluth. He comes in around 10:30 a.m., leaves around 5:30 p.m., and wears a yarmulke to work, as many of the male customers and employees here do. He earns between $7.50 and $10 an hour (“or a little less than what he used to make”). He has been responsible, punctual, courteous. “He is not the monster he has been portrayed as,” Mr. Rosenbluth said.

Mr. Abramoff did not appear at the front of the restaraunt during a two-hour stretch late Wednesday afternoon as families walked in and out, having ordered slices, veggie burgers and baked ziti. There was, however, a chance sighting in a back office (he wore a red polo shirt and appeared to be reading something).

But of course, Mr. Abramoff stands out among the 18 people who work here. He is that Jack Abramoff, the former lobbying macher who pleaded guilty in 2006 to felony counts involving fraud, corruption and conspiracy, and served three and a half years at a minimum security prison camp in Cumberland, Md. He is now living at a nearby halfway house, which arranged for Mr. Abramoff’s employment here.

Uh-huh. Bridge for sale…over here.

Biology compels most organisms to reproduce. But in Japan, something bizarre is happening — couples aren’t reproducing. The nation has one of the lowest birth rates in the world, and to make matters worse, it also has one of the highest life expectancies. It is expected that 40 percent of its population will be over the age of 65 by 2050.

Japan in recent years has also been shown to have the least sex on a weekly basis – only 34 percent of Japanese reported having sex on a weekly basis while a whopping 87 percent of Greeks were getting busy under the sheets.

Enter Yotaro, a charming “low-tech” robot. Yotaro cries, giggles, and kicks when you tickle him. He sneezes and his nose runs. When he is upset, he even shakes his rattle to calm down. But Yotaro is no human child — he’s a “synthetic”. Hiroki Kunimura, of the University of Tsukuba led the team who created the tyke. He states, “A robot can’t be human but it’s great if this robot triggers human emotions, so humans want to have their own baby.”
[…]
Then the research noticed the unusual reaction people had to the baby — they began to want to have children of their own. […] Project member Madoka Hirai said she never thought about having a child, but after Yotaro became baby preoccupied. She began to notice ads for baby clothes and think about what it might be like to have a baby of her own.

Oregon Live – June 23, 2010:

A Portland massage therapist gave local police a detailed statement last year alleging that former Vice President Al Gore groped her, kissed her and made unwanted sexual advances during a late-night massage session in October 2006 in a suite at the upscale Hotel Lucia.

“The case was not investigated any further because detectives concluded there was insufficient evidence to support the allegations,” the Portland Police Bureau said in a prepared statement Wednesday, responding to inquiries from all over the world after the National Enquirer broke the story on its website.

In her detailed Jan. 8, 2009, statement to a Portland sexual assault investigator, the woman said she was called to the hotel about 10:30 p.m. Oct. 24, 2006, to provide a massage for Gore, who was registered under the name “Mr. Stone.” Once inside his ninth-floor suite, she said he pushed her hand to his groin, fondled her buttocks and breasts, tongue-kissed her and threw her down on the bed as she tried to thwart his advances.

An Indiana coffin maker specializing in plus-sized orders said business is booming amid the recession because of the obesity epidemic.

Goliath Casket of Lynn, Ind., said the obesity epidemic has been keeping business strong, with the largest casket made by the company a 7-foot-by-7-foot coffin for a man in Alaska, Weight World reported Wednesday.

The company said it was set up in response to the few options available for plus-sized coffins 25 years ago and regularly produces coffins measuring 4 feet by 4 feet.

Special devices, too, for hauling these in and out of the hearse?

If this is the way it is on the ultra-successful iPhone, can you imagine what it is/will be on other platforms?

Full Analysis of iPhone Economics – it is bad news. And then it gets worse

[…]1.43 Billion dollars divided among 164,000 actual paid apps gives the average app the revenue of $8,700. After Apple takes its 30% or $2,600 we are left with $6,100. That was over a two year period, so an average paid iPhone app earned six grand to its developers, ie in one year, they earned $3,050. This is the average, remember, it is not the median. The average skews too high because of the long tail.
[…]
Supercollider Blog reports on several levels of paid app downloads, the relevant number is that half of all paid iPhone apps get less than 1,000 downloads. The median point is under 1,000. Lets call it 999. That number times $1.95 per paid app gives the ‘most typical app’ the total revenues in its lifetime – the full two years of App Store existence – of $1,948 dollars. This is before Apple takes its cut of 30%, so we are left with $1,363 over two years or $682 per year. This is so ‘successful’ that half of all of the developers of the 164,250 apps – will actually earn LESS THAN THIS. Before you start to cry, remember, there is that Angry Bird game that had 4 million paid downloads and the Bewelled 2 game with 3 million paid downloads. Thats your math there, they are totally skewing the averages, and you are stuck in the ‘long tail’ indeed. Half of all developers will earn less than $682 per year. Do you still think this is a good business idea?

And at this point he’s not done yet. Yup, it gets worse as he looks at the cost of developing apps. He then does go into how to make real money (billions) from mobile apps.

Dr. Sonnet Ehlers has invented Rape-axe, a female device with jagged hooks that latch onto a man’s penis during penetration.

The doctor is distributing 30,000 of these condoms in South Africa during this year’s World Cup.

“It hurts,” Ehlers told CNN. “He cannot pee and walk when it’s on. If he tries to remove it, it will clasp even tighter.”

South Africa has one of the highest rape rates in the world, according to Human Rights Watch. It is also believed that 16 percent of the population is living with HIV. Rape-axe is inserted like a tampon and when embedded to a man the device can only be removed by a doctor.
