“We are such stuff as dreams are made on…”

A research team, whose major investors include some of the biggest telecommunications companies in Japan, has announced that it has successfully deciphered the contents of human dreams with high precision by analyzing the human brain’s activity during sleep.

In order to achieve these results, the research group first placed the three men who participated in the experiment into a state of sleep. They were then woken up after several minutes and asked to recount the content of their dreams. During this time the researchers compared the brain activity patterns recorded during sleep with the men’s accounts. The experiment was conducted over 200 times.

Next, while awake, the participants were shown pictures from 20 different categories, including cars and animals, after which their brain activity was further analyzed. These results were then compared to the brain activity during sleep, where the researchers discovered that they could predict the contents from one part of a dream with an accuracy rate of over 70 percent.

The year, 20??. You walk into a store, past a brain scanner which sees you are interested in a new toaster. Personalized ads appear in your Google Eyeball. Then you go to the airport where a brain scanner checks your intentions…

Trying to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7 without having to start over. This is for my friend who got the CrtptoDefense Virus. The next computer I get is not going to be Windows. It will either be just Linux or Android. (No – not going Apple. Steve Jobs sucks and his ghost is still running the company.

The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

An error prevented a required compliance check from completing. Cancel the installation and try upgrading again.

What the hell kind of an error message is that? You would think Microsoft would come up with something with a little more information.

NEW – clarification

Not trying to upgrade a machine with a virus on it. She had a two year old image backup. I restored that and applied all the updates. But I’m trying to upgrade that – not the one that was infected.

White House Criticized for Gender Based Pay Discrimination

A group of Democratic female senators on Wednesday declared war on the so-called “gender pay gap,” urging their colleagues to pass the aptly named Paycheck Fairness Act when Congress returns from recess next month. However, a substantial gender pay gap exists in their own offices, a Washington Free Beacon analysis of Senate salary data reveals.

Of the five senators who participated in Wednesday’s press conference—Barbara Mikulski (D., Md.), Patty Murray (D., Wash.), Debbie Stabenow (D., Mich.), Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.) and Barbara Boxer (D., Calif.)—three pay their female staff members significantly less than male staffers.

Murray, who has repeatedly accused Republicans of waging a “war a women,” is one of the worst offenders. Female members of Murray’s staff made about $21,000 less per year than male staffers in 2011, a difference of 33.8 percent. A significant “gender gap” exists in Feinstein’s office, where women also made about $21,000 less than men in 2011, but the percentage difference—41 percent—was even higher than Murray’s.

$6 Billion Missing from State Dept. Under Hillary Clinton

The State Department misplaced and lost some $6 billion due to the improper filing of contracts during the past six years, mainly during the tenure of former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, according to a newly released Inspector General report.

The $6 billion in unaccounted funds poses a “significant financial risk and demonstrates a lack of internal control over the Department’s contract actions,” according to the report.

The alert, originally sent on March 20 and just released this week, warns that the missing contracting funds “could expose the department to substantial financial losses.”

The report centered on State Department contracts worth “more than $6 billion in which contract files were incomplete or could not be located at all,” according to the alert. The State Department’s inability to properly file its paperwork is causing most of the losses, according to the report.

The IG “found repeated examples of poor contract file administration” over the years, the report said.

Contracts related to the U.S. war in Iraq, for instance, could not be produced in 33 out of 115 instances, according to the report.

“A recent OIG audit of the closeout process for contracts supporting the U.S. Mission in Iraq revealed that contracting officials were unable to provide 33 of 115 contract files requested in accordance with the audit sampling plan,” the report states.

Oh yeah, she’ll make a fine Presnident.

Friend of mine hit with cryptoDefense Virus

Talk about something that totally sucks, a friend of mine was hit with the CryptoDefence virus. There are various web sites that claim that the writers of this virus made a mistake and left the decryption keys on the hard drive. I only found one web site that says where the key file is supposed to be. Supposed to be at Application Data > Application Data > Microsoft > Crypto > RSA. I accessed the drive and the files aren’t there.

UPDATE: If you are infected after March 31 then the keys are no longer left there.

So – I’m wondering – all these articles on the web that say “Dumb CryptoDefense hackers leave keys on victims’ PCs” – but if that’s true then there should be a way to recover. So I’m asking the web for help. I’d like to recover this drive. If there really are keys out there this should be possible.

I’m willing to make a disk image available to anyone who can save the files.

We can’t let the kind of terrorism stand. If this becomes common and if they are allowed to be successful then it’s going to be happening all the time.
