On Thursday, Business Insider reported that China is trying to buy “a huge chunk” of Facebook.
According to the business news website, Beijing approached a fund that buys stock from former Facebook employees to see if it could assemble a stake large enough “to matter.” Moreover, Citibank is rumored to be trying to acquire as much as $1.2 billion of stock for two sovereign wealth funds, one from the Middle East and the other Chinese. Business Insider reports a third source, from a “very influential” Silicon Valley investment bank, confirms that Citi is representing China.
Should Beijing be allowed to buy a part of Mark Zuckerberg’s site? Business Insider tells us there is “little need” for concern about Chinese censors looking at the photos and postings of the 700 million people who trust Facebook with their personal online activity.
First, China’s position won’t be large. A billion-dollar investment does not buy much influence in a site expected to be worth a hundred times that when it goes public. Second, Beijing will be acquiring nonvoting stock. Third, shareholders don’t get the right to look at what’s on the site. All of these arguments from Business Insider ring true.
Yet they are all beside the point—and there are other reasons to be concerned. The business site says that “sovereign wealth funds are pretty distinct from their governments.”
Perhaps Norway’s fund is, but not China’s. The Communist Party, despite three decades of economic reform, insists on its monopoly of political power. And to maintain that monopoly, it tightly controls its own instrumentalities. That’s especially true at this moment because the Party is in the midst of the most comprehensive crackdown on society since the 1989 Beijing Spring. Chinese leaders clearly view social media as a threat to their rule, especially after seeing its force-multiplying effect in the ongoing Arab Spring protests that have toppled governments. In short, China’s sovereign wealth fund, which is no more independent of the Communist Party than the Beijing municipal government, wants to buy a stake in the world’s most prominent social networking site because Chinese leaders want to control social media. And they hope to do that as part of their comprehensive campaign to dominate the conversation about China—not just inside the country but around the world as well.

Some of the PHONY TWEETS at Fox News Twitter account.
Fox News’ political Twitter account was hacked according to reports on FoxNews.com.
Tweets coming from the @FoxNewsPolitics account early Monday have been reporting the death of President Barack Obama. A series of six tweets say that Obama was assassinated in Iowa and the shooter is unknown.
Fox’s political Twitter account has more than 34,000 followers.
According to FoxNews.com, the hacking is being investigated. The website also posted an apology for “any distress the false tweets may have created.”
Certaily, there is no shortage of right-wingers hoping to host news of the assassination of the president. Was Fox News a surprising choice?

Since it’s Conspiracy Saturday, how about this one: TSA agents are supposed to steal stuff to help with the security theatrics to make you feel unsafe.
It defies public-trust expectations, but there are rogue officers at the Transportation Security Administration who think nothing of stealing your stuff.
[…]
The TSA also estimates that for every TSA employee who touches a bag, some six to 10 airline or airport employees and contractors also have — mostly out of view of the passenger.
[…]
There are steps you can take to keep your things out of thieves’ hands:
- As much as possible, keep a watchful eye on your belongings. “You are responsible for your property as it proceeds through the screening process,” according to the TSA.
- Do not pack jewelry, cash, laptops, electronics or any fragile items in your baggage. Leave anything that you can’t live without at home.
- Skip the trays that the airport provides for jewelry, watches and wallets, and belts — using them invites theft. Take off those items before you get to the security line and put them in the pocket of a carry-on.
If you have a lost or missing item from a security checkpoint, check the airport’s lost and found first. The TSA has a list of all the phone numbers at every airport.
If you think your property was stolen, or damaged, during the screening process you can file a claim online.

The plane that launched the cruise missile as it climbs away?
Lots of websites out there on how the Twin Towers couldn’t possibly have been brought down the officially described way, but not as much attention is paid to the Pentagon attack on 9/11. This website has more photos than written stuff, so quicker to get a rundown on this theory. Have to say that if the video which replays the impact over and over is unretouched or otherwise tampered with, it doesn’t look like a a plane going in. The last item on the page about the wall symbol is a bit much, however.
So, on this 4th of July weekend when we celebrate what this nation is supposed to be, time to get your conspiracy tin foil hat on and discuss what it’s become!
IT looks like any other city skyline with skyscrapers, a few mountains and trees – except it isn’t real. The giant mirage appeared across the skyline near in East China earlier this month after heavy rainfall and humid conditions along the Xin’an River. As mist settled over the river at dusk, tall buildings appeared to rise from nowhere, leading residents in nearby Huanshan City to speculate that the vision may be a “vortex” to a lost civilisation. “It’s really amazing, it looks like a scene in a movie, in a fairlyland,” one resident told UK news channel ITN.
The mysterious city had vanished just as quickly as it had come. Scientists have quashed the vortex theory and, as per usual, have a simple explanation for the incredible sight. They believe it may have been a mirage, caused when moisture in the air becomes warmer than the temperature of the water below. When rays of sunlight cross from the colder air into the warmer air they are refracted or bent – creating a reflection in the air that looks similar to a reflection in water. It’s a common sight for many travellers on Australian roads. But we Australians tend to see puddles of water that disappear when you get close, not entire cities floating on rivers.

Chris Hansen, known for his “To Catch a Predator” series of reports for “Dateline NBC,” has been caught on hidden camera himself in what is could turn out to be a compromising situation. Hansen, 52 and a married father of two, was secretly videotaped June 24 arriving at the Ritz-Carlton’s Angle restaurant allegedly with Kristyn Caddell, 30, according to the National Enquirer, which has the footage posted on its website. A “romantic dinner” ensued at the Manalapan, Fla., restaurant, according to an Enquirer source.
Cameras filmed them driving back to Caddell’s Palm Beach apartment, where they didn’t emerge until 8 the next morning, the story alleges. Caddell, who works for a local TV news station, then reportedly drove him to the airport, according to the tabloid.
I dunno, seems like interesting irony since Hansen was a huge holier-than-thou defender of the set-up and the hidden camera. Oooops.

My job involves shooting and editing video and computer graphics, so I know a little about where I speak. If this guy is trying to emulate the capabilities of 50’s shlock sci-fi, movies, he’s got it down cold. Bravo! If not, get him some real tools and training, then see what he can do because while this looks like crap, he’s got a lot of desire and heart. Or something.
